Dear fans and supporters,

Over the last few years, so many of you have asked me when I plan to release a new album. I'm always being asked when "Colors" and "Wow and Flutter" will be for sale on iTunes. It has been way too long since my last full length release and it's time to get back in the studio! So, I am calling on YOU to be a part of my next endeavor. Without the support of my fans, I wouldn't be where I am today.

The right label has not yet presented itself and I don't want to depend on a label to get this going. I've already been able to do some really amazing things independently and without a label. We're playing Lollapalooza this year, Perez Hilton has featured "Colors" on his site I've toured the country! If I do this on my own, I will have more creative freedom to make the album that YOU have been asking for, and that I want to make. The main thing that has been standing in my way has been having the finances to do this. In order to make this album, I need money for a studio and producer. After budgeting and crunching numbers, $10,000 would be a great starting point. I know that with your help we can achieve this goal together, and hopefully even surpass it! Because if we do, we might even be able to hire a publicist, plan a tour, and give this album the push that it needs to be a success!

I have decided to partner with a wonderful company called Kickstarter. Kickstarter helps people fund their projects by providing a medium, kickstarter.com, to raise money and keep things organized. It allows fans to invest on different levels and get cool stuff in return. Also how great is it that you can help be part of the whole process and help make this possible? I hope you'll all become a part of my project at Kickstarter.com. We've got until September 8th to raise this money so let's do this! I'm confident that with your help we can make a really amazing album together!

xo,
April

Last night, I ventured out into the damp night to catch Henry Wolfe at Coco 66 in Greenpoint.  I had been dying to see this fellow for some time and last night I was fortunate enough to get the chance.

Accompanied by a lone horn player and his guitar, Henry played a fine batch of songs from his latest release, Wolfe Sings Field.  Though his friend, Peter Field, penned the songs, Wolfe manages to deliver each one with honesty and care. Field’s witty vignettes-cum-songs compliment Wolfe’s earnest vocals perfectly, and vice versa.  Every song was a different story and Wolfe told them all as if they were his own. It’s incredibly refreshing to see a performer who knows who he is and isn’t afraid to let the audience see that person. The aloof hipster act is so stale and I was glad not to find it anywhere in sight last night. It was just Wolfe being Wolfe, and it was pretty spectacular.

If you haven’t checked out this skillful songster yet, now is the time. He’ll be playing Public Assembly tomorrow, Saturday June 13th, at 3 PM as part of the Northside Festival in Williamsburg. He will be accompanied by an orchestra, which I imagine will only  make the show even more magnificent. You may also want to pick up your very own copies of The Blue House and Wolfe Sings Field.  You'll find Henry among my top friends here on Myspace...go have a listen now!

Sass and Class by Nancy Chow

April Smith and the Great Picture Show brings it back to the old school basics, where the key is full female vocals supported by great instrumentation - not modern girls with digitized alien voices and trite lyrics.  But Smith doesn't need to ride the coattails of the successful throwback trend to mesmerize listeners; this bird can croon and her band sure can swing.

With her varied, genre-leaping song structures, Smith falls somewhere in the cross-section between Duffy, Tom Waits, Amanda Palmer and the Andrew Sisters.  She flirts and manipulates jazz, rock and '50s pop to create a nostalgic but undeniably contemporary mash.

Smith and her band's entertaining theatrical sass and stage class stage a smoky, sexy cabaret show for the ear.  Her jazzy vocals swoop up and down with such grace and emotion that it entices bystanders to pull up a chair and stay for a spell.  One minute, the seductress will melt hearts with her gorgeous, unguarded ballads, but the next minute she will threaten to eat her victims in large consuming bites to a rollicking tune.  And with a rocking kazoo interspersed in some lively musical numbers, it's guaranteed to be a good time.
