Garfield Mayor is a new talented artist from the Great Britain, he has potential of going far, just listen to his strong debut "Take and take" and I think you will agree. Garfield jumped aboard the melodic.net cybership and talked about how it was working with Kylie's producer, going out on tour with Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty and a few words about Michael Jackson.

Hello Garfield, did you start the day with a typical English breakfast?
Garfield:
Fraid not... I've just got back from France where I gorged myself every morning on ham, cheese, butter and all things continental - all washed down with a glass of Muscadet of course. So it's back to cereal and wholemeal toast whilst my arteries recover!

Tell us how you got signed to Rob Thomas and Evan Lamberg..s label R Tel records?
Garfield:
The long version of this story is all rather serendipitious, but I don't think you were asking for reams of A4! The short version is as follows:

I had been developing my music with the guys at Caragan Music (www.caragan.com). Two of the guys at Caragan are members of the band Katrina and the Waves (everyone knows Walking on Sunshine right!?!?). Katrina and the Waves have a publishing arrangement with EMI, and on a business trip to New York the guys from Caragan played a CD of artists they represent to one of the senior execs. The senior exec turned out to be Evan Lamberg, who close friend and publisher of Rob Thomas. Evan picked up on my track Invisible which featured on the CD, and asked to hear more. Rob also heard Let Love Be Your Energy and apparently went through the roof. After this we chatted over the phone an eventually met in London, where they mentioned their ideas of setting up a new record label. Ultimately Rob and Evan asked me to be the first guy on RTEL (R.ob T.homas E.van L.amberg) records.

I think your debut album "Take and take" is a warm and sunny pop affair, do you consider your music as a soundtrack for the summer?
Garfield:
Now there's a loaded question! I'm glad you consider it so... There's definitely a consensus that the music I write has and anthemic quality to it, but in my mind theyre more winter anthems rather than summer ones! Melinda Newman wrote of my record: Despondency has seldom sounded so catchy which I think strikes a chord. There's a fair bit of darkness from a lyrical perspective but I do try and temper this with the natural optimism that exists in my life... You need optimism to get on in this game! I have this obsession with the paradox and irony of life so I'm pleased that your angle is perpendicular to mine... Things are rarely as clear cut as wed like them to be... I use my songs to explore the details. What was the question again???

My favorite song is "Future vs history", do you have a personal favorite off your album?
Garfield:
Take and Take was the track that got the undivided attention of Caragan Music... Everything else has stemmed from that so it will always have a special place for me.

Because I produce my own records, there's a long QA process that happens naturally... So anything you hear I like - otherwise you wouldn't be hearing it. After that I'm quite happy to let others decide what should feature etc. Maybe for the 2nd album I'll ask the fans what they think should appear.

What was the first album you ever bought?
Garfield:
Ha Kylie by Kylie... I listened to it a handful of times then went back to what I'd been doing for years beforehand - listening to my Dad's record collection - much cheaper and much more tasteful!

There's a certain irony here though... Mike Spencer whom I asked to mix Take and Take (largely on account of his work with Jamiroquai) produced the hit that re-launched Kylie's career - Spinning Around. To be fair she's had some cracking pop songs since.

So when did you start playing an instrument and which one was it?
Garfield:
I was 14. I went round to a friends house and he was sat tinkling with his Dad's acoustic guitar. I asked him if I could try (upside down of course because I'm left handed) and I was surprised to find out that it wasn't quite as hard as I expected. After that they lent me a beaten up nylon guitar which I re-strung opposite. I'd play for hours on end just for fun... It was never practice!

Most recording artists today work with pro-tools, do you prefer pro-tools over analog recording?
Garfield:
If it weren't for digital recording technology I wouldn't be chatting to you here. Using a PC was precisely how I learned the art of production and at the same time honed my songwriting and arrangement skills, and this ultimately lead to me making the demo for Take and Take...

Though I started on an analogue 4-track, digital technology meant that I could afford to have the mixing desks, processors and effects needed to make proper records - even if these were all in one box! I don't have a massive amount of experience of analogue - but nor do I think I need to.

How do you combine living in U.K when you are signed to a label in the U.S?
Garfield:
Aeroplanes normally. It takes quite a while by sea I believe.

Sorry I'm being facetious... Long-haul flights are never fun but hey there are much worse things to do in life! I get chance to read, write, do my brain-training.

On a more serious note its frustrating: It's easy for me to tour in the UK since I can jump in a car and drive pretty much anywhere - but my record isn't available here so I have nothing to point the listeners towards! Conversely, the vast majority of my fans are in the US - but it's difficult for me to tour there for logistical reasons. It will happen when I've figured out how we support it, and when we do I'll relish it. I've loved every part of the US I've visited so far, and to cross the country will be an fabulous privilege.

Whatever happened to the collaboration with Sony Music, wasn't the album meant to be distributed by Sony BMG?
Garfield:
We were wrapping up my record just as things were starting to shut down in the US... One thing led to another then Sony axed swathes of staff and we lost all traction for my record. I won't lie it's been a tough 12 months from both a spiritual and financial point of view, but ultimately I've come out stronger. Amongst other things we've launched the merchandise store over at Zazzle, redeveloped our myspace page, established some key endorsements, and are about to release a new EP in close association with TheBizmo.com. There are lots of things bubbling under and I'm in control of them all - which is a good thing - if not exhausting! The record industry is changing exponentially and I'm happy to say that I'm on point here.

With the recent passing of Michael Jackson, I must ask you in what way or how his music has affected your songwriting?
Garfield:
I owned Bad and listened to it lots when I was a kid. Dirty Diana - what a track. I can't say I'm a massive fan of the production style in general but it's hard to argue with songwriting and arrangement like that - it cuts through boundaries which is no doubt how hes managed to appeal to the masses. The last few years of his life just seemed a tragic account of the scourge that celebrity can be... And still we chase it. How messed up we are.

When I googled your name, I found Oasis Liam Gallagher's name on several hits, is he a big influence?
Garfield:
Not exactly, but he was a catalyst for me opting for a life in music. I'd been into the guitar for a few years when I saw the video to Cigarettes and Alcohol, where Liam staggers around a dressing room with a bottle of booze in one hand and models under both arms. It was then obvious that you could live a life that paid OK AND was fun - and I hadn't found that anywhere else. I've got the hedonist gene (though I keep it fairly well suppressed these days!), so it was a natural progression I guess.

But as time has gone on it's less and less about the life and more and more about the music, and I think anyone who knows me will testify to my commitment there. It's 15 years since that moment I'm still banging away at it!

I actually prefer Noel's vocal and think his melodies are exceptional. I listened to the first two albums lots when they were released and there can be no underestimating moment they captured for working class Britain during that time.

Are you touring to promote the album?
Garfield:
Yes! We're opening for Rob Thomas when he comes to the UK next year.

As I've already intimated, I'm really keen to tour the US but we have to figure out how to do that without support from Sony... Hopefully RTEL records will find someone else to step into the breach here. Or maybe we'll figure something out independently. My band is still pulling together but we're well on our way and since growing up in the studio, I'm now excited about the stage.

We're also hoping to open The Green Man festival here in the UK - but that relies on some more votes from the fans - so please if can spare a few moments check http://www.thegreenmanfestival.../greenpoll/node/9045

How much time do you spend on the world wide web by connecting with your fans or getting your music out?
Garfield:
An inordinate amount! I don't know how I'd have got to here without the Web... It allows me to chat to fans, advertise music, shows and everthing else, and research potential leads for expansion - all for very little expense! It's absolutely invaluable to me.

I try to respond to everything that's required of me when it comes to fans. I place that as a high priority since they are they ones that are taking this from A to B as much as I am, and they deserve to feel part of it and be proud to be involved just like I am. My fans have helped me through some dark days over the last year and I'm determined to thank them for that the way they deserve.

Check out the track
Take And Take by Garfield Mayor - KOAR's new favorite singer/songwriter. Mayor cites Bob Marley, Paul Simon, The Eagles, Gomez and Pink Floyd as influences. Apparently, the pro writers and musicians are rooted overseas. Garfield Mayor, who hails from Coventry, England is the first artist to sign to R-Tel, a new start up label started by Matchbox Twenty’s Rob Thomas and EMI Publishing Executive Evan Lamberg. In fact, Rob Thomas will tour in support of his upcoming solo record ‘Cradlesong’ this June and touted Garfield Mayor as the opening act. Check out the video for Take and Take !

Garfield's latest blog - please check it out!

Past, Present, Future: Garfield Mayor

res

Garfield Mayor – Vocals, Guitars, Keys, Harmonica, Programming and Production
Wes Finch – Bass Guitar
Ben Haines – Drums/Percussion

1.Past: What is your musical background? What has led you to this point?

Wow… That’s a long story! I’ll paraphrase… When I was 14 I knocked on
the door of a friend. His mum let me in and he was sat in the lounge
playing his dad’s guitar. I asked him if I could try, and I did my best
to copy what he’d been playing – a classical piece which always reminds
me of Mike Oldfields ‘Tubular Bells’. I played it upside down of
course, since I’m a lefty. To my pleasant surprise it wasn’t quite as
hard as I’d anticipated it would be. After this they loaned me a old,
beaten up nylon guitar which I restrung left-handed, and with the help
of ‘The Usborne Guide to the Guitar’, I set about teaching myself.
Fairly soon afterwards I realized that with just a handful of chords I
could play tons of the family’s favourite tracks – like The Eagles’
‘Take it Easy’ and Clapton’s ‘Wonderful Tonight’… That Christmas I got
my own Fender steel strung acoustic, and for my birthday in January, I
begun 18 months of guitar lessons. I had a fab teacher and he
introduced me to delta blues, ragtime, classical, jazz and everything
else you work on the acoustic. He also encouraged me to buy a 4-track
tape recorder and to write my own music, which I did more and more. I
realized that by combining my computer (an Amiga 500+) running
‘Octamed’ and my 4-track recorder, and by bouncing tracks back and
forward I could produce some (relatively!) sophisticated tracks. I
guess that was the beginning of my love affair with digital music
production.

In 1994, I saw the video to Oasis’ “Cigarettes and Alcohol” – y’know
the one where Liam Gallagher is stumbling around his changing room with
models under each arm and a bottle of whiskey in the other. And I
thought “That looks like a good job – that’s what I’ll do!” And ever
since then I’ve wanted to be a professional musician – though I’m not
so concerned about the models now… It really is all about the music
these days!

I caught a break a few years back when some guys I’d been working
with at a UK agency called Caragan Music played my track ‘Invisible’ to
a publisher in New York by the name of Evan Lamberg. Evan turned out to
be best buddies with Rob Thomas (Matchbox 20/Santana), to whom we sent
more songs, and on the strength of these, Rob and Evan asked me if I’d
be the first artist to sign to their new label RTEL Records (Sony BMG).
Since then I’ve been riding the roller-coaster of the music business -
with all it’s highs and lows!
Take and Take

2.Present: Where are you at now in your career? What are you currently working on?

Where am I right now? Everywhere and nowhere it seems! I
currently manage myself so that means from day to day I’m stretched
from one side of my career to the other…
On the musical side I’m preparing the band for a Summer tour. It
would be logical for us to open for Rob Thomas on his forthcoming solo
tour so I’m hoping to bring my band across the waters to pay you guys a
visit… Watch this space!
On the business side I’m talking with a lot of music supervisors,
licensors and publishers. Many in and out of the industry have
commented on the ‘filmic’ quality of my music, so I’m considering the
various different ways this can be exploited.
I’m also working with some great designers developing a clothing range and other merchandise. We’ll be launching these at Zazzle in the coming months. I’m really looking forward to this not least
because it’s a great opportunity for talented designers and artists to
get valuable exposure, and hopefully catch a break somewhere along the
line. If there are any such talents out there they can find out more
about potential opportunities by emailing info@garfieldmayor.com
Oh and we’re just finishing up a ‘behind the scenes’ for the video
to ‘Take and Take’… Director Evan Kaufmann has again come up trumps so
I’m very excited about airing it to the fans.

3.Future: What’s coming up for you? Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Spending more time making music and less time with a
‘business’ hat on I hope! And figuring out how to manage a successful
music career and a family at the same time probably.

4.Where can people find more of your music?

My preferred spot right now is ReverbNation
It’s not a social networking site – it’s a place for real artists
and their fans. The ReverbNation player can run standalone so you can
have it playing in the background whilst you surf. Also by registering
as a fan you get free access to exclusive content like rare and
previously unheard recordings, plus we regularly run Street Team
competitions where you can win CD’s and other merchandise. On top of
all that, the guys at RN are v cool, and are always championing
independent artists and their music.

5.Anything you’d like to plug?

Well, of course I’m always trying to sell my debut album ‘Take
and Take’ which is currently out here at iTunes, at Amazon, here at
Rhapsody plus pretty much every other digital outlet under the sun! So
no MP3 player need be without it ;)
If for whatever reason you can’t buy any of my music right now, make sure you check ReverbNation where you can get plenty stuff for free.
Anything else I’d like to say?

Cheers!
