On a Full Moon Night Troops Motivate Rumi to Write...
More troops in Afghanistan means more terrorist attacks
around the world. We will not end
violence by increasing the number of people wielding tanks and guns. If I
believed in grades and criticism then the president would have just gotten an F
on my report card.
Fortunately however, for him and me, I remain motivated by taking equal
responsibility for what’s going on. And as much as 30,000 additional troops in
Afghanistan sounds like a shopping spree of terrorism... I realize too that
it happens the day after a black friday puts white money in zippered pockets
and pink socks are thrown away because the washing machine thankfully wouldn’t
accept bleach.
Translation: There is still hope left in the world because some people still wash
their clothes with their hands.
Now, the only real question left on the trapeze is why
do we continue to fuel the military-industrial complex? Why do we keep
shooting ourselves in the foot... can't our soldiers carry hammers and nails
instead of guns? Can't we build instead of bomb?
That sounds like the beat of an old tune… a drummer that never got her chance
in the sun… it sounds like we’re still waiting for Rumi to come and swing down
from a vine shooting love potions into our ears so that when we read the news
at midnight we’ll know that new history has already begun.
The policy is still the same and those that agree with the contrary are not
able to express their support for fear of assassination… this may be worse than
a poem that is taken to literally and a
night without sleep was all that I needed to really be awake…
and see
the next day, it became clear that there were some things we could live without…
Now… do you know whose side I’m on?
Answer:
Each time you hurt me
I find a way
to compassion
Translation:
I am a bit annoyed with us making the same mistakes over and over again.

Weekly Thought
October 12th, 2009
Columbus set the stage for the slave trade. By honoring him with a holiday this government continues to insult the few indigenous people left living in the U.S. after the slaughter.
History text books say Columbus discovered
America... when they really should read, “Columbus came, exploited, and stole
the land from the people who were happily living here before he arrived
and brought the swine flu with him.”

Health is a Life
Right....
Sequence revolves
Interchange conflict Leads to series
Results
Unfinished experiments
With truth
Strong states, matter
Sequence of efforts
Matter
Changes form
State implants effort
As sequences revolves
Political will
Represents strength
Yet deploys arms into gas
That hardens ideals
Which were liquid and stripped bare
As solid states
That are strong
May need a weak bond to overcome
The corruption of a bank
Damming water and wreckage
Failed policy and evaporation of fish
Control of environment
Strong states of matter
Sequence of efforts
Climate solid
Waste
Open states
And weak now is the bond
That life
Invested
Into political systems
Remain fragile
As feathered birds choke in toxic clouds
Empty plate
Self-organize
Creation of jobs
Empowered citizens
Inspire love
Freedom checks baggage at airport
Building thoughts
That matter
Check mate
Sequence revolves
Effort changes matter
Effort changes what matters
Life invested in bonds
Break and dissolve
Life savings
Public should have an option
For health is a human right
And should not be a matter of
Political dissent
When congress members
Have no one to care
For them When they are sick
Then they will know why we fight
Health is a Right of Life Not only for humans...
Not only a headline
On the six o'clock news.

3,000 Years of Solitude
Everlutionary is a vehicle. A way to communicate. We do not have to live life always concerned about survival… there is something more important than survival… that
to die happy is more important than to live miserably… that as people
die… pass away… move on… to other states… they continue to remain part of something... indefinable.
We often argue over concepts without having shared definitions. Our lives are troubled because of
what we wished… we had said… and what we had said was not exactly what
we meant… and then we live in the past… or dream so heavy into the
future, that the present moment seems to loose it’s wonder and our
fascination with the day to day miracles is obscured and hidden within
our quest to be something different… different than what we are…
At this moment, there seems nothing more important than for us to find
our purpose. Humanity must find a way to rekindle something that has
broken in our species spirit... heal and mend a break that has
separated us from each other.
Everlutionary
doesn’t necessarily have to do with science or religion. Although both
these disciplines create context from which we may better understand
with what we are struggling. Clearly humans affect & are affected
by the environment, but they now have the ability to shape the
environment. At this point in their evolution, they can hence determine
the terms with how they are affected.
I
am affected as I sit here and write. For even more context I am in a
small home in Washington, DC. I must confess, I love solitude... and I
haven't been getting much of it lately. I
don’t know what will come next. Outside in my backyard which measures 6
feet x 12 feet, I have growing Kale, Tomatoes, Mustard Greens, String
Beans, Brussels Sprouts, Beets, Basil, and Squash. Most of them have been taken over by weeds, because I haven't had the time to take care of
what I planted. But I continue to know if I water the plants they will
grow. If I tend to the soil, it will be fertile. I know that control is
a word loaded with inconsistencies… that nothing is either in or out of control… that all control can be often attributed to a calculated risk of randomness and unforeseen circumstances. That everything is subject to change.
I have consistently been cultivating these walls. My days are filled with teaching children at recreation centers, writing & painting in the wee hours of the morning, finishing mixing the last songs to an album, organizing retreats, and members of
the community so we can build an arts-based peace education training
facility/farm outside the city. I have been challenging myself with
reading one novel a month for pleasure. On some days I fall asleep at
the crack of dawn. On other days I wake as
the sun rises & practice Kung Fu for hours. Sometimes I wonder why
every few months I write and send these letters out. What is the
purpose of communication?… beyond just
sharing… and remembering that we all need to take a moment to step back
and reflect upon why we do the things we do.
Perhaps
I want humanity to try something different. I believe humanity can
improve drastically, really… simply by caring about each other… and
this is all dependent upon my relationship with you… and I've slipped
and fallen... been confused by the many faces of love.
I’ve
seen some relationships break. I've been reading about great leaders
being assassinated. I-----as you-----in life have experienced people
who were close to me act in ways that made me mad and angry. As
committed as I am to building a sustainable and peaceful world, there
is always a fundamental hypocrisy. The contradiction finds balance when
the extremely essential yields to the everyday monotony and the
knowledge… we are not alone… you are not alone… I am not alone. I will
end it there. Knowing there will always be time for more solitude… and
more writing about the essential nature of nothingness and growth.

Patience,
I Leave You Today
I remember
waiting For the hand sirens sounded wheels screeched pavement burned Help waited
(to be)
heard
species left the
earth dislocated as water evaporated in some places
over flowed buried more
flesh and bones under dirt we chanced
rebirth a seed in mountains of
dreams creviced in streams of unlimited creativity (waiting for) guidance to lead guidance to lead
us out of frustration… lead us out of apathy…
Guidance to lead... Patience I leave
Patience I leave
you today For the world
will not wait Patience, I
leave you today I will not
permit you to murder an absent minded
staring gang member
who has too much
time (in hand) pulls trigger
finger with shaky palms… masked love in
caged heart tired of not
being seen look at him, now doesn’t know
what to do with, attention.
Patience, I leave you
today For one cannot be
patient and wait as children
starve One cannot sit
and listen as government
representatives bicker spending years
listening to non-profit organizations perfecting a
mission statement that will only be changed, again, one day…
And so patience,
I leave… you shall remain
dry under the warmth of the covers I must walk out
the front door… into the rain I leave you,
today In the shoe
rack… where my
sneakers vacated… today expediency created Quickened
awakening We cannot today
afford to roll out of bed slowly
Patience,
although I see your place I save you for
the day When that woman
is not being raped When children
are not being enlisted into guerrilla armies When oil is not
being spilled (as blood) negligence into
the oceans
I save you for
the day When i do not
kill When lies are
not far and wide When day is not
hijacked by darkness masquerading as political liberation demons in
pushing hypocrisy in the name of democracy and
imperialistic religious beliefs…
Patience, I
leave you today… But I shall
return… to you. When effort has
exhausted my body When my emotions
and mind need rest I shall return to you then. To restore,
rejuvenate, recalibrate… into your arms…
I will sleep…
only to wake. Again, leave you at
home… For today, there is no way to have
patience for injustice,
inequality, militarism, poverty, dishonesty and half-truths.

February 16, 2009...FROM INDIA... I write from India, a magical land of contrasts and possibilities. In my previous essay titled, “Total Disarmament: Walmart Under Attack as Terrorists Siege Mumbai,” I described a need for demilitarization; while reflecting upon the connection between consumerism and terrorism. In November 2008, before terrorists took the lives of more than 150, simultaneously injuring over 300 in Mumbai, I had purchased a ticket to come to India. At that time my intention was to deepen my yoga practice; return to one of the ashrams where I typically find the solitude and space I require to more intimately understand the place where breath meets body. I arrived to the airport on December 31 (New Year's Eve) and immediately began to brush up on my Hindi with the taxi-driver. I hadn't been here for two years, which was a decent excuse for my rustiness. My motivation in returning shifted. The terrorist attacks made solitude seem selfish; instead, I became determined to discover who was organizing in India towards a non-violent response to terrorism. What I discovered was a vast collection of activists, organizers, educators, social workers, and concerned citizens attempting to use their voice to proactively prevent war from occuring with Pakistan. Through many conversations with people living here, I also sensed resentfulness that their government had not retailiated and launched a full-out attack against Pakistan. What I want to take a moment to applaud is the restraint of the Indian government. It has been two and a half months since the attacks upon Mumbai, but they have not resorted to using military force against Pakistan. At the moment, it stands as a great, unsung victory for peace lovers everywhere. India did not follow in the U.S. footsteps by launching their own "War On Terrorism" in Pakistan. What will be pivotal to watch over the next months is an important election in India that undoubtedly will determine the stability, peace, and prosperity of the entire South Asia Region. There is so much to share... for now, however, choose to return to poetic verse. The below is a snap shot of some various pages that have been collecting ink in my journal from the past 2 months... unpolished, bare, and reflecting all the various directions I've been turned while searching for Total Disarmament…live love laugh and give,HwH-------------------------------- Cow Kung Fu written by HAWAH
You can catch him praying to stones… painting small symbols on fabric and weaving together the future with the sweat on his palms. She calls him from a distant village, where electricity is not a necessity but a burden. Where running water through the tap would cause her to become overweight… until sooner or later she would always be found taking the elevator instead of the stairs.
You can find them together… spinning progress by praying to stones… carefully placing them in areas where shade can be found. You can find them… quietly and diligently writing a new story. A story of those who kneel down, surrender and find a way to blend together religion and faith... in a final attempt to circumvent spiritual war.
Here you will find cows doing kung fu, elephants doing yoga, and some of the most poisonous snakes in the world simply wanting to be loved… as those dogs in Mumbai simply wanted to be adored, but instead, would be found fleeing from little boys who would make it a game to pelt them with stones.

In the streets, of India animals often are the trash compactors and garbage disposals… they are fed every evening, what is left over… what food during the day was not sold, the rotting vegetables and mildewed corn.
Plastic bags line the inside of cows' stomachs, as a motivated few fight to have plastic bags banned throughout the world…. they don’t even worship cows… but they are concerned….
Concerned that our idea of health is twisted with sickness; that our need for survival is being confused with thinking we have to live in competition… the places we often inhabit are deadening our reasons for living.
Freedom in this world, is does not mean to bargain the price down (even when you can), but to allow the laborer to retain dignity for their work. Why is it that in some places in the world people respect fixed prices but in others, people don’t?
Our reasons for living are tough to find when we work all the time; especially when the jobs we keep have no significance to what we enjoy. There are people who awake and do the same thing everyday. Lives are enveloped in monotony, boredom is the card we have in our hands, and to shuffle the deck… we sometimes have to leave everything behind… allow it to fall to the ground and scatter as ashes from a cremated body in the wind...

Rarely acting upon the impulses that ahead leave doubt and responsibility… gambling is illegal, unless you are a professional at it; playing Russian roulette with stocks is accepted as business... some of us are trading other secrets… markets are crashing as waves upon sand... many are being forced to drop what was previously thought as important… some are quitting their jobs, yet, how many of us are thanking our boss for firing us? Taking advantage, not of welfare, but of the time to find yourself? In the middle of world-wide recession and stress... we make concession, for there is something more important than what we can earn… our time… we cannot buy back from the universe.
In the middle of power struggles and welfare checks that are not enough, some conscious business women are meeting environmental concerns and are recharging destiny through pondering the tapestry of our interconnectedness.
Facing the enemy of war; how many weapons can we arm ourselves with before our muscles begin to cave in by the weight of meeting terrorists with violent force? Scrambling for a new way to live... carving trees with tattoos.... and sewing peacock feathers onto our clothes… spiritual soldiers are renaming the birds and peering deep into the ocean to see where all the fish have gone. Plastic floats upon the ocean water... it does not sink, so there is still a chance for us to see it... collect and gather what we have forsaken and lost.
Life is pondering itself. They say that in times of great abundance, there exists great philosophical progress... and in times of great stress and strain… hurricanes and earthquakes will take shape and remind us of our impotence.
Within all of this there can exist great spiritual revelation. This is the time to unite world religions. To begin to pray in multiple ways… offer diversity as our ritual and offer without desiring something in return.
Answers to problems are more than just policies and new procedures, new departments and companies… effective organizations need a Movement to live.

Politics without poetry is lifeless. Religion without acceptance is ego driven by false projections of a divine wish to be first. Many try and purchase god through prayer… love through fear… happiness through escapism… but we cannot purchase our souls.
What if we began to count differently? Valued coming in last place first? What if we changed what we counted and got rid of the idea of interest? What if we pulled the greatest from each and every culture and tradition? What if we sat upon crystal buildings which through hollow walls autonomously harvested light rays and rain water? What if we didn't try to go to the moon until life on earth could peacefully coexist? What if we became the source of our resources? Rearranged our priorities so that we wouldn’t need diamonds on our fingers to express or show love? What power and strength could we release… if we really did disarm the world? ### creative commons copyright (2009) by HawaHall rights observed###

Total Disarmament
(Part I) Walmart Under Attack as Terrorists Siege Mumbai written by HAWAH On November 26th, 2008 terrorists laid siege on Mumbai, India. They successfully overtook several public and private buildings, including The Taj Mahal & Oberoi Hotels, Café Leopold, a Railway Station, and a Jewish Cultural Center; they also started shooting at a hospital! Thoroughly executed attacks displayed signs of lengthy preparation and planning; although their lack of a specific target seemed to point to the fact that even the terrorists didn't know what they were shooting at and why. Their motives ambiguous, pundits continue to hypothesize exactly which terrorist group they were taking orders and operating from. Before the terrorist attacks are even over, it is widely being discussed by politicians and news media how to make India more safe and terrorist proof? Answers tend to focus on how to increase security through more military police stationed throughout the city, increased checkpoints, metal detectors, and surveillance by naval ships that would patrol the waters near the coast. As buildings continued to burn in Mumbai, on November 28, 2008, the largest shopping day of the year, "Black Friday," was taking place in the United States. Supposedly it earned this name because it was the day of the year when retailers' books moved out of the red, which traditionally is used by accountants to indicate loss, and into the black, which indicates profit. On this fateful day in Long Island, New York, Walmart shoppers, in their hunger for the cheapest goods, rushed the door at 5 AM just as an employee was trying to unlock it. The shoppers literally took the employee's life from right under their feet. The employee was trampled to death as coworkers trying to rescue him were fitfully shoved and stampeded as well. Black Friday is destined now to take on even more meanings. The title for this essay could have been "Consumerism Kills Again," or "Terrorism Needs Consumerism to Live." The incident illuminates the predator consciousness that consumerism breeds. Through the hording of goods and resources, it quickly causes abundance to vanish and people to act from places of deficit and scarcity. If everyone knew that there would be either enough laptops for everyone to have one or that they could still live a beautiful wonderful life without one, then there wouldn't have been a mad rush for the door, regardless of at what cost. Some could argue the shoppers were actually terrorists. Believe it, they terrorized that unfortunate worker, and also, undoubtedly scared nearly to death some helpless cashiers working at the check-out counters. Others would say they aren't terrorists because there must be a systematic application of coercion, meaning they have a plan to get their way no matter what, even if it means they have to create pain and suffering to others. Terrorists want us to live in—you got it—terror. In either regard, however, terrorists are consumers. They consume and feed off of fear; whether that is the fear others have of them, or a fear that is generated from economic, social, and political systems which assure the rise of some select few over others. An intricate web of consumerism must be unraveled as we strive to present methods of how to deal with terrorism more effectively. The mobilization which killed the Walmart employee may have been motivated by a fear that items on sale would sell out if they didn't hurry. In the process, they ended up acting as predatory animals with a pack mentality, whether intentionally or unintentionally, and killing the Walmart employee. Similarly, we could say that the fear which motivated the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks upon New York, or, the attacks on November 26th in Mumbai is rooted in not being able to participate in the world economy, being neo-colonized, dominated and controlled. In other words, even terrorists are terrorized—deathly scared of not getting what they want. If someone can't afford to buy it, or if it's not something that can be bought, then they may resort to even taking hostages as bargaining chips. During Thanksgiving dinner, it was hard for me to concentrate and not have my mind constantly wandering back to the situation in Mumbai, especially, since I have family and friends who live in what is now the third highest populated city in the world. As I sat comfortably, with football on a wide screen television and desert just moments away, my connection and need to understand the importance of this incident did not sway. What is currently transpiring in India is an unbelievable moment for the world's largest democracy to act in a way that is spiritually advanced and mature. Instead of arming the nation more, what if they did the opposite of what the world community expects and anticipates? The answer does not have to be increased militarization. The answer could be meeting the hatred with love and compassion. The answer could be found by asking why did this happen? What drove them to do this and how do we change those conditions? This is what the U.S. government failed to do in those essential days after September 11th, 2001. Instead of asking, "Why," they asked, "Where are they?" The question was a perfect transition, permitting U.S. military forces to hastily set-off, hunt down and vengefully attempt to kill. The same response could be utilized now, as terrorism strikes the heart of Mumbai; or, it could be the opposite. This is a timely test for the spirituality of India. A history of non-violence has defined Her existence for thousands of years. Climaxing with the policies and code of King Ashoka (270 – 232 BC), who after taking personal responsibility for the slaughter of thousands of people through the greedy expansion of empire boundaries, had an epiphany on the battlefield and decided he would no longer allow innocent people to suffer from the ravages of war. The reign of his empire is defined through his spiritual awakening, and the resulting peace which he brought to all who lived within his territories. His spiritual leadership along with many others has injected non-violence into the DNA of India. Millenniums of spiritual practice, discipline and prayer have brought to us Hinduism, Sikhism, and Buddhism. Her roots are planted in the idea of compassion, nonviolence and acceptance. The moment to test the pulse of Her people is now. The terrorist attacks on Mumbai are a defining moment, and have the opportunity to be, as Obama's election as president of the U.S., a man with a Muslim father from Kenya and a white mother from the Midwestern United States, a powerful symbol and shift of universal human consciousness. If India acts in a way that is congruent with Her history of nonviolence, she could begin to shift the paradigm around the world. She could easily begin to develop new strategies for keeping people safe that are not rooted in increased militarism. She could launch, not a shock and awe military assault, but a non-military tribunal of hearings of truth and reconciliation for people who were aversely affected from the attacks. She could vow to fight back with what M.K. Gandhi called, "Satyagraha (truth-force)." This is how they expelled British Colonialism from the land, or what some Indians refer to as British Terrorism, without lifting a finger to violently fight back. Because of India's history, She is in a unique position to succeed at banishing terrorism without using a gun, tank, or bomb. She could bring out the humanity of those who died and those who killed them. Conversely, as a reaction to the death of the Walmart employee, the U.S. could begin to station military police at Walmart locations on "Black Fridays," and other major shopping holidays. It seems to be the likely reaction for next year's shopping season. But it doesn't have to be the only reaction, and especially wouldn't be if we could find a way back into Pandora's box. What we need today are new ways to deal with terrorism that are non-military responses. Terrorists and shoppers will in many cases do anything to achieve the highest good. They are working towards achieving a goal, and often will not stop at anything until they get it. The shoppers think that buying the newest toy for their child or family member is the highest good. So imbibed with conviction they may even rip the last toy on the shelf out of another child's hands so that they can buy it and give it to their child. Consumerism is synonymous with exploitation. Although not directly seen, someone is exploited so that another can buy goods at cheap market rates. That worker at Walmart was surely exploited. He was exploited by peoples' greed and lack of patience which caused them to not even see him or his reason for being there. Their eyes directed their feet straight to the sales, where they could locate video games, toy guns, t-shirts and camping gear. Their focus on what they were going to buy blinded them to the humanity of the one who was simply trying to open the door and let them in. Let us not make the same mistake again. Let us unite as a world community behind India in these unfortunate times, and encourage Her to consider utilizing old, proven methods and ways to deal with terrorism, as surely the new ways are not working. ..tr> ..tr>..tr>..table>..tr>..tr>..table>..table> ..tr>..table>..table> ..tr> July 25, 2008 Vol 3., Issue I A Day Out Of Time Walking slow takes time Walking fast takes time Which one will you chose?
The Mayan lived in Mesoamerica and thrived for more than 2,000 years. Their calendars and sacred ration 13:20 was used to form the foundation and basis of Dr. Jose Arguelles' pioneering work. He modernized a calendar based upon the cycles of the moon... each moon lasts 28 days, so there are 28 days a month and 13 moons in a calendar year. One day a year is known as... The Day Out Of Time.
The 12 month calendar that the Western world uses is the Gregorian method to tell time; many different cultures and civilizations prior, all had intricate, elaborate and accurate calendars of their own; thousands of years ago there were calendars that depicted the unfolding of our galaxy---today the progress they made with out tools would be considered radical, pioneering, and cutting edge; still, there are more ways to tell time than humans have discovered. An Everlutionary Time Seed
The ancient astronomers had no telescopes, but a patience only life without technology can bring. The stars all have their place in the universe; as you, they rest in pockets gravitating energy. These pockets are responsible for magnetic pulls that cause microcosmic differences in how our cells are arranged… our cells are shifted by their position… at the time of our birth subtleties affect us wrinkles indent our skin memories carve where spoons fit in bowls tattooed on bodies so they could be sewn into blankets and eat the possibility that you were already thought of
For this reason, I never had my palm read or future told. I've been quite mindful to never go to a fortune teller. The lines on my palm, they lead somewhere I'm sure… maybe i'm just not sure if they want to be read? Or, maybe I'm just not interested right now in where they go.
Saving the future for the future; interested thoroughly in what the now has to offer. The now, other than a glass of red wine that sits by my desk as I write, contains the secrets to the future. the past needs a bridge to find them a walk needs motivation to guide it therefore, can independence truly exist? systems that don't need any assistance perpetual performance without refueling?
Can existence persist without any surrounding support? Relationship is it the basis of our survival? Do healthy ecosystems need ancient calendars? Is it possible that in the past humans were slightly more enlightened than they are today? Is blood not more than just red? Are there colors that we still have not seen?

Do colors need more than a paintbrush to sing, a mountain to appreciate the wind thrown onto blank canvases and asked to bend, shift, elongate, curve, dissect.. Competition was in love with cooperation... Yet why were they not allowed to marry in these States... passion runs through an artist… creativity grows from their arms as a plant reaching for the sun... a flat tire on a rusty old road; a car; to fix; more soothing to simply stare; at it. To be bent just right until you're about to break, as a scientist forced to work from a cage new mediums unveil that studying formality is not more important than creatively applying knowledge that addresses people on Wall Street who are artists of the trade; people landscaping homes that paint with lawn mowers and hedge clippers all day; and people who take balls and place them through hoops… that encourages experimenting with creativity... transfixing new combinations and codes.... opening the locks and taking the hinges off the doors.
When we see life in the deceased... it must mean we are staring deeply... unmasking… discarding... removing... scratching into our skin... one word cannot define everything… so can days even exist? The sun rises and sets. The planets glide in spherical motions. The space between days is what we call the nights… to calculate the equation, we must remember that in our struggle for survival… in our struggle to understand sustainability, justice and truth… in our quest to understand our nature... to understand how we grew bodies out of sticks...
how we counted the days; when the months in a year were irrelevant; even when we are not searching for knowledge… we will find it… come back after we thought we had lost it... dropped it... nestled it somewhere between experiences. a lesson that we had to learn over and over again. it's nature was to never stop searching… stop counting the days… I tell myself this… and while writing you say,
"This is how life makes more sense to me… it's like being in class... reading a book... taking notes on calendars... when you have a place to record your thoughts... days seem to melt into each other.
I can only get bits and pieces of the conversation, of what was said, I think to myself, "if you are reading and you don't want to… then hit delete… and if you're hungry, fast until you no longer feel the pain… and if you're empty and feel lonely, walk a few miles in an orphans shoes. What do you want to do… and how do we conclude… words are not just meant to create sentences… and sentences are not just meant to create paragraphs… and paragraphs are not just meant to create chapters… and chapters are not just meant to create books.

..tr> ..tr>..tr>..tr> May 2008 Vol. 2, Issue VI More Than A President I'm going to cut right to the race. The idea of a woman or African-American as president is appealing to me. But if Condolezza Rice was running for president, I'd pass on the best of both worlds. Hilary Clinton's candidacy represents a Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton regime. A hybrid monarchy, rooted in nepotism, that I'd rather not see perpetuate and further tarnish the already scarred history of a nation built on the backs of slaves. Maybe they should have a law stating that presidents should be picked girl---boy---girl---boy---girl---boy? Or, one year the president should be 11 years old and the next year 65 years old? Regardless, Obama stirs a feeling no other candidate has that I remember in my short-time living. I don't agree with all of Obama's views and policies; however, I feel a spark of purpose in his life and timeliness. The fact he has exposure living and growing up in parts of the world, other than the United States, makes him a candidate the world can embrace. The potential of Obama to unite people across not only political lines, but religious divide is unmatched by any of our current presidential candidates. His expressed willingness to dialogue, even with some of the most ostracized world leaders, makes him an individual who could bring increased global security that does not rely upon militaries; fostering understanding and mutual respect through dialogue, humbleness and diplomacy. But Barack Obama is not nearly enough. Inspiring, yes; answer to all of the U.S. and world problems—not so much. A step in the right direction, maybe; but this is about more than just a president. No president alone will be able to save the drowning waters of the polluted sea. McCain, Clinton, and Obama all represent a two-party system that consistently silences diverse perspectives and limits the capacity of those, who are not democrat or republican, to create change. The two-party system that exists in the U.S. precludes the political voice and will of millions of its citizens. There must be a reason, in addition to apathy, that still over 50% of those eligible to vote in the U.S. never make it to the polls.
None of these candidates are speaking about the demilitarization of the world. About the essential need of our careful disposal of the world nuclear weapons stockpile. None of them have addressed how we shall counteract the institutionalized racism that has allowed the number of people in U.S. prisons to climb and reach over 2.3 million. "A Black boy born in 2001 has a 1 in 3 chance of going to prison in his lifetime; about 580,000 Black males are serving sentences in state or federal prison, while fewer than 40,000 Black males earn a bachelor's degree each year; and in 2004, 2,825 children and teens died from firearms in the U.S.---more than the number of American combat deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan through the end of 2006." (America's Cradle to Prison Pipeline 2007 Report, Children's Defense Fund). We are in a civil war right here in the U.S.!
None of them have yet spoken about how we can divert huge global catastrophe by radically shifting energy consumption and consumerism. None of them have addressed how the nation's schools are systematically fueling violence through outdated and irrelevant teaching methods and curriculum. And I am still waiting for the day I hear a presidential candidate, at the end of a speech say, "God Bless the World!" Nonetheless, I hope, and on quiet nights pray, that for every Osama there must be an Obama; a counter weight; a balancing of the scales; the love that hate produced. But, more important than Obama, or whoever the next president of the U.S. turns out to be is YOU. Where is your heart? What are you doing? The danger in a magnetic personality such as Barack Obama as president is that masses will tend to diffuse responsibility to him for making the changes in our society that are so sorely needed. Obama will be inheriting a Royal Bush-mess. The people of the U.S., the ones electing him into office, will set him (or any other candidate) up for failure if we do not transform our penchant for materialism and placing American interests ahead of the Earth's. Out of the current realistic choices available to us, I believe making Obama president is a step in the right direction, but it is not nearly enough. We have to step with him and ahead of him. This is much more than stepping to the voting booth and casting your ballot. That's the simple way out. We can't live our lives behind curtains anymore; casting votes in private. WE have to seriously work everyday to change our communities so that they are healthy, nurturing and positive places for all people, regardless of who the president is. Most importantly, as recently observed, we need to come together as a species, and unite to aid the millions of people who are being displaced and lost through earthquakes, tsunamis, cyclones, hurricanes, tornadoes, volcanoes, and disease. This will require everyone to do something.

The president of the U.S. would play a more passive role in society if citizens were actually doing their jobs and looking out for one another. This election is about much more than just a president, it's about our very hearts and souls. It is not enough to think, 'Okay, I'll do my part and vote this year for who will be our elected representatives.' Instead, we have to become mindful that we vote everyday, perhaps even with greater impact, by where we spend our money. What we buy and which company is producing it. We vote everyday by the seat we choose to give to the stranger on the bus, walking or riding our bicycle instead of taking our car, or, the child that we spend time with and do, or do not love. We vote everyday… simply by opening our mouths. By fearlessly addressing injustice when confronted by it; by laughing, smiling, and spreading joy to others, even those who have caused us pain. The true change, is taking responsibility. Not a representative democracy but a direct engagement and transformation of the system that is rooted in our conscious evolution. Because this is bigger than any president… this is bigger than any of us.
