----------WE NEED YOUR HELP----------

You may have noticed that we've put up some dates for our september tour. We are looking for some more shows on the following dates:

15/09 (West Germany or South Belgium)
18/09 (Southern or central Poland)
25/09 (Between Prague and Luxembourg)

If you are interested email me at manuelhugo@hotmail.com. We can play pretty much anywhere. We once played in a courtyard of a block of flats in Toulouse! True story.

Hey, in other news: we played our first show of the year (!) on Friday. We played lots of new material that we've been writing for the last few months. More on that later, but I shall be putting up a demo we recently recorded pretty soon.

Hugo

Current mood:  awake

I have just been reliably informed that there are less than ONE HUNDRED copies of the VERTICAL MONTANAS 7" available to buy from the MOTIVE SOUNDS online shop. So hurry hurry. HERE

I should also say that both ourselves and Try Harder Records have completely run out of Lions and Sunny Casinos, meaning these albums are all but SOLD OUT. But I imagine there are some online shops (and real life shops) that still have some in stock.

We never finished the blog! Oh dear! I suppose you all just assumed that we stayed in Spain, and set up new lives for ourselves there? Well it did cross our minds.

Anyway, the four days in Madrid were great fun. Barcelona was rainy, but nice, and the journey back to oxford (via Bordeaux and Paris) was LONG.

We spent a day in Madrid at RTVE (which is like the Spanish BBC) promoting the shit out of ourselves. We did a radio interview/acoustic session at 10 in the morning and then later that day recorded for 'Los Conciertos de Radio 3' on La2 (BBC2?) in front of a audience made up for people apparently pulled from the street. You guessed it... it was pretty weird! But probably the best thing ever at the same time.

You can listen to our session and interview on Radio 3 Espana here. Please bear in mind that it was 10 in the morning, live, and completely unrehearsed. I think the DJ was called Magda, and Noemi from Acuarela kindly did the translating.

So here is something a little overdue... it was inevitable, but we..re a little out of date with our blog. We..ve actually been in Madrid for 2 days already, but Madrid stories will have to wait until the next entry (TV and Radio sessions, and instore gigs to follow...)

The best thing about travelling through Spain is the Tortilla de Patatas which dominate every service station cafe like Ginsters does in Britain. Its a potato omlette, usually served with bread, and if you are lucky a slice of roasted green pepper. I must have eaten at least one slice every day we have been in Spain. So we kick a ball around a service station in the middle of nowhere in northern Spain, en route to Valladolid. Sam and I have an ongoing competition to see who can do the most keepy-ups. Today he beat me at 7, where I can only reach 6. The rest of Jonquil can do keepy-ups seemingly indefinitely.

Valladolid is a great gig, and we get to hang out with two of our favorite promoters ever, Juan and Piedro, and Jesus Llorente, the boss of our European label, Acuarela. He has come from Madrid to Valladolid just to see us tonight, and he is genuinely one of the funniest men I know. So we drink away in an Irish pub until late and slump into our far-too-good-for-us Hotel, and wake up next day with savage hangovers and facing another country! PORTUGAL!

We arrive in Aveiro a little early, and we are greeted with some kind of bizarre ritualistic parade of freshmen students, marching around in circles chanting their fraternity chants or something like that. We are dumbfounded, and retreat to the Mercado Negro, which is a whole building of small independant shops and bars, and a small auditorium which is one of my favorite places ever to play. The show is sold out, we sign a lot of CDs and play a lot of pool.

The next day is spent mostly at the beach 10 minutes drive from Aveiro. We spend more time than we thought we would kicking a ball into the sea and then chasing the waves to pick iut up and kick it back in. These are proper waves though, and we mostly get very wet. We get Porto with a couple of hours to be tourists and its totally worth it, as its proberly the best city i..ve been to in a long long time. Loads of huge, drammatic bridges over a gleaming river inlet, and old, high buildings lining the most narrow and steep streets. Also, Portugal seems to be all about the food. No tortilla de patatas here, insted we are treated to authenic portuguese Octopus and rice dishes and Pork stew, complete with its own kind of black-pudding.

These shows have all been very busy and Lisbon is no exception. We are playing in a legendary venue called ZDB..s, which two days ago had No Age play, and next week has Silver Mt. Zion. As with all these Portuguese shows, we play at about midnight, and so its hard not to have a late night after winding down post-show. We sleep in a lovely band flat, which is right on the one street in Lisbon where EVERYONE in the whole city seems to spend their evening. Walking into my bedroom was like walking into a rammed bar, but i sleep very soundly, a feel a bit weird thinking that Bonnie Prince Billy was sleeping in this room (possibly this bed?) last month!

So we drive to Madrid, which takes about 7 hours, and I can..t really remember anything about that journey, apart from watching Bring It On, and the DVD player skipping and jamming at the final cheerleader routine. I almost cried. I think i cared a little more than everyone else.

Hugo.

Hello. Hello. Hello.

I am pretty impressed with myself that this has even lasted this long, but here we are well in to tour, with five gigs played and the first French leg over with, from here on its Spain and Portugal, which means (hopefully): hotter weather, nice hotels, bigger shows, and cheaper everything. We have had an amazing time in France these last few days, and somewhat amazingly, NOTHING HAS GONE WRONG YET. Fingers crossed.

So we have known for a few days that Nimes would have been an unknown quantity for us, as the venue had cancelled a few days ago, so the promoter found the only place that was available, an Irish Bar call O'Flaherty's. Nothing really Irish about this pub apart from some St Patricks Day hats and Guinness on Tap. Anyway, the show was great in the end and we were all in partying spirits, especially as it was Denis, the promoter's birthday. We went back to his flat and drank champagne and ate the most lavish chocolate and pear cake i have ever seen.

Then to toulouse and the weather becomes beautiful but we ignore it, completely enthralled by Pirates of the Carribean, as we approach the ..venue'. On arrival we are offered the choice between playing in a fair sized room filled with all the most incredible keyboqrds, organs and synths you could imagine (for us nerds this was awesome) or playing outside in a star lit courtyard surrounded by vines and creepers. What with the weather being so nice we went for the outdoor option and the show was awesome; great crowd, we played well regardless of the i,protu acoustic-ness, we sold a lot of records and drank a lot of booze, entirely making up for the lack of a fee. We had a lot of fun making the promoter, Stephan, shout football factory based profanities at his friends such as "Jonathan, don't fuck about!.. only joshing mate, you're diamond."

Two and a half hours drive to Boucau, near Bayonne in the Basque region of France, very near the spanish border. We are plqying another house show today, but in somthing of an established house/venue called La Maison. Its a really nice space, and the crowd is really responisve. The rain was intense though... arn't we in the south of France?! We ate lots of Quiche and had a real early night. Half of us watched Kidulthood to show our hosts what our lives back in England are like. Drugs, teenage pregnancy and gun crime. Thats our life.

So we are about to hit up Spain and i'm gonna get me a Omlette sandwich.

sweet dreams.

Hello

We're going to try to keep this up, a TOUR BLOG! So keep checking every couple of days and there might be something vaguely interesting and new to read. So, the tour felt like it started on thursday with a last minute practice at a new rehearsal studio in the outback of oxfordshire (on a farm near a village called Chalgrove, which is near nowhere in particular). We packed the van and packed our bags, all laying down to sleep at two in the morning, ready to leave at seven in the morning. We all did it though, despite everyones predictions and made the ferry and everything!

The venue in Paris, The Maroquinerie, is a 500 capacity jobby, and we were supporting a band called Swell, who none of us had heard of, but seemed to have a big following, because the gig sold out ages ago. We were given a lovely two course dinner and nice beer and hung out with lots of old friends who were in Paris for various reasons. The show was good and we felt like we won the crowd over although a shot of strong espresso immediately before walking onstage didn't do much to quell the nerves.

And then a four hour drive to Lyon, to a very strange venue called Grrrnd Zero which is very much in a rubbish part of Lyon, in an old office block which still feels very much like a office block. Anyway, sweet show and beds in the building, so we end up staying up late and getting drunk in the venue, and then stumbling upstairs to sleep.
Things we've enjoyed:
Meeting a guy who's name almost directly translated to 'Fuck The Police', legendary.
A re-emurgence of the rizla game.
Headstand Competitons.
Jody punching a mannequin in his sleep.
Hootie being stage 2.

I have just woken up to Brioche and Nutella, and now the coffee is ready, so see ya later!
