A bass driven snarling number kicks off the Strangled Helicopter EP, Jackals (by Tactus) embodies everything that is good about dubstep. Dark and unforgiving, changing direction and taking the listener to a whole new level this is a mature sounding track, clearly the production levels have been stepped up lending this a much cleaner sound. You cannot help but get swept away by this track, Jackals captures the mood just right; a big tune in the making.
Track 2 Out of my Depth (by Camphor Haze) is a whirling wall of sound which engages listeners straight away. Upon listening to this I pick up subtle little changes, which I personally find fascinating, a great insight into how the producer is thinking at the time. Out of my Depth grows as a track and you will end up falling in love with this tune for sure.
Like a sledge hammer, Santa Muerte (by The Mighty Cornelius), hits you square between the eyes. The kind of track that makes me sit up and take notice. This is one of my favourites off the EP; a futuristic dubby sound vibrates around your head. A full on track not one for the faint hearted it races along not letting up at any point. It engulfs you and then spits you out.
Track 4 (Home Guider by Tactus) takes no prisoners, it shakes you with both hands pounding and pulsating, intermingled with a sharp, hard thrust of base. It would be interesting to hear this on a full P.A system, as I believe this track has all the potential to blow your head off and leave nothing behind but your size 10’s.
The Black Meat (by The Mighty Cornelius) is a slow seductive number following on from where Home Guider left off. It moves with ease intoxicating senses with the ability to delight listeners, drawing them in and then throwing a curve ball that leaves them stunned.
Drifter (by Camphor Haze) is the final track of the EP; it sticks two fingers up and announces itself aloud and in your face. This is a great way to finish an EP which will leave you wanting more. All in all the tracks successfully compliment each other with the style and dignity you would expect from Abaga.

Tactus – “Riding Horses EP”

01. Steam Cloud

With the ever increasing Dubstep scene in Edinburgh and throughout Scotland it is encouraging to see small indie label, Abaga, establishing itself in Scotland’s capital city. Steam Cloud by Tactus is the first track on ‘The Riding Horses E.P’, a marauding beast with echoes of dubby goodness oozing through. It begins gently, allowing you to get caught up in the sound before it ambushes you with a brooding, dirty baseline. Interwoven with short, sharp electric shocks it conjures up images of a deep and dark subterranean world where you feel compelled to let yourself go.

As a fan of all things dub related, it is pleasing to hear this come through, rather than be a hindrance, it allows the track to flourish. Dubstep as a genre has endless possibilities and it is vital that these boundaries are pushed that little bit further. Steam Cloud uses the foundations already set and evolves its own style, a positive aspect when trying to establish a reputation as a producer and a label. Since writing this, Steam Cloud has received airplay on Vic Galloway’s Radio 1 show, a promising start and hopefully a sign of more good things to come.

02. How Was Your Weekend

Track two from ‘The Riding Horses E.P’ is a club banger keeping the dub vibe well and truly alive. How Was Your Weekend vibrates to the sound of a heavy vocal, with a punchy baseline underpinning this dark number, a track to lose your weekends to – if you forgive the pun. Tactus has managed to step it up, embracing you in a warm, musical cocoon. This needs to be played at full volume, at 3 in the morning, waking your entire neighbourhood. Failing that and not wanting to be evicted from your home. This should be experienced in a club with a good sound system. It is only when you hear this played as it should, will you appreciate what a good track this is.

03. In The Shade

A Rolling wall of sound greets you with this third track off The Riding Horses E.P. Bass is again the key word here, echoes of sound introducing themselves and disappearing again. The ever present dub vibe filters through, backed up with little snippets of high hats. In The Shade ticks all the right boxes, never becoming too predictable. Upon listening to this several times I can even make out what appears to be guitar riffs, giving this a much fuller sound.
