"It was almost a crowd of first time BFA attendees at the venue…it was a crowd of people that heard through promotion the quality of music and felt the passion in the message the MMP and Yvonne were spreading. The ability to reach groups of new crowds and peak interest enough to make them come to a show they have never seen because MMP/Yvonne’s ability to communicate the talent of this group and the promise of a great show. In this industry that statement alone is worth millions! Everyone knows that that is the single most difficult thing for a band to do is to be seen and heard as the talent they are with the over saturated competition that is out there. Yet we all sit here making nothing and LOVING what we do. Because bands like Back From Ashes deserve it."

Back From Ashes self titled 6 song EP is a pretty raunchy mix of powerful riffing and angry vocals with hooks. Hailing from the desert in Phoenix, AZ, this 5 piece band mixes up elements of Pantera, Trivium and Mudvayne and throws in a bit more melody to make it more "user friendly".

THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

Get your pass!

First off I have to give props to this band and their promotions crew for constantly keeping the bands name out there!  This EP is a sneak peak from their upcoming album.  The band has that powerful hard rock sound that just rips into some serious aggression.  With some well written lyrics and hooks will get you singing along after a few listens.  The Ep I received only had 3 tracks…but that is all I needed to what more from these guys.  Back From Ashes, will give you a swift kick in the ass!  Hailing from Arizona you can feel the heat coming off of this band.  Keep an eye out for this one.  Thanks to Metal Music Promotions for hitting us up!

Back From Ashes: This band's sound is a bit of power, progression and solid hard rock that has moments of head banging then head bashing followed by a mellow flow that gives you time to breath. The lyrics are awesome and the vocals are clear making them easy to understand, which in today's market is a BIG plus! Fans will relate to "Back From Ashes" solid heavy sound and clear vocals.

Several sturdy tracks are to be found, including "Misery," "The Suffering Within - which has a mellow start that grabs your attention with killer vocals followed by a heavy powerful beat," and "Welcome To Me".. Highly recommended..

MUEN: HI GUYS AND THANKS SO MUCH FOR TALKING WITH ME……
Jason: How's it going?
Lane: Hey! How are you doing?

MUEN: JASON, YOU AND MIKEY ARE THE ONES WHO FOUNDED THE BAND.
IS THAT CORRECT?
Jason: Yeah... back in 2005.

MUEN: WERE YOU GUYS IN BANDS PRIOR TO THAT?
Jason: Yeah, not together, but we all had been in other bands throughout our lives.

MUEN: WHEN YOU WERE PUTTING THE BAND TOGETHER, DID YOU FIND IT HARD TO FIND PEOPLE JUST AS DEDICATED AS YOU?
Jason: Oh God yes! That is always the hardest. Not necessarily even the dedication factor, but just trying to find people that have the same views and vision as us. We went through quite a few members before we found this current lineup. Thank God we did, because I couldn't be happier now.

MUEN: YOU ARE GETTING READY TO RELEASE A SELF-TITLED EP IN FEBRUARY.

Jason: Yes ma'am!

MUEN: WHAT'S GOING ON WITH THAT? HOW FAR ARE YOU INTO THE RECORDING?
Jason: We actually just wrapped up. The mix is done, and right before this, I was on the phone with our mastering guy. It is getting sent over tonight and we should have it all done by next Monday.

MUEN: DO YOU HAVE A RELEASE DATE YET?
Jason: We do. Actually, we are going to be uploading it to our MySpace when we get it back from master. We won't officially release it for sale until February 7th.

MUEN: WELL, I CAN'T WAIT. I'M VERY EXCITED.

Jason: Yeah, me too.

MUEN: ARE YOU GOING TO HAVE A BIG CD RELEASE PARTY?
Jason: Oh Yeah!

MUEN: FOR THOSE WHO HAVE NEVER HEARD YOUR MUSIC, DESCRIBE IT TO THEM IN YOUR OWN WORDS.

Jason: It's kind of a mix and Lane can tell you this. We basically all come from very diverse backgrounds. I come from more of a blues/rock type background. My father is a musician and I grew up surrounded by that type of music. When I was younger, I found myself starting to listen more to Testament and stuff like that. I really dug it, but it was something I wasn't exposed to until I was 12 or so. So, my background comes from that, where Lane has more of a progressive background. For us, it is hard to kind of describe what we are, because we pride ourselves on being as original as we possibly can. So, with all the backgrounds that we all have what Back From Ashes is now. If we had to categorize it, I would say we are a cross between all those things.

Lane: I come from more of a death metal/dragon metal kind of a thing. Progressive metal like Symphony X and then the death metal side like Cannibal Corpse, Deicide and some more modern things. A lot of us are big fans of Killswitch Engage and bands like that. It's really diverse, I mean, Matt likes Tool. Mikey is more of an eighties guy. Steve is like a Rage Against the Machine guy. Everyone comes together to make one just really diverse project.

MUEN: WOULD YOU PREFER SOMEONE WHO HAS NEVER HEARD YOU BEFORE TO LISTEN TO YOUR CD FIRST OR EXPERIENCE A LIVE SHOW FIRST?
Jason: Honestly, I would say a live show. We work really hard, not to say that other bands don't, but we rehearse four nights a week on top of everything else that we are doing. We put a lot of work into our live performances and it is always a blast. We turn it into a big party and put on a really good show for everybody. I think hearing our CD first versus seeing a live performance are two completely different animals. Our music comes across fine on CD of course, but a live show is a live show. I'd rather see a band live first before I heard their CD personally. We are big on really talking to our fans. We always hang out after our shows. We do signings, giveaways and we will actually have drinks with our fans, because we are no different than they are. I know for us as musicians, it is important to us to humanize what we do. I think some musicians can get a bad wrap and they can come off kind of cocky. When you get to know the musician behind the music, I think it can help that person or group of people relate to what you are doing.

Lane: I agree with Jason. The vibe of the music, the vibe of the environment and all of our fans are just one big family. It's a very good, friendly and comforting vibe. When you see it, you get a feeling of what the music is about and what it brings.

MUEN: JASON, DO YOU WRITE THE LYRICS?
Jason: Yeah, the thing is, I'd say I write about 95% of the lyrics, but with our band, what it boils down to is... it is conglomerate. We all work together. I'll ask the guys in the band, "Hey, this is what I feel when I hear this music. What do you guys feel?" We will discuss it and a lot of my ideas come from the guys in the band surrounding me. They will say, "When I wrote this particular piece of music, I was thinking this." And I will say, "I like that. I can go with that." We try and work together as a whole unit. We don't like to say one person does this or one person does that because really everyone does it.

MUEN: YOU GUYS WRITE THE MUSIC FIRST THEN?
Jason: Yeah.

MUEN: WHAT ARE MOST OF YOUR LYRICS BASED ON? WHAT DO YOU SING ABOUT?
Jason: Well, you know it is kind of all over the place. I like to write about things that happen in everyday life, all the trials and tributes that people go through, the human emotion if you will. I like to write open because I want people to interpret it the way that they feel that it can relate to them. Sometimes when you get too specific in any type of lyric, you kind of lose some people because they feel like they cannot relate at all. For us, we just really try to keep our ideas, not generic or too big, but to a point where they can listen to it and say, "They wrote that about my life." I know that for us, that is what appeals to us as musicians, too. When I hear a song and think they know exactly what I was thinking. It could be something completely different that they wrote about, but all that matters to me is that I can relate to it. So, we try and take that same approach. Some of the things we write about are personal, but we don't try to get too political and we are not real big on throwing F-bombs all over the place just to try and make an impact. We really try to write from the heart and about things that people can relate to.

MUEN: WHICH SONG THAT YOU HAVE WRITTEN MEANS THE MOST TO YOU, BECAUSE IT WAS EITHER WRITTEN ABOUT A REALLY PERSONAL EVENT OR SOMETHING THAT REALLY INSPIRED YOU.

Lane: Mine was "The Suffering Within," because that was the first song we wrote when I joined the band. I had just gone through a rough time in my life. When Jason said 95% probably like 2% of that, I wrote one part of that song which is the part that I sing live. It really relates to me a lot and I had gone through a really bad portion with a girl and that whole big story. For me, since the lyrics are so ambiguous, I was able to relate that to me. What I really like is we give Jason input and he takes it. Most of the things I can relate to and then Mikey relates to it on a different note. That one is mine. I don't know about the rest of the guys.

MUEN: I LOVE THAT SONG. IT'S AMAZING.

Jason: Awesome, yeah, that is a good song for all of us I think. I relate to it as well, but for different reasons than Lane does. I'd say that lyrically one of my favorites would be one that is on our upcoming release and it is called "Misery." That song for me, when I wrote that, was more gearing toward trying to become something in this industry. The music industry is so difficult and hard. I'm not here to whine or cry about it, but we have worked really hard. I have worked really hard all my life; music has been a part of me since I was a little guy. This song really is about wanting to break out and share it with the world and getting frustrated that you are not getting that world recognition that you want. For me, that song is the one that hits it for me, and when they listen to the lyrics, all of the lyrics will be included on the CD, I think people will understand where I'm coming from.

MUEN: I CAN'T WAIT TO HEAR IT.
HOW MANY SONGS ARE YOU RECORDING FOR THE EP?
Jason: We have recorded six songs for the EP. We were supposed to do seven, but we went a little over budget on the recording, so we had to stop short.

MUEN: ARE YOU WORKING ON A FULL LENGTH ALBUM?
Jason: Oh yeah, absolutely. Right now, we have a full length freshman album called Broken. We decided to move on from that album and take a different approach, and we went with a producer on this route. What a difference... what an experience. We worked with Ryan Greene of Crush Recording, and I'm not sure if you are familiar with his work, but he was like chief engineer for BMI/Sony for eight years. He worked with artist upon artist - everybody from Desmond Child, Megadeth, to No FX, Patti LaBelle and Gladys Knight. So, he has a really diverse background, but he was really well known for his work with the punk scene. We decided that we wanted to do something a little bit different on this album and we looked around and found Ryan. He listened to our music and said, "You have something here." We really liked his attitude and the fact that he actually believed in us. So we went with that and he has turned out some stuff that we didn't know we had in us. So in answer to your original question, yes, we are working on a full length album and we will be going back to him to finish that up.

MUEN: NOW, RECENTLY YOU TOOK ON A FIFTH MEMBER, A GUITAR PLAYER.
HOW IS THAT WORKING OUT AND HAS IT MADE A DIFFERENCE FOR YOU?
Lane: Awesome and yes, especially from the instrument side. I know it has also made a difference on Jason vocally because I'm sure he has plenty of ideas. From working with this guy and being a string instrument player myself, it has expanded our writing horizons so much, because there is only so much that one guitar player can do, even though Mikey is the machine of a musician that he is. Matt is just one of the most amazing musicians I have ever worked with. Having another musician there to throw in his own ideas and be able to add that much more of a diverse approach to what we are doing. To be able to have something behind something and on top of something and to have two guitar parts, has made a huge difference on the writing part of it. It's just amazing, it's one of the best things we have ever done I think.

Jason: Yeah, I would agree with that. When we were throwing around the idea, at first, we were a little gun shy about having another member, because it has just been the four of us. You get really comfortable. It's your family and now you are adopting somebody. You are like, "Am I going to get the red-headed stepchild from Hell?" It's tough because you have to garner that relationship with them, get to know them and hope to God it works out and you don't have to fire them in a month. We got really lucky with Matt. Not only is he talented, but he is a great guy. We all see the same vision and we are all on the same page. It's been a mass improvement and we always told ourselves the only way we would add another member, whether it was someone hitting a cowbell or whatever, if that person had something to add. We thought we were doing just fine as a four piece, but we are always looking to improve. He brought that to us. You will hear a lot of his work on this upcoming album that is quite a bit different from our last one. We are crossing our fingers.

MUEN: HAVE YOU HAD ANY INTEREST FROM LABELS?
Jason: We do have some interest from some labels, but I never believe anything until I see that paper. We have done some shows out in L.A. and had some people come look at us. There are some talks going on, but it doesn't mean anything until (I don't want to say "fat lady" because that is not politically correct) until that larger person sings. We are definitely shopping and are open to anybody coming to us for sure.

MUEN: HAVE YOU GUYS DONE ANY TOURING?
Jason: We travel around quite a bit mainly on the West Coast. We haven't done anything on the East Coast yet. We are self-funded so it is always difficult to come up with the money to get that stuff done. We do what we can; we hit L.A., San Diego, all of Arizona and places like that. So far, so good. We keep getting asked back, but they need to pay us a little more. I'm tired of eating Ramen.

MUEN: WELL, I WANTED TO SAY CONGRATULATIONS. THAT'S PRETTY COOL THAT YOU GUYS ARE NOW SPONSORED BY JACKSON GUITARS.
HOW DID THAT COME ABOUT?
Lane: That was one of the best things that has ever happened to us for sure. The playability makes a huge difference. We went from other instruments and now all of us are on Jacksons. Jackson is currently working on a six string for me, and they have never made one of those before, so we would really like to thank them for that. They are really taking great care of us.

Jason: Absolutely, the cool thing about that is, I'm excited and I'm a singer so I don't get an endorsement from Jackson. I need to talk them into making some microphones or something. It is so cool for Lane, Matt and Mike to have that type of endorsement. Jackson doesn't just hand them out; obviously, if you look at their roster, we are talking some big players. It is so cool and so flattering that I get to sing with the guys that have this endorsement. They are basically getting compared to all these great artists. Jackson felt they were good enough to put our name on their website and give us smoking deals. Our overall sound has improved with the instrumentation that we have obtained from Jackson. It has made our live shows have a much bigger sound. Now, our guys have a little bit better instruments. It's very flattering.

MUEN: I'M VERY EXCITED FOR YOU ABOUT THAT. IT'S JUST GREAT.
JASON, AT WHAT POINT DID YOU REALIZE YOU HAD AN AMAZING VOICE AND WANTED TO SING IN A BAND?
Lane: (Laughing) Are you really asking him this right now?
Jason: (Laughing) Sorry man, I just choked. Honestly, I don't think I do, but I appreciate that.

Lane: I think you do J.

Jason: Well, thanks Lane... a little bonding moment there. To be honest with you, I'm not really a huge fan of my own voice, but I hear a lot of singers are like that. I'm always trying to get better, better and better. I look at other singers like Geoff Tate (of Queensryche) and guys like that. Now those guys are singers. I have a million miles to go before I can even think of being that good. I started singing when I was 12 and I was in a death metal band, which is really funny when you are going through puberty. It's just not as brutal as you think it would be, but then I got into rock and some other odd things here and there. When we started Back from Ashes, Mikey and I sat down and really tried to work on each one of our strengths. When we finally completed the band, we really capitalized on all of that. Mikey kind of brought out the voice in me.

Lane: Everybody in the band loves his mouth. It's hot.

MUEN: WHO ARE SOME OF THE BANDS THAT YOU GUYS ARE LISTENING TO THESE DAYS?
Jason: Killswitch, Sevendust. Honestly, the list is so big. There are so many talented musicians out there, especially on the national level. We are so diverse in what we listen to, it can range anywhere from the new Tesla to the new Killswitch.

Lane: That's a tough one; all of us are so different. I really like Hanson.

MUEN: I SAW THAT ON SOMEONES PAGE.

Jason: Yeah that was mine.

Lane: I actually did one of the girls from Hanson. Did you say Tesla? Tesla is awesome.

MUEN: IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE FUTURE OF MUSIC? WHAT DIRECTION DO YOU THINK THE MUSIC INDUSTRY IS GOING?
Lane: You know, being a guy that listens to extreme metal, I'm noticing it more and more. It is just crazy how talented these young musicians are nowadays. I think it is getting way more and more extreme. More bands are breaking in at odd time, signatures and things like that. I think it is going to continue. I felt like it topped out five years ago with the amount of playing that they can do. Some of these bands nowadays are just taking the playing and the music to the next level. There are bands like Protest the Hero that are just going over the top with the playing. I mean, don't try to headbang to some of those songs. It's just not going to happen. If you ever heard of the band Beneath the Massacre, I don't even know what's going on, but they are all doing it together.

Jason: It's true. Everybody is stepping it up and I think they have to. It's one of those things where you can't just look pretty anymore. Back in the 80's, the closer you looked to being a girl the better your chances were of getting huge. Nowadays, with the state of the industry, it's tough. There's all kinds of stuff going on right now, especially with the downloading and things like that. It makes it that much harder on us underground guys. It's hard to say where the state of the industry is going to go, because it really depends on the underground scene and how much support they are going to get versus what the major labels will do for the underground scene. Major labels historically have had a real problem trying to adapt to what's new. It's a real tough question. If I had a crystal ball, I'm sure I could tell you more.

MUEN: DO YOU THINK BANDS HAVE TO WORK TWICE AS HARD NOW TO GET THEIR MUSIC HEARD?
Lane: Oh yeah! The music industry has really split a lot. There are a million different genres that people are into nowadays.

Jason: Here's the other thing, on the flip side of that, Internet has made it a lot easier for bands to be heard. I think on a major scale though, without that big money machine behind bands, it is a lot tougher to get your music out to as many people as you used to be able to. Things are a lot more niched than they used to be. What is mainstream anymore? I really don't know. It is tough to try and label anything these days. Short of being on American Idol, not everybody is going to know who you are.

MUEN: SO WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR 2009?
Jason: Well, I think Lane is working on a sex change operation right?

MUEN: RIGHT. I SAW THAT ON HIS PAGE.

Lane: You guys knew about that?
Jason: Yeah, we blogged it man.

MUEN: EXACTLY, IT'S IN EVERYONES BLOG.

Lane: Yeah, I'm finally going to be a man.

Jason: What we are really focusing on in 2009 is branding ourselves. We did really well with our first album. We charted 5 in the U.S. and 6 in Canada right behind Ozzy Osbourne as an unsigned band, which is so killer. We got tons of reviews on our CD and we were waiting for that bad one and it never came. We got real lucky and it gave us that forward momentum for 2009. We want to play at as many places as we possibly can and knock on as many doors as we can and basically force feed our music to everybody.
(Laughing)

MUEN: I DON'T THINK YOU'LL HAVE TO THOUGH BECAUSE YOUR MUSIC IS REALLY GOOD.

Jason: Thank you.

MUEN: I WAS READING ON YOUR PAGE THAT YOU GUYS WILL BE AT THE 2009 NAMM SHOW. I WILL BE THERE ALSO SO I'M SURE I'LL SEE YOU.
HAVE YOU BEEN BEFORE?
Jason: Steve (drummer) and myself went last year. This year, we are all going. That's a trip.

MUEN: WILL YOU BE AT THE JACKSON BOOTH?
Lane: To be honest with you, we are going to be spending a little bit of time at the Jackson booth hanging out a bit. The rest of the time we will be by ourselves hanging out and talking to people.

Jason: I know I am really looking forward to the after parties. You can meet a lot of cool people and a lot of my idols were there. They are really cool people and they actually sit down and talk with you. It's going to be cool to mingle with those guys and hang out and have a good time. We are definitely looking forward to it.

MUEN: IT HAS BEEN A REAL PLEASURE TALKING WITH YOU BOTH.
IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WANT TO ADD OR SAY?
Lane: Thank you. We love you guys. Every single one of you.

Jason: Yeah, I just wanted to make sure that everyone knows that we are all huge, huge fans of our fans. Without them, none of this can be what it is. We get so much support and it is pretty crazy. More than we ever expected and we just want to make sure that they continue to have faith in us. We want to thank them all personally. Some bands seem to forget that without there fans, they are nobody. We are so incredibly grateful to them.
Keep on coming by and check out our MySpace page by going to BackfromAshes. com.
We always have updates and giveaways. Check out the contest that is on there. You can win an autographed guitar.

MUEN: I WANT TO THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SPENDING SOME TIME WITH ME TODAY.
