Current mood:  determined
The kind folks over at the Dallas Morning News posted this about Zykos on Sunday. This is mighty sweet, although Catherine has been in the band since the beginning. Heh.

Who deserves to be a 2008 music success? POP MUSIC: Which Texas acts are worthy of big-time success?
Zykos Austin's Zykos raised many eyebrows and much industry interest as a quartet a few years ago with two CDs full of inventive and passionate lo-fi rock explorations. But the addition in early 2007 of keyboardist-vocalist Catherine Davis to guitarist-frontman Mike Booher's soul-laced exclamations had caused a paradigm shift in both the band's general appeal and somewhat kinky and moody indie pop. The four songs on its latest recording, Keep It Light EP, makes most hot-to-trot Brooklyn-based rock acts sound like they're merely tuning up. The title track sounds like Explosions in the Sky mixed with Nick Cave, and "October Rain" feels like a Joe Cocker anthem by way of the Doors, Billy Joel and Eisley. The ideas are original, the execution novel and the direction smart and recognizably Texan. M.D. {WebAudio} Hear music, watch videos and learn more at guidelive.com /musicblog.

Podcast: A music mix for '08 During the holiday break, I took home a giant bag full of new CDs. In the first Pop Candy podcast of 2008, you'll hear some of the best music that's on the way, as well as hidden gems you may have overlooked.
Highlights include:
- A track from British Sea Power, a band I mentioned as last week's "best CD I heard";
- A new song from Athens, Ga., band The Whigs that I still can't get out of my head;
- A Serge Gainsbourg cover performed by Okkervil River;
- Tunes from from French rockers Neimo, Nashville's De Novo Dahl and Austin's Zykos that will definitely make you dance. This is not a somber compilation!
OK, enough of my introductory jibber jabber. Put on your headphones and listen now:
