RWD catch-up with the one half of melody makers, Dirty Star, to discuss the collaboration with Fumin, live performances and their debut LP, Return of the Ruler

We keep hearing your name but who do Dirty Star actually consist of?

Dirty Star is a duo, myself Star and my brother RL. He's not interested in doin' press stuff at all. He's solely into the music.
Where did you get that name from? Are you a naughty celeb or do you not wash or something?
I firmly believe that we are all 'stars', but not in that Jodie Marsh sort of way. More in the way of recognising ones value and talent. At the same time we are not perfect hence the 'dirty' aspect. I put the Dirty with the Star... wholah.
Explain what you listened to when growing up?
I listened to lots of reggae and dub music. Then I got into D&B and hip hop through exchanging music at school. Then I went crazy and started listening to every spectrum of music under the sun including electro, indie, broken beats, grime ect...
How would you describe your voice?
My voice is passionate, sometimes very high, I scream a lot and some girls think its shaggable!
We've seen you in the likes of NME and such, explain your sound?
Its alternative music. Its raw, dirty, edgy... I'm inspired by artists like Rza, Beck, Tricky, Cody ChesnuTT, Gary Numan. I tell people, just give it a few listens.
What's all this about you being 'The Black Mick Jagger'?
It's about my family telling me that I remind them of a black Mick Jagger when I perform on stage.
So who has supported your cause apparently Radio 1's Giles Peterson is a big fan…
I seem to get more radio love abroad. Places like Spain, Italy, Japan and parts of the States and Germany. But I do know that Giles bought a copy of [our second EP] Illphonic back in the day!
What do you think about UK music right now?
UK music is very exciting right now cos of the DIY nature of it all. There's a lot of experimentation going on, mixing of the genres… I love it! We're both liking the likes of Lightspeed Champion, Fumin, Friendly Fires, Trim, Foals and Amy Winehouse.
When and why did you link up with MC Fumin (of Pow! fame) on Gangster Boogie?
I called him up and said I got a tune for you. I told him that it was inspired by Lee "Scratch" Perry, Curtis Mayfield, Slum village and RZA. He liked it and so I went down to east London to record it with him. Fumin is the best MC in the grime game right now in my opinion.
'What what' is he up to?
He's got his new mixtape Paid In Full Vol. 2 coming out in '09. I know it's a banger so watch out for it!
Tell us about Return of the Ruler?
I channelled the spirits of Curtis, "Scratch" Perry, Beck, Rza, Gary Numan, ChesnuTT and Dirty Star with this. It's all about recognising the star within you and being the ruler of your own destiny.
Which is your favourite track? And what was it like putting the album together?
I don't have a favourite, but I'm most proud of the tune with Fumin. Making the LP was the best experience so far. Maybe it was because of the license we had to go completely wild with it. Right now I'm working on a side project called 'The Glamourous', with a new singer called Emma Michelle. Expect the real back to basics stuff with that record.
Tell us about your live performance? Where and when can we see you?
I like to move on stage and get involved with the audience. I'm a entertainer of the highest order and you'll be able to see me live in a town near you in the first part of '09 onwards. The next step for us is getting the video clip (directed by Sheridan De Myers) for Gangster Boogie edited for MTV etc. for January, releasing the LP Return of the Ruler in Feb/ Mar 09. Oh and by the way my hot new single Gangster Boogie Ft. Fumin is out now on iTunes and 12 inch vinyl... go get it!!!

Download single "Gangster Boogie" and album "Return of the Ruler"

www.myspace.com/dirtystar2

Midlands based Phurry Records releases Dirty Star's highly acclaimed single "Gangster Boogie" from their up-coming album "Return of the Ruler", available at all good retailers and downloadable from iTunes now!

Dirty Star (brothers Star and RL) is shining bright and destined to rise fast with this Jazz/Funk and Hip-Hop/Soul fused track featuring top Grime artist Fumin, that will take listeners through the journey of a young man to wannabe gangster, and have them reach for the rewind button time and time again.

Often compared to Prince and Outcast and even hailed as the 'Black Mick Jagger' by NME, Star, the 23 years old flamboyant singer-songwriter of Dirty Star says of his 'Gangster Boogie,' "As the first release from my latest album, I had to bring something a little different to the table and the 'Gangster Boogie' track and video have done just that. For this track, I embodied different genres of music to express different feelings and emotions that I feel and see in my everyday life."

"Gangster Boogie" the first release off "Return of the Ruler" was inspired by a sketch from Chris Rock's in 'Bring the Pain' which Star adapted to a UK perspective and based it around people known to him. With lines like ("…He doesn't ever wanna go to skool. He says it starts too early its just for fools. So he just stays outside and starts a riot…"), Star reveals something closer to home. Star says, "As a young man, I consider 'Gangster Boogie' a true depiction of real life for a majority of youngsters living in UK inner cities."

Dirty Star has been a refreshing change to the UK urban scene with their organic way of creating music, using some influences of Afrobeat, Funk and Jazz in their sounds, instead of imitating the usual synthesis approach. "We're more Leftfield, Star explains. It's all played by us; no outside producers, remixing or anything like that – It's definitely all us".

The soon to be video release of "Gangster Boogie" by acclaimed UK director Sheridan De Myers (Revlon, Blak Twang, Pharaoh Monche) isn't the typical urban video, that sometimes relishes on using booty-shaking women, but quite an innovative piece based on a young women's journey through struggle and survival in London.

Another Episode was used for The Bertallosophie ffwd vol.4 compilation album released nationwide in Italy by V2 records July/August 2005. The Mad Raven - in monostereo (2006) was released By Damon Albarn's label Honest Jons in Japan, USA and Europe. Dirty Star have been supported worldwide by Scanner fm (Spain), Radio-Deejay (Italy), 1xtra (UK), Kiss 100 (UK), Galaxy fm (UK), Juice fm (UK), Kusf fm (San Francisco), Samurai fm (Japan) etc… New single 'Gangster Boogie' Features UK Grimes brightest star FUMIN.
