Scratch software is a free and easy way to create cool games, animations, music, and interactive stories.  Developed by the MIT Media Lab, you use building blocks from different menus to create actions/sounds/abilities for the characters you create and the backgrounds you develop.  Logic has never been so much fun!  Teens Online, the Teen Action Group who advises our library system about TeenLinks, is hosting a Scratch contest this April.  Check out this cool animation in the TeenLinks Scratch Gallery to find out how to participate.

I always have fun browsing the best books of the year lists that appear in magazines and online.  I took a look at Amazon's Top Ten for Teens list which follows:

The Arrival by Shaun Tan

Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie

Wildwood Dancing by Juliet Marillier

Twisted by Laurie Halse Anderson

Undercover by Beth Kephart

Someday This Pain Will Be Useful to You by Peter Cameron

A Crooked Kind of Perfect by Linda Urban

The Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt

Evil Genius by Catherine Jinks

What do you think should be on this list?  What other lists do you recommend looking at?

Glad you found our MySpace page.  We also have a Facebook page and a Facebook group and catalog widget.  Like photography?  We take lots of pictures at our libraries and post many of them to the Hennepin County Library Flickr account.  Feel free to friend us in any of these places.  What social spaces do you hang out in online?

Humorous poet John Grandits (author of Blue Lipstick: Concrete Poems as well as Technically, It's Not My Fault: Concrete Poems) and chick lit writer Catherine Clark (author of So Inn Love and Maine Squeeze) will be visting a number of our libraries during our celebration of Teen Read Month in October (a week just isn't enough!).  The theme is LOL @ Your Library, and we hope you find lots to laugh about as you explore author programs, book clubs, gaming events, and more in our buildings.  Online, vote for the comic Who Tells the Best Joke Ever, fill out a fine waiver, and discover books lists such as Laughing Out Loud

The International Teen Club (ITC) at Brookdale Library has been named one of the top five young adult programs in the nation by the Young Adult Library Services Association, with a cash prize of $1000. The mission of the ITC is to engage Hmong youth in creating programs for other Hmong youth at the library, especially programs that help them maintain their Hmong roots.

Nong Lee, Hmong outreach staff member, oversees the ITC whose programs are funded by the Hennepin County Library Foundation. All honorees will be included in the fifth edition of "Excellence in Library Service to Young Adults," to be published in summer 2008. Winners will also be featured in a program at the 2008 American Library Association Annual Conference in Anaheim, California.

Some ITC activities include: knitting club, Hmong flute class, poetry slams, creative writing workshops, poetry publication, kite making workshop, field trips, author visits, cultural celebrations, fashion shows, talents shows, DVD production (from developing storyline to script writing to shooting and editing video), volunteer parties, Karaoke contests, DDR (Dance Dance Revolution) and other tech programs. See ITC in action  on TeenLinks. If you'd like to join the ITC, contact Nong through the Brookdale Library!

Thanks to Patrick Jones and Nong Lee in Hennepin County Library's Outreach Services for sharing this information!
