Here's the playlist for tomorows Elevenses show. I think its a good idea to include local/local interest acts on the monday, when there's 2 hours to play with - on Fridays, where theres only an hour, it'll be more instantaneous music! I am as always open to suggestions, but bear in mind its the start of the weeknd, so the emphasis is on good mood music! here's this fridays, fyi.. Rena FEILE FM 103.2FM ELEVENSES WITH RENA MAGUIRE 930-1030AM 9 to 5 - Dolly Parton. Everyone needs a little bit of dolly. I got two bits that stand out- you lot get 9 to 5 Summer Fun - Barracudas It was 1980, they were one hit wonders. didnt stop it being merry ! Tawasa Fey- Yara Lebanese Middle eastern popstrel. this is wickedly good, actually. When the Aspens Change - Urban Monroes. A new song for the UMbiquitous Oregon Bluegrass doyens Do Right Woman, Do right man - Aretha Franklin I love this track. theres a 2 octave jump and key change which no human can actially do. Only Aretha.... Golden Feather - Robbie Robertson and the Red Road Ensemble. This is not very well known but rather lovely nonetheless. Nobody does it better - Carly Simon. the only Bond film I eve r liked ( space sex at the end to fuel my Barbarella delusions- whats not to love? ) carly simon was a huge influence on me- proof you can be as glamourous as hell itself and still sound wonderful! Prayer of St Francis - Sarah McLachlan Its just beautiful. Dont think Twice - Bob Dylan Its got sort of odd memories for me, this track, but I thought Id play it anyways. Longer - Dan Fogelberg. because Im the soppiest ass on the planet Slow hand - The Pointer sisters Perhaps one of the top sexiest songs ever made. Rainy Day Man - Patti Scialfa Its mayday- you got to play sexy sort of things! fertility festival and all that!

We're in a tiswas here. We're expecting Isle of Lewis musical doyen Alyth MacCormack as our very special guest this week!!!. ( you say it Ay-leth, btw. Ciaran Doris told me, otherwise I sounded like I had a lisp, bt Im pretty simpleminded anyways) Ive been fielding calls and emails for most of the day from people who already knew all about her and her amazing vocal capacity. I;d heard of her, of course, but I wasnt up to speed with all she was up to. She certainly has a hell of an underground folowing. A new album 'People Like Us' to promote, a concert opening here for oldies Moving Hearts, acclaim all over the place. So, poor woman, dspite all the accolades, she actually consented to come onto the celtic Muppet show. of her own volition. Sweet lassie, but too trusting.... this is no ordinary show mwhahaha . Regulars will know of the mass of strange events which happen on NCS. If it can go wrong/ Oh yes, it will go wrong. On my show. Albeit entertainingly. Yes indeed, odd things happen on NCS!! Give it time, they'll happen on Elevenses too. Told you; things just happen around me! So, Alyth willbe doing the unique 'mouth music', indigenous to the islands of her birth, a now-dying art. Goes way back when the islanders didnt have access to instruments so impro'd, as people will. celtic beatbox, of you like to think of it as such. Her flexibility on The Vices track is mind boggling. Trust me, when she goes acappella, you;re going to want to hear this! As well as this, we've some tracks- lots of new ones, actually - to discuss and enjoy as well! Do tune in this week, wednsday, 2pn on www.feilefm.com, or 103.2FM if in Greater belfast New Celtic Sounds wed 29/4/09 www.feilefm.com 103.2FM for greater belfast. 2PM- 330PM GMT. Falling Out Of Reach - The Guiillemots 3 Blind Mice - The Resistance. ( I suspect they played this after being deeply affected by the NCS experience- that day everything went wrong for them! and sometimes Im even sitting in the corner going lah-lah-lah!) Blackmountain Song - Brendan Popplestone. One of the Amadan mainstays, and of course, main man of NCS faves, the Silverfish. This is a lovely bt of lightness, written in a musical co-operative! Bonnie Light Horseman - Robin James Hurt. From the tallymans lament album. Let Go - Ludwig O'neill, fro the EP of the same name, now available. And he's also going to be accompanying Alyth on The Smugglers Prayer, live. Length of Space - Eoin Dillon Killing Time in the Garden of Eden - Ciaran Dorris. From his sampler, which acts as a teaser to the pending album, due later this year. The World We Made- jeremie rhodes. Son of Kimmie Rhodes, from his first album ,The Giants and How to Kill Them. Obviously more influenced by rock greats, and sounding vaguely like an indie influenced young Dylan. raw but certainly very promising. Dear Prudence - Lau. with backing vocals by Corinne Polwort, this is a pretty and unique take on the old beatles/siouxie sioux song! Actually I didnt know it was a Beatles song, because Im not a big beatles fan. Bit everyone shouted at me about that. feckin' anoraks yis....

Anyone in their 40’s now is the equivalent of Tolkeins oldest elves; we have seen the Light of the Trees; we’ve lived through the Beatles mania, lived through punk, disco, glam rock, mods, rockers, heavy metal. I have always classified, being obsessed by history anyways, that it was my duty as a mother to educate my kids in the music of all those times, as how can one understand a period of history unless you understand that zeitgeist( such an abused 80’s word!).That’s if you want to understand the past- understand it and the future is always a little clearer, I think anyways.
The old musics- its cool for well educated teens. Music which broken new ground, actively created new genres or expanded on existing ones. It wont ever be understood by the morons with their hoods and hoop earrings who cannot get their heads out of their arses long enough to look at what they are being indoctrinated into- a culture of fame for fames sakes, bread and circuses, dross and unthinking music of hyper sexuality which just numbs their brains and fires their hormones- an unhealthy combination. Not that Im adverse to a little firing up of the hormones, but please, in its place , with better music for the boudoir.
Can anyone really enjoy the music and culture being pimped to them via shit like Britains Got Talent, this years utterly dire American Idol, and every reality show ever invented? can someone tell just what the hell has Cheryl Cole ever done apart from bash some wee hussy in a public toilet and call her a few choice names? Aye, I remember that one, before the wee softie act got going and everyone went '" aww! what a nice girl! ". Pointless music, pointless books, pointless culture. the media brainwahses, not promotes.
So, in a vainglorious attempt , for yet another week, a selection of quirkiness , ‘mixing memory and desire in a dead landscape’ as Elliott may have put it.
Real music- now ,please!
Oh, and I have Alyth McCormack as a guest on wednsday- should be immense fun!
Here’s Mondays…
My world today- Secret Affair. Part of 1979’s 60’s revival. Was fun.
Love and happiness for you- Kimmy Rhodes . This was sent to me as a thank you, with the loveliest wee note( now saved on email drafts, cos Im an arse like that). It needs to be heard!
Sea Nomad - Ludwig O’Neill. I am always open to local artists.
The guy who turned her down - McFly. It was a hint of what they could do, away from the teen pop. Nice song- clever and sweet.
Romeo- Mr Big. So, their line up kept changing over the years- this was the raciest of the racy when I was 13. If I close my eyes, Im listening to Mary McCluskeys cassette player in Thomas’s 3, and we know all the words; why? Because its banned in St Dominics!!!
I walk the line- Johnny cash. Everyone likes this, should be on the school curriculum.
Demis Roussos- my friend the wind. Written about my darlin’ Levka oros, and whisks me back to 6months of paradise.
Schooldays over- RJH. You have to look out for your own locals. If you don’t do that, why have ‘cliques’? personally I like to think of them as creative salons.
Our Town - Iris Dement. She’s a goddess. I want to be her.
If I were the rain- Lowen and Navarro. Its delicious and elegant AOR.
I am weary Let me rest- the Cox Family. From O Brother where art thou, still one of my favorite films as it makes me laugh like a drain. Bit I am very silly indeed.
Hold on, Rebel- Lowly Knights. it’s a great song, they deserve mucho successo.
The Game of Love- Santana and Michelle Branch. Its just gorgeous- it sounds like beaches.
Beirut -peter sarstedt. I suspect I may be the last person alive remembers this. I loved it, when in 1978, on hot summer nights down on my uncle eugenes farm, Id hear this song and feel so grown up that I knew where Beirut was! Ahh.. Sancta simplistica!
Evangeline - The Band. Its what it is.
Emotion- Samantha Sang. Im sure beyonce is a lovely girl, but her version of this 77 classic was shite. This the real deal.
Carolina Smoky Mountain Hme - special consensus band. They may as well be belfast, ffs. Nigels’s stable!
Betcha by Golly Wow - Prince. From the rather odd Emancipation album. So kitch its wonderful!
Angels Rejoiced last Night - Gram Parsons and Emmylou. We need more Gram played. He changed a lot of the alt. country ‘tude, and deserves respec’ for it. This is pretty accessible wee track by anone I think.
Candy man - Christina Aguilera. I love this. I do have my own ruder version, it usualy takes a few drinks for it to come out- though havent sang it since the Rott…. Still, this is good!

The take over- the breaks over!
we're back in business for good music on Monday at 930am on Feile FM.
So, wothout firther ado, the playlist for Monday morning- with a massive "thank you!!" to Ricard duplantis, sourcer of great music par excellence! without him, I would not know who Lowen and Navarro are, let alone be playing them! You see? things even slip past me without me hearing of them! And thats annoying when they were named as one of the top influential Americana artists of the past 20 years.
The Patti Scialfa album has been an eye opener , with several tracks now ensconced on me ipod.Im playing one of them - Rainy day man. Its one of those songs I find meself going automatically into lap dance mode, which can be disturbing to both dogs and children. Im sure there are infinitely more appropriate circumstances to utilise such urges in LOL
As well as Doc and Bill, Jimmy Buffett, Old Crow Medicine Show ( I actually do a reasonable cover of this song!!!), Guillemots, I have local artists too... locals are always welcome on my shows.Encouraged, in fact, as it gets right up the noses of the big fellers in record companies.
Anyways.....930am-1130am, 103.2FM, when breakfast doesnt satisfy? Elevenses will! promise! ( or you can shout at me LOL)
www.feilefm.com Mnday Morning.Elevenses , with Rena Maguire
Zambezi- the Piranhas. It was 1982 if I recall. I was in the CND. The sun shone. It was happy protest music.
worrisome heart- Melody Gardot. Lookie what a bike accident can do for ya!This song sounds like me LOL Born worriers everywhere, take heart!
Spencer the Rover - cara Dillon. this is a tasty bit of niceness form her album , Hill of Thieves.
You are not alone- The Eagles. taken from the Long Road out of Eden album. Mellowed and nifty. The queue on the left is for ripped copies of the album.
wagon Wheel - Old Crow Mmedicien show. I have a soft spot for this as I was taught some chord transitions to this by the boul' Ludwig. As a result of OCD practice, I actually can do a decent cover of this old dylan song. Not as good as this lot, and I aint whupped its ass on banjer yet, but give me time!
There's a Guy works down the chipshop swears he's elvis - Kirsty McColl. This is a wondererful romp of kitch and sarcasm, as only thelate great Kirsty could do.
Sea Nomad- Ludwig O'Neill. support cottage industries!
Rainy day man- patti scialfa. maybe its the red headed thing- after all, Patti is Mrs Springsteen and a redhead of considerable fire and spirit ( and we like Bruce for appreciating blondes get diry too fast and brunettes are boring). This is my new bump ' b grind song when making food. You may want to avoid my scullery for a while!
Trust - prince. Trust will kill ya, he sings. aint that the goddam truth.
Be nobody's Darling but mine- carl Jackson and emmylou. Its so wholesome I had to play it. as pefect as cold spring water from the top of a hill after a hot days climb.
The bargain store- dolly Parton. Since referred to in Ulster Music as the Prada Dolly Parton, I amonly more firmly entrenched in my affections for Dolly. This songs one of my favorites, as by 40, its the truth. One persons mistake is anothers bargain.
Schooldays Over- Robin james Hurt. Ewan McColls stomp to the colliery groove. It has never sounded as good. Robin is in the Hewitt on April 22nd, and damn I wil be there!!! The legend we carry tarten scarfs and scream before he comes onto the stage is a lie( partially)
Fox on the Run - Doc Watson and Bill Monroe. They just arent played on radio these days, even country shows... let me rectify that.
Compas Point - Lowen and navarro. This is such a delicious piece of americana.. feedback would be appreciated. If you want a sneak preview, email me and I'll happily send an mp3 of it to you.
Faling out of reach- the Guillemots. If anyone ever thinks indoe is just for kids, think again. This is a strange blend of liquid summer and melancholy.
A pitratelooks at 40 - jimmy biffett... I wish Id written this song!
Down by the lake - mcFly. its happy, and applies to all ages who have sweeties parenst dont approve of! Its a happy bit of fun for the younger ones! My kids make me do it!
Luck of the irish - Finvarras wren. This is sweet and delicate and lovely
Hold on to your Love - taylor Hicks. One of my favorures forthe Under the radar album

This is where it gets a bit weird; pre-records. A couple of weeks ago, we were all in a flurry , doing our shows easter week pre-records. Xmas and new year was quite surreal, as was easter; blasting through a play lost which you’re going to be sitting listening to and then saying to yourself- ‘ jeez, you are such a classic bullshit merchant, Maguire!!!’ Anyways, for those who need to know; the april15th play list for New celtic Sounds. I’ll be back again, on Monday morning , april 20th 2009, live and sort of dangerous ( for the age of me!). Amd I will be posting the play lists expected there too!
Wed April15th 2009 New Celtic Sounds 103.2FM, or www.feilefm.com for international streaming 2-330 PM GMT Burning Times - Christy Moore. Its about time you lot understood easter is a pagan festival( Eostara) first and foremost- Christianity hijacked it. Christy knows, though!
Roisin Dubh - The Flying Column. Remembrance is important. This, my rmemebrance to much loved friends long gone.
The Wind that Shakes The Barley- Planxty. One of the best reels , and much loved by tourists, hence I play it a lot!
Thank God Im a Country Boy - John Denver. This man culd sing. He encapsulated elegant vocals with the soaring grace of melody of a bird on a sunny day. This is a happy wee rabble rouser.
Stuck - Ard Ri. Derry’s finest sons, this is a much loved track, a great crowd pleaser on the show.
Don’t know what to say - Ludwig. Im delighted to see this beautiful and poignant song ( which is a very personal one for me) is going to be on the much awaited album. This is heart rendingly delicate and beautiful. And its mine so pffffftttttt!!!!!
Lassie wi’ the yella’ coatie - Kornog. it’s a super dipes track, this, made to make you jig a bit!
Lass of Glenshee- cara Dillon. Spotted this advertised in HMV the other day. The girls done good!
Marc’h Darfur - Dom Duff. I love this track which speaks of fresh air and cliff tops and wild birds. Maybe there’s a little breton blood in me? I doubt this, but it triggers something wonderful in the soul!
Marcus McSpartacus - eoin Dillon. Even my eldest girl, not prone to diddley-dee music loving, adores this album The Third Twin. I play this when I’m cleaning the house, and it speeds everything along with delight!
The Kesh Jig- the Bothy band. I love the Bothy, and this is my favorite track from 1975 I do believe! I remember my mate Paula’s brothers playing this, when I was form one!
Days like this- Van Morrison. I don’t care; it’s a happy off-work lazy day track!
When the aspens change- The Urban Monroes.Theyre stars, all the way from Oregon. Please god one day they’ll play here!
Aphrodite - Tony Reidy. This is my favorite track! Its gorgeous, and makes me think of Cyprus and many good mates- Angela Pittakis, Chrissie Aristedemou, Nikki Papadakos, all the reasons I speak reasonably decent Greek! LOL
Follow me up to carlow - Amadan. This is maybe the definitive version of the 1798 rebellion song. It simply, unequivocally rocks its damn head off. As do al the fellers from Amadan. We love them all.
Au Fond Kiss- Eddie Reader. The Rabbie Burns poem, put to music by the voice that should sing this- loved her in her early career with fairground Attraction, and shes still the lie drawn in the sand, of excellence in all things.

I am not a teeny bopper, gentle reader, and as such, show times have been changed to suit a more, erm... varied taste! As from Monday 6th april 2009., My new show willbe called Elevenses, with a variety of americana, country, bluegrass, local, world- hell, anything thats quite simply good, but doesnt kind of fit in anywhere else! I welcome , as with new celtic sounds, good music from any source- local, vintage, world; aint no genre Im more compatible with ( though yeah, bluegrass and country get a bigger heating , bit Im biased!) - quite simply the good stuff gets played, and the other stuff kimd of isnt my problem! Broaden your minds, kids... its Elevenses on Feile FM, from 930-1130am Mondays, and 930-1030am on Fridays. This monday? Howzat... Summetime- jazzy jeff and the Fresh prince. For me, anyway, this was pushing my pram woith my eldest in it, mars bar in one hand, coke in the other, drssed in the gunge of the time and having a ball! God I loved my pram for shopping!! Bad Company - Cat Malojian. Theyre about to grow up on us, and are now signed to Sony/BMG. Bit theyre still our moggies from Lurgan! jailhouse rock- elvis. Over the Hill- John Martyn. yep, possoble w're all heading that dorection, but whocares when its as good as this? Weile weile - Mohammed Mounir. the folk singer of southern egypt, this is a classic take on the berber folk song of how one needs to get back to your roots when that south wind blows around your very soul... wondrous, truly! and a great video too! River of Dreams - Billy Joel. theres few who could make a song about the akashic theory and make it this good! respec'! Shenandoah - Arlo Guthrie. its was a rover of hopes and dreams and this is a song i love, as my auntie god rest her used to sing it to me when I was a wee kid ! Bury me beneath the willow - skaggs and rice. because you need this for break time. carmelita- warren zevon. human frailty and faith and love in less than 3 minuyes; this is bliss. lets give them somethng to talk about- Bonnie riatte. should be my theme tune LOL Harbour Lights - The Platters. the best doowop band wo ever existed, par excellance! Never Think- rob Pattinson. suspend the fact hes a teen idol, and just enjoy this side of what he does that the teeny boppers dont know about, and shh! Im not going to tell! its obvious his mammy brought him up on Van Morrison, so he;s a nice boy! I know yu rider - Nell Bryden. My god where do this girls mighty voice come from? this is powerful! hearts and bones - paul simon - this is one of my favorte simon tracks, its lurics are gracious and elegaic, yet tender, with no bitterness, despite it being the elegy of his marriage to carrie fisher. Come away Home - Robin James Hurt. Its still an amazing track, and should be heard by all and sundry. Stuck- ard ri. this girl is not for sale, she cried, is the first line of this- kind of triggers something in me LOL This is a joyous bit of rabble rousing from derry's mighty sons, ard ri! Single Ladies - party ben mix, beyonce. Tis as catchy as ebola, this, but great fun! Good music can simply be a terrific bit of mixing, which lifts a good song into being amazing.I think the party ben mix here does this to a good healthy r and B bit of froth. Not a damn thing wrong with a bit of pop, as long asits good!

Sorry this is so late.. today has been insane; all the last minute things prepared for JJ mcDubies imminent arrival tomorrow, and various own work things to do as well has rendered me slightly pixilaited! I kind of dreaded today and the amount of things that had to be done, like create 2 shows, as we're off at easter in feile and theres pre records to be done tomorrow as well. A very wise latin teacher once said to me..' how do you eat an elephant?' and we, as silly giggling eejits didnt know...' one bite at a time' he said. and its true... when making the biggets changes, you do it one wee tiny bit at a time- and dont look down!!!! so...
