Mayfest Seeks Art from Tulsa’s
College Students

The 2009 Mayfest specialty gallery has been created to showcase the artwork
of Tulsa’s most promising creative class: college students.

Tulsa International Mayfest is seeking entries from area college students to
participate in the Mayfest Exhibition of College Artists. The visual arts
exhibition will be held in the Park Centre lobby during Tulsa International
Mayfest, from Thursday May 14th- Sunday May 17th.

This year’s show is “The Urban Landscape,” which was chosen for its focus on
Tulsa’s growing recognition of a strong core, an embracing of urbanity, and the
way that Tulsa’s creative class views that space. Interpretations of this theme
are left up to the artist and creativity is both encouraged and expected.
Submissions are due on April 7th, 2009.  Artists may submit works in the
following mediums: ceramics, clay, digital art, drawing, fiber, glass,
graphics/printmaking, metal, mixed media, painting, pastel, photography,
sculpture and wood.

All artists submitting work must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate
student of a Tulsa area college or university. All artwork submissions should
be made via email, one image per email. Please put “Mayfest College Gallery
Submission” as the subject and provide artist name, phone number, email, title,
media and price (if applicable) in the body of the email with each submission.
Then, attach the image of your artwork to the email, no larger than 1 MB, and
send to collegegallery@tulsamayfest.org
Please limit your submissions to two works. Artists whose work is selected will
be notified by email by April 24th.

For more information, please contact Elizabeth Downing, College Gallery
Chair, at 918-277-3786 or collegegallery@tulsamayfest.org.

Mayfest Call for Volunteers

......Organizers
of 2009 Tulsa International Mayfest, scheduled to take place May 14-17 in the
heart of beautiful downtown Tulsa, are seeking volunteers for the
festival.  Mayfest volunteers are vital to the festival’s
success.   Each year, volunteers log thousands of hours, which make
the festival the nationally renowned event that it has become.

Both individual and corporate team volunteers are needed for the following
categories: coupon sales, beverage sales, souvenir sales, Youth Art Gallery
host, College Gallery host, KidZone activities, and artist relations.  The
festival needs approximately 800 volunteers over the four-day event.
Volunteer shifts are approximately 3-4 hours each and volunteers are welcome to
work one or more shifts throughout the festival.

To join our amazing team of 2009 Mayfest volunteers, visit www.tulsamayfest.org
to download a volunteer application or contact Mayfest Volunteer Coordinator,
Barbara Pendleton, at 918-951-1664.  We look forward to seeing you at this
year’s festival.

YMCA is Moving

As you have probably seen by now, the YMCA of Greater Tulsa has begun
renovations to the historic Mayo Building at 424 South Main Street. This project
will create a new, 23,000-square-foot YMCA branch in the middle of Tulsa’s core
business district.

Come January 2010, the YMCA will be in the completely renovated space that
will include a cardio area, strength and conditioning center, a Spirit, Mind
and Body Center, classrooms for everything from Tae Kwan Do to Pilates, locker
rooms, a sauna and whirlpool, and Child Watch services for members. The space
will also house YMCA metro offices and community outreach offices.

In order to stay in the current location, new building regulations would
have required making extensive renovations to the current downtown location,
forcing the YMCA to incur substantial costs beyond their reach. However, the
YMCA has been in downtown Tulsa for 100 years in 2009, and is committed to
having a facility here—hopefully for another 100 years! Also, moving the new
facility into the Mayo Building helps bring a piece of Tulsa’s history back to
life. The YMCA’s current downtown location is listed with a real estate broker,
and the YMCA will be sure that whoever buys the building intends to use it to
benefit Tulsa in the future.

They want to continue to be great neighbors in downtown Tulsa. Please let
them know if you have any questions about the new facility. And the grand
opening gets closer, you will receive a Save-the-Date invitation for an open
house to celebrate the new downtown YMCA.

Here’s to a happy and healthy 2009 for all of us!

President’s Letter

Well, we just had a major winter storm come through and everything seems just about back to normal.  I hope people will have taken notice of the way Downtown Tulsa Unlimited crews accomplished sidewalk cleaning during the most recent storm.  Those guys are out there in the bitter cold, the first day the storm hit, and are still cleaning up.  It’s a real tribute to our Field Services Manager, Gerald Turner, and all the guys who do this hard work, especially during the heat of the summer and the cold of the winter.  Hats off to the guys!!

Well, the Drillers Ballpark has broken ground and ONEOK Field will soon be under construction.  The goal is to have the stadium ready for the 2010 season, which will require some luck with the weather and some major construction.  Also the John Hope Franklin Reconciliation Memorial and the redevelopment of Greenwood continue under the watchful eye of the Greenwood Chamber of Commerce and Reuben Gant.  I have seen some of the drawings which Jack Crowley has done for the Greenwood Chamber and they really are quite good.  I understand it will accomplish exactly what the Greenwood Chamber wants.  With the addition of the ballpark, Reconciliation Park, and the Greenwood Center the Greenwood area will really be coming to life.  Also to the west of the Greenwood District, the Brady is going to have some exciting new projects.  The Tulsa Community Foundation is planning a new park between KOTV and the Arts and Humanities Council warehouse where the Atkins Western Art Exhibit will be located.  Some of those projects should be on the way shortly.  You may be wondering why KOTV has delayed its construction.  With the economic downturn it was felt that rebidding some of the elements might produce a lower cost since construction costs have dropped considerably in the last 60-90 days.  They are still committed to building the new station.

Well, that’s about it from my end.  Lots of good things going on Downtown.

Very truly yours,
Jim Norton
President

PAC “Name the Ushers” Contest

The PAC is adding a fresh coat to start the new year, but this time it’s not paint. The Tulsa Performing Arts Center ushers, affectionately known for years as “the yellow jackets,”due to the highly visible color of their uniforms, are changing their apparel after 32 years of wear. No longer will they don bright yellow — a blazer color they could not duplicate (even if they wished to) — but a color that complements the PAC’s new burgundy-colored seats, and everyone’s complexion!

“The ushers themselves were a little weary of the yellow after three decades,” says PAC Director John Scott. “Another change will be that every usher will wear a name tag that identifies them by at least their first name.”

The ushers’ new-coat premiere in Chapman Music Hall will be Oprah Winfrey Presents The Color Purple, which opens on January 20. “Oprah was contacted to see if she would change the name of the show to “Oprah Winfrey Presents The Color Burgundy,” for this special occasion, but politely declined,” Scott said, joking.

Event Services owner Max Fisher, who runs the usher operation that serves the PAC, offered, "I could say we're tickled 'burgundy,' but I'll just say all of our ushering staff is excited and thrilled to be sporting new blazers."

Given that the “yellow jacket” designation will no longer be suitable, the PAC is holding a “Name the Ushers” contest. Winner of the contest will receive a $100 gift certificate, compliments of the PAC’s good neighbor, The Daily Grill, located in the Crowne Plaza Hotel.

Entries should be sent to Name the Ushers, c/o Tulsa Performing Arts Center, 110 E. Second Street, Tulsa, OK 74103, e-mailed to sgaffen@cityoftulsa.org, or posted on the Performing Art Center’s Facebook page. There is no limit to the number of entries that can be submitted. A winner will be chosen and contacted on February 13, 2009.

The usher uniforms are a gift from the Tulsa Performing Arts Center Trust.
