Album review of CRASH THE SYSTEM - The Crowning in Allaradio.org (in Italian)

Result: 4/5 = 8/10


Nouvo progetto ideato dal duo di polistrumentisti e songwriters scandinavi Daniel Flores (Mind’s Eye) e Soren Kronkvist (Michael Bormann, House Of Lords, CC Rock), accompagnati da un set di vocalist d’eccezione come Goran Edman (Malmsteen, John Norum, Street Talk, Brazen Abbot), Mats Leven (Malmsteen, Treat), Thomas Vickstrom (Brazen Abbot, Candlemass) e Bjorn Jansson (Ride The Sky, Tears Of Anger), praticamente il top del panorama aor di matrice nordica. Cosa aspettarsi dunque se non un concentrato di esplosivo aor/hard rock melodico che riporta direttamente alle atmosfere anni ottanta di bands scandinave quali Treat, Da Vinci, primi Talisman, con un aggiunta di sonorità proprie di Fair Warning, Street Talk e House Of Lords. Niente di eccezionalmente innovativo dunque, ma una lettura personalizza di sonorità melodiche eighties con cori di immediata presa e grandi performance vocali dei quattro singers coinvolti, valorizzati da una produzione pomposa e sempre cristallina. Tredici brani diretti, freschi e convincenti che esaltano le doti vocali del sempre impeccabile Goran Edman, vero maestro e veterano della scena scandinava (“Fight Fire With Fire”, “Love Is In Your Eyes”, “Mysterious” e “Broken Glass” sono autentici manifesti di grandissimo hard melodico di matrice scandinava), e permettono di riscoprire in due brani il talento di Mats Leven, ingiustamente rimasto un po’ in secondo piano negli ultimi anni (sentire i refrains alla Fair Warning e House Of Lords di “All Because Of You” e “Take A Chance” per credere). Molto bene anche le interpretazioni di Thomas Vickstrom (perfetto discepolo di Edman in “I Still Believe In Your Love” e “Higher And Higher”) e Bjorn Jansson (da menzionare “Rolling Stone” e la conclusiva “Without Chances”, ottimo hard rock con richiami a Rainbow e Cornerstone). Da comprare a scatola chiusa e da godere ascolto dopo ascolto, un must per ogni amante di aor e hard rock melodico che si rispetti. Rock The Night!

MOMENTO D’ESTASI: Album qualitativamente elevato ed omogeneo, con una nota particolare per i grandi refrains di “Fight Fire With Fire”, “All Because Of You” e “I Still Believe In Your Love”, interpretate rispettivamente dagli ispirati Edman, Leven e Vickstrom.

Album review of "Crash The System - The Crowning" in Hellcast.com

"Una vez más Frontiers Records, y con esto creo que casi ya se puede adivinar hacia donde apunta este review, este sello Italiano, parece desde hace varios años estar apuntando a un mercado específico, en concreto el rock con tintes más melódicos y bueno CRASH THE SYSTEM no escapa de aquel espectro, un genial proyecto comandado por el sueco, Sören Kronqvist (MICHAEL BORMANN, HOUSE OF LORDS) en guitarra, teclado y bajo y Daniel Flores, batería, teclados y guitarra, para quienes por primera vez escuchan hablar de este último y en sus mentes están diciendo, de seguro que es CHILENO, les comento que están en lo cierto, nacido en Chile en la ciudad de Concepción, pero con ya varios años de "circo" en Suecia, ¿y porque digo esto? Por que su curriculum como baterísta y productor da para hacer varios reviews, entre ello, colaboraciones con el guitarrista CHRIS CATENA, SECRT SPHERE, TEARS OF ANGER y quizás lo más importante, miembro fundador de MIND’S EYE, además de otros álbumes dónde trabaja como productor e ingeniero.

Ahora bien ¿de que trata este "The Crowning"?. Es un puñado de super voces suecas al servicio de las melodías creadas por los dos personajes anteriormente mencionados, ellos son: Goran Edman (YNGWIE MALMSTEEN, STREET TALK, KARMAKANIC, TIME REQUIEM) otra gran voz y también ex-YNGWIE, Mats Leven (KRUX, THERION), el multifacético Thomas Vikstrom (CANDLEMANSS, STORMWIND) y quizás el de menos renombre pero de una garganta privilegiada y muy similar a Jorn Lande en su estilo: Bjorn Jansson, quién grabara aquel tremendo disco aunque poco comentado junto a Uli Kusch de los ya lamentablemente disueltos RIDE THE SKY y el disco "New Protection" además de su banda madre, los ya mencionados TEARS OF ANGER.

Con todo lo anterior, el apetito se abre atomáticamente y lo mejor de todo es que este album cubre toda la expectativa que uno pueda poner, comenzando por que musicalmente es realmente un trabajo sobresaliente y por que cada una de las voces que colabora también hacen un trabajo de excepción, a altura de la circunstancia, la mala noticia es que no hay ningún dueto y son composiciones que se reparten de manera algo desigual los escandinavos vocalistas. Un booklet que incluye un trabajo gráfico y de fotografía que se agradece, además de muy detallado en cuanto a las labores musicales de cada uno de los participantes, hacen de este disco una delicia desde todo punto de vista, incluyendo la presentación.

"Fight Fire With Fire", con Goran Edman en la voz solista da el arranque, con un grito inicial que repite el título de la canción, melódica y potente a la vez, con un Goran Edman muy en su estilo, sonando tremedamente pulcro, en una canción con grandes arreglos de orquesta, un potente y envolvente coro, y guitarras que acompañan de gran manera. La Inconfundible voz de Mats Levén, da paso al medio tiempo "All Because of You" de los más destacable de este disco, con un discreto riff y una vez más con grandes arreglos de teclado y orquesta, destaca por la elegancia que derrocha en un coro que seduce, con Levén a gran altura.

"I Still Believe in Love" con Thomas Vikström, tampoco desentona y sigue la misma línea de las canciones interiores, destacando una vez más los arreglos en teclado por sobre el sonido de la guitarra, buen y pegajoso estribillo más un gran y sencillo solo de guitarra y un trabajo de voz impecable. Bajando las revoluciones de nuevo, se repite una vez más Goran Edman para interpretar "Love is in your Eyes", puro rock AOR de la mejor escuela. Los ritmos más progresivos y pesados los da no otro que Mats Levén en "Take a Chance" de oscura entrada y grandilocuentes arreglos orquestales, que terminan contrastando con estribillo de gran melodía, incluido un muy bien ejecutado solo de teclado, Vikström al relevo una vez más para interpretar una de las canciónes de ritmo más comercial y fácil de recordar, para tararearla inconsientemente "Enough of Your Love", seductora y de sencilla melodía, además de un corto pero cañero y efectivo solo de guitarra.

Goran Edman, suma su canción numero 3 para interpretar una de mis favoritas, "Myterious", dónde la simpleza del rock se hace presente nuevamente, con guitarras muy tenues, un ritmo de bajo penetrante y un piano que se hace muy agradable, corta y efectiva, Thomás Vikstrom da el vamos a "Angel of my Heart", otro de los temas que rescatan las mejores melodías del Hard Rock, dónde Vikstrom se luce con su registro vocal en otro de los puntos altos del disco, con un coro emocionante.

Ya pasada la mitad del disco hace su aparición Björn Jansson para interpretar "Rolling Stone" otro medio tiempo facilón, y donde Björn da un toque diferente con una potente garganta y gran interpretación. Una vez más la garndilocuencia de los teclados se hace presente con "Don..t Tell me no Lies" con Thomas Vikstrom, aunque esta vez con un tema más bien discreto en calidad, pero que levanta y llama la atención por la gran performance vocal, una canción más bien repetitiva, pero que no empaña la calidad general.

Otra de mis favoritas y una vez más interpretado por Goran Edman, puro Rock and Roll y buena vibra es la que reparte "Broken Glass" además de tener una divertida letra y cambios más que interesantes en la melodía, pero siempre con un hilo conductor en todo el disco que es la simpleza de la melodía, con muy buenos arreglos musicales, cosa que también se hace presente en "Higher and Higher", con Tomas Vikstrom sumando su canción numero 5 y cerrando su participación, dónde el buen gusto no se acaba ni los ritmos que pegan y se apoderan de uno a primera escucha.

La guinda de la Torta la pone Bjorn Jansson en otro de los temas que suenan más progresivos y pesados y que dan un toque distintivo y que sirve de contrapeso para no sonar tan repetitivo, "Without Chances" es otra de las piezas maestras de este disco, y la mejor manera de cerrar, menos melódica y dónde las guitarras son más protagónicas además de los ya mencionados muy buenos arreglos de teclado y orquesta, un sentido solo de guitarra, de esos que sin ser virtuosos tocan la fibra, por lo bien puesto de las notas, Bjorn, potente con su "landeneana" voz, para cerrar un disco perfecto para quienes disfrutamos de lo simple de la música pero con arreglos que dan valor agregado, voces privilegiadas y muy bien elegidas y una producción de lujo.

No sé qué pasará en el futuro con CRASH THE SYSTEM, pero han dejado una huella que facilmente se puede instalar dentro de lo mejor dentro de su estilo en este año 2009, un disco que cumple con las espectativas que se puedan crear viendo la lista de talentos que contiene con un álbum que refresca aún más el buen momento del estilo, bien por el sello italiano, que demuestra tener muy buen oido."

Album review of "Crash The System - The Crowning" in RevelationZ Magazine

"Crash the System - The Crowning

　

The very symphonic and immensely tight Crash The System album comes as a pleasant Scandanavian treat. Daniel Flores from Mind's Eye and Sören Kronqvist (songwriter for Michael Bormann and House Of Lords and noted former Finnish 400 meter hurdle champion in 1989) collaborated to create the best AOR disc they could make. Enlisting four well known vocalists, Göran Edman (Yngwie, Street Talk, Brazen Abbot, Glory, etc), Mats Levén (Yngwie, Treat, Therion), Thomas Vikström (Talk of the Town, Candlemass) and Björn Jansson (Ride the Sky, Tears of Anger), who all sound pretty similiar (except for Edman, who is unmistakable to the discerning listener), they forge ahead for "The Crowning".

It is an album of subtle beauty, and blunt knock-your-socks-off candy sweet harmonies drizzled in a modern symphonic AOR sauce that is simply delicious (and very Street Talk futuristic Silver-ish and dash of Frontline for that sound recipe to perfection). All tossed together it is a fine, fine treat that yields a virtual bounty of impressive rock material in that frozen Scandi harmonic manner. Fresh and forward, embracing the past and pushing themselves to the brink of the future, this is an album that was crafted carefully...and it shows.

All songs are not created equal and thus there is a cream to this crop. Leading the way is the fervor of "Fight Fire With Fire" which fires on several cylinders and is the closest thing to a power/prog track. A little lackluster in areas, though standing out from the crowd for its aggressive stance, it is a logical choice for an opener, although it does little to convey the overall tone of the album, since there is nothing else quite this harsh and pure rockin' on the disc. Edman belts this one, and is also the lead for the awesome Street Talk/Frontline inspired "Mysterious". Pumping, swirling keyboards and those luscious vocals that twist words in that delightful quirky manner make this song just pop. A melodic melter of a chorus tops off this great track.

"Broken Glass" is just AOR bliss, in the steps of the very best of Street Talk (also an Edman fronted vehicle, usually) "you make the simplest things so god damn aggravating". All the strange, futuristic keyboards and synth give flair to the fantasy. One of the true killer songs of 2009, and yes it is that good. "Love Is In Your Eyes" is Edman's ballad entry and he just melts the song on the edges and adds a sensitivity to the chorus that it otherwise might have lacked.

"Angel of My Heart" is saccharine mid tempo romance, lead by the higher pitched Thomas, as well as the piano laden anthemic dreamy feel of "Higher and Higher". Neither are particularly that memorable, especially "Angel" as it earns itself a "meh, just another ballad" response. He also gets to show his chops on that crazy catchy ditty, "Enough of Your Lovin'" as it conveys its lovesickness and the fluidity Silverized synth fancy of "I Still Believe In Love". "Don't Tell Me No Lies" offers big keyboards and a slightly darker, straightforward pursuit by Vikstrom.

"Rolling Stone" voiced by Jansson has a slightly deeper and throatier feel and a bluesy bounce. It's a shame that he was given only two tracks here, his voice is rich and smooth like dark chocolate in a velvety mesmerizing Jorn Lande/David Coverdale way. His other track is the grandiose dark finale, the majestic "Without Chances". A little Masterplan flaunting here, where every moment is emotional rich and excellent.

A strangely beautiful dagger plunged through the soul for "Take a Chance", the wound washed clean and healed for the bright chorus, shining its hopeful light down into the hopeless black. Mats' creepy, indulgent vocals hammer out the atmosphere nicely. His only other track is the dramatic "All Because of You". This one embeds into your memory because of the thick guitars warring with the Conception-like strangeness in the synth sounds. Another polished chorus gives it fragrant flavor.

Thirteen tracks, the majority having killer moments, Crash The System is nothing but an astounding success and a fabulous entry into the world of AOR The sound stands out for its unusual synthesizer choices and slick choruses. The only songs that seem to lack some punch are the Thomas Vikström vocalized pieces. For some reason his voice lacks the drama and uniqueness that the other three bring to the table respectively. He sounds like a "for hire" generic Scandi singer, but even a handful of his tracks standout. An album that aspires to greatness and actually manages to find it more often than not. Highly recommended.
