Respect 2/22 Review
February 26th, 2007 -- by sam
L.A. is blessed with talent. In L.A. everywhere you turn there is another artist spewing their creativity into the streets, and the minds, hearts, and souls of many both in the ciy and around the world. Many people, including myself tend to take it for granted at times, but there are people who travel all over the world to come to fulfill their own personal prophecies and divuldging their creative abilities to the masses. The people who pay attention are the people who count in their minds and it should be rightfully so. There are some who understand this quality of the city that we live in and take advantage of it, giving many the oppertunity accomplish what they strive for. Amongst all of the smog, S.U.V's, high rises, and traffic their is communities of people who congregate to show support to artists, socialize, and get away from the hustle and headache that is L.A. life.

There are many groups who decide to take it upon themselves to spend their money, put in their time, and their energy to allow people to come together and enjoy what the city has to offer. One group who manifests the destiny of artists both in around Los Angeles is the JUNGLIST PLATOON. The JUNGLIST PLATOON consists of about eleven people who since 1999 have been putting together a weekly club called RESPECT. RESPECT is a club like no other. RESPECT is dedicated to the drum & bass scene. The duties that have to be performed to keep something like RESPECT going on for almost eight years now is emmense. The simple fact that these people are dedicated enough to maintain RESPECT for this long is simply marvelous. The ability to steadily maintain, book artists for every week, keep a ever so thickening crowd of people inside the club, and to provide them with such good vibes and amazing music that keeps them coming back every week, for eight years is something few can say.

This past week was one great example of why this club is, what it is. Upon entering the club the moment you open the door you are hit with a rush of pulsating drums and heavy bass-lines that charge at you. The opening D.J's were DRONE and MACHETE both JUNGLIST PLATOON members who with a well rounded assortment of Drum & Bass pressure keep a steady crowd of heads tuned in and people dancing with a fascinating ease. The tracks that they play bring plenty of "ooh"s and "aahs"s and the occasionally "Boh Boh Boh" translating into smiles on both D.J's faces. As time progresses the crowd just gets deeper, and the tunes get phatter as more people join in on the one of a kind vibes. By the time they are done with their set the vibe is so deep and the crowd is so hyped waiting to see what tracks they have selected for them next that a tornado could rip through the place and still not phase them.

Upstairs at the patio was another story. The paito was filled with people, leaving many with barely anywhere to stand without bunping into someone and spilling some of your drink, or having many close calls to burning someone with a cigarette. Heading back downstairs you could feel the intense heat coming from all of the bodies packed back down in the main room. The headlining act is a local L.A. duo known as DEVINE ELEMENTS. What they bring to the table is something that almost no other artists can compare to, Live Drum and Bass production on stage. Sereously how many people can say they do that. When time came for them to go on the place was packed and every head in the place knew what they were there for, DEVINE ELEMENTS. They started off their set with the crowd raging and cheering them on with decibal levels that almost surpassed what the club speakers were providing. They opened it up with a little bit of hip-hop goodness then going straight into a jam with a melody and bassline that could make the numbest feel. Not moving during the set was not a option since the steady stream of beats wouldnt allow you to not bob your head or move your feeet. The work that they performed was one of a kind. Bringing on stage all synths, mixers, laptops and any other gadgets needed to create their distinguished sound, and one for all vibes. They also supplied into their arsenal a d.j. who was cutting records like well trained record butcher, everytime this guy touched a record the crowd would just get more and more hyped. A beatboxer was also included which toook the set to a unimaginable level.

The act to close up was a D.J. and M.C. Duo Known as MAXIMUM MOVES. Thinking that people would be tired out after the insane set supplied by DIVINE ELEMENTS but that surely was not the case. As soon as the set was done the crowd did a turn to their right(yes there were two stages on the main floor) to see what these two could do. Madness quickly fell upon the crowd as pulsing bass and hectic snares were pumped through onto the crowd of sweaty listeners. These two could not have done a more proper job, the tracks were insane and they were yet another act to bring something to open your puffy eyes a litle wider, both the D.J. and the M.C. rock the mic with a superb distinctive sound that they could only generate. The D.J. would continually grab the mic and supply the M.C. with hooks and verses that sounded all too perfect. The crowd was loving it as masses of what seemed like all of the girls in the club front and center of the stage going off. About halfway into their set they got on the mic and introduced PREYING MANTIS. The crowd all of a sudden circled around two girls under a blue spotlight. The two broke into a dance routine that had the crowd in and focused into what they were doing. Thy went off, busting some moves that would make any individual who thoght they could dance go home with a head full of jealousy. MAXIMUM MOVES just completely killed it as M.C. XYZ said, "last nite the crowd was "'dirty dishes'" cause we all got rinsed the fuk OUT". The people were dope, vibe was off the hook, and the music is amazing, RESPECT is staple in the Los Angeles music scene and should be paid close attention. Everyone needs to go and experience what RESPECT has in store, whether they are into Drum & Bass or not.

Divine Elements Interview

Divine Elements
Redefining Drum & Bass
Interview by Norman Mayers

In the cutthroat world of Los Angeles drum and bass, it can be extremely difficult to make a name for yourself. So how did Concise and Ru, founders of drum and bass live act Divine Elements make an impact in the nations largest drum and bass market? For starters their involvement with the 818 and Grapevinez crews in LA has built them a solid network and position in the scene. But it wasnt until Divine Elements released a DVD and CD titled Defining Moment that they announced their arrival. There are literally hundreds of DJs, but how many live drum and bass acts can you name? Divine Elements hopes to bring something new to the drum and bass community by presenting an all encompassing mood, a vibe that transcends just one track or one sound but one that truly tells a story. Their music unfolds like the lost soundtrack to the Matrix, a futuristic opus that carries both emotional weight and dancefloor appeal. Centered in both the dark and the spiritual, Divine Elements hopes to open your ears to the cinematic quality of drum and bass, a fact that has been lost in favor of the next perfect beat. Urban-Breakbeat was able to get a word from this immense rising talent.

How did you two meet and how was Divine Elements formed?
We met through a mutual friend that was in the scene, and we started kickin it and djing together, and at the time Concise was knee deep in H20 Productions throwing underground parties. Ru came into the company as a dj on the roster and we were really feelin the same styles. Eventually, we wanted more from the music besides just playing other peoples tunes, so we started writing our own.

What is the significance of the name Divine Elements?
The name divine elements was used because Concises name is Devin and the name Ru stands for Ruthenium, which is an element that is combined with platinum to make it stronger and more wear-resistant. Put the two together and you got Divine Elements. The whole idea of elements was also formed from the fact that we dont just consider ourselves the only ones in the group. Divine Elements was formed to collaborate with other artists that bring significant contributions to the group ie: Kris Jung- our beat boxer, Omz- our scratch dj, Kief Life- our Hip Hip mc, and percussionists and vocalists are in the works. We all bring a divine element to the group.

What do you feel you bring to the drum and bass community?
We feel that our music brings a refreshing, significant style to the Drum and Bass community. It really is unlike all the other stuff out there, and its done live on computers and synthesizers, which not many people do in drum and bass. It gives people more of an interactive performance than just watching a dj play records.

Who are some of your influences?
Theres so many, its hard to reference them all. A few would be Roni Size and Reprazent, Chemical Brothers, Prodigy, The Violence crew in San Francisco, Thievery Corporation, underground Hip Hop in general, Ming and Fs are a huge one, and jazz, rock, and classical are all in there too.

What was the vibe you wanted to create with your album Defining Moment?
The vibe we wanted to create with the album was a mesh of different styles of music that not only drum and bass heads would enjoy, but something that would open the doors for people outside the scene as well. We wanted people to experience it like a movie. Something that had ups and downs, not just constant head-banging in your face drum and bass. Its something you can listen to at the club or just driving down the Pacific Coast Highway on a nice day. The album changes up from hard- ass D&B to epic movie soundtrack styles, to chilled out tracks at the end. The album, in itself, is a defining moment in that the theme starts out hard to represent the struggles we all go through to reach our defining moment in life, then moves to epic, to describe the incredible feeling of that moment, then to a chill vibe, which is the release of all those struggles.

What was the concept behind the DVD?
The concept behind the DVD was basically to show people what we do. It showcases our act with tour footage, and also gives people a look at our personal side, with slideshows of us with our homies throughout the tour. We feel that the vibe of the DVD goes hand in hand with the vibe of the album, while showcasing the vision of it as well.

What do you try to achieve with your live show?
When we perform live, the goal is to not only play music, but to give the audience something to look at, and interact with. The act consists of different variations in the set. For instance, we bring our Beatboxer on stage and do renditions of classic rock mixed with hip hop and drum and bass. Its unlike anything youve ever seen.

What equipment are you using during your live performance?
The equipment we use consists of a Mac Powerbook, analog synthesizers, VST plugins, midi controllers, effects processors, turntables, and MCs and vocalists.

Is there a tour in support of the album and DVD release?
Yes, we are currently starting a follow up tour for the album and DVD called the Element of Surprise tour, which includes stops across the states and beyond.

What is in the future for Divine Elements?
Our goal is to eventually become a 5- 8 person live act that involves a culmination of vocalists, percussionists, strings, guitar, and a fully coordinated media and lighting display. We dont want to give away too much, because there wouldnt be any element of surprise.
