How to record backwards guitar solos. (use this technique for any instrument)

1) if you have an open track on your multitrack tape, it's best to put an audio marker down on that open track to mark where you want the guitar solo to start.. and end. You put a count down and up. Like 4 beats build UP to that point of the solo and 4 beats build DOWN after the start of the solo.

2) ya gotta remove the 4 track tape and flip it over so that it runs in reverse.

3) you start at the end of the song and run the tape and listen to the music. It sounds all backwards. Then you hear your audio cue for the start of the solo and you get a feel for where the solo will start and where it will end.

4) you start your solo in the climax and gradually build down in intensity.

5) ya remove the tape at the end of the song and reverse it again. Now the music runs forward, the guitar solo is backwards and it seems like a real solo because it starts out slow and build up to the climax... because it's been reversed.

Oh... the good old days of tape. Don't get me talking about it. Multi-track tape machines, reel to reels... splicing blocks and razor blades?

It gives me shivers. YUMM! I love that stuff.

- B

ps: Don't forget! When you flip the tape around, track 1 becomes track 4, and track 2 becomes track 3. I mean.... ya don't want to accidentally erase anything do ya?

The Unsubmitted Themes For Hellraiser is a collection of miniature melodies that are as beautiful as they are deadly. Each selection is a life unto itself, and has been treated as such. The songs are actually "characters" in this monumental opus of eternal life and eternal damnation! And Satan and God are the Eternal Soap-Stars of Life and Death! It goes on, day after day, year after year, generation after generation. Like it or not, we're all taking part in this eternal passion play. Which role are you playing? What is your part in the divine soap opera? No matter: Play It Well!

One More Thing: This music is the result of chance and logic. Fed up with endless hours of programming MIDI information in order to create the elusive "perfect" mix, I decided to do something different. I created the MIDI sequenced loops, did one-off mixes by hand (not MIDI) onto a DAT master, and then promptly destroyed the MIDI data so I could never, ever alter it.

The result is HELLRAISER.
I hope you enjoy it!

Recorded August 15the to 23rd, 1994. MIDI and samples recorded direct to DAT. Manual mix through board.

All the music was created with a Roland S-50 sampler and an E-Mu Proteus sound module.
All compositions (c) 1998 Brian Ladd
Published throughout the universe by Ladd-Frith (BMI) All rights reserved

Digitally re-mastered by Andreaz Vogel at Gewalt Am Objekt-Studio.

WE GUARANTEE that absolutely none of this music was ever submitted or considered for the movie HELLRAISER!

My work with Orbitronik and Blackhouse is driven primarily by electronic
rhythms, MIDI timecodes and sampling technology. With gallons of the
grooviest gear spilling off my desktop and the ability to "fix", "correct"
and "perfect" every nuance in my music, is it any wonder that the biggest
mistake I could ever make would be to rely solely on these machines to
create my musical characters? I mean, yeah: I like my gear and my drumbox...
but there's something so incredibly gratifying that happens when I pick up
some drumsticks and just play! It's a feeling of freedom because I don't
have to plug 'em in and I don't have to tune them... much, anyway. It's
instant satisfaction! Forget sequencing too! Gimme my trusty old 4 track
cassette recorder - it's less bother. And while we're at it, let's throw
caution to the wind & dump any preconceived notions about song composition
or lyrics - it's all too pretentious and confining! I'd rather just make it
up as I go.So what do we have here? My drums, my bass, my guitar work and
my voice. That's it. It's all improvised on the spot, and it's all about
having fun - something I forgot about for far too long.

BOSS TRAX: This cut is about the early days of my recording career, and
how easy and fun it was to just goof off and play around with music & tape.
NIGHT SCENE: I cruise the streets and scope out the sights. All I see are
the same people sitting in the same chairs at the same tables at the same
coffeehouses. Why? Apparently the latte is really really fab.
NIGHTMARE ON LADD STREET: I'm a rocker at heart & this is MY street!
ADRENALIN: It gets my heart pumping. A very natural and dangerous drug.
TRIBUTE TO THUNDER: It's my salute to drums & drummers. Drummers rock!
THE KIDS OF TODAY: The members(c) of the Night Scene(tm). I wish they would
actually do something with their lives instead of just being seen. I love
'em & I hope the best for 'em, but I can't help but feel they are treading
water & need inspirational motivation. The same as I did when I was a kid.
SEX TIMES THREE: Good times & fun are important, but ya gotta be safe!
RIOT 1969: A time bomb. The political activism of the hippies was coming
to a close & love was quickly giving way to conformity. Hippies became a
commodity & revolution became the enemy. They tried.... they failed.
GOOD TIMES: It's got a catchy beat & riffs, but no real substance. It's
stupid.... yet... perfect! Disposable & fun. All hail the jerk!
DEATH TRIP 2000: From cradle to grave, from womb to worm - what a trip!
HAVE SOME FUN: My favorite cut! Because.... sometimes all the rhetoric
and "meaning" is just too damn much! Ya gotta get away - ya gotta go go go!
That's what this release is all about: Just giving in & having some fun.
Mistakes and all.... bad takes and gall.... who cares???!!!??? I think it's
important that we all just kick back, relax and have some fun!
That's my life trip.

I hope you enjoy this goofy release as much as I do!
