The District Weekly Reviews WE DIED:

"It’s hard to say the Valley Arena’s sound has matured per se, because we’re not talking about Afro-Latin solo projects or laid-back middle-age blues records, and we’re certainly not talking about one of those records where ex-heavy hitters go pop. Maybe “focused” is better. It’s different at least. If you’re a longtime fan, the beginning of We Died might disorient you at first: Reverb-soaked guitar strums a noteless count off before opener “The Dig” disarms you with high on the neck, homesick chords backed by what sounds like a drum machine (but isn’t).

Think of “The Dig”—restrained and gorgeous as it is—like a brief introduction to a new chapter in the Valley Arena’s life. This way, the fuller, more aggressive “Grayscale” carries just that much more of an impact. It doesn’t hearken back to Valley Arena’s harsh atonal heavy days but instead finds a happy medium between pop and noise, with Warren Woodward’s piercing distorted bass acting as the complement to Chris Stevens’ shimmering and ornate guitar.

Later on, “Bait and Switch” is relentless, filling every possible space with perfectly synchronized unending sound, while never managing to sound busy—just precise. Overall, you get the sense that Valley Arena’s members are getting happier and happier in their own skin with each album. They’ve traded in schizophrenic Dischord punk for a more—I’m saying it again now—focused writing style with a refined sense of composition. It’s equal parts Boris and Sonic Youth heaviness made expertly by people who obviously know their record collections, but don’t flaunt it in your face. Talent like this isn’t taught—it’s born."

So we're in the studio as we speak recording our third full length with Mr. Jason Cupp once again. It's been a long time as a band and we're really excited to be making this album right now. It's got a pretty different sound than our previous two and we can't wait for everyone to hear it. I'll post more as we continue recording. Expect the record to be available sometime around May/June.

So just wanted to let you all know what is going on in the world of the Valley Arena this year. We're working on record number 3 and we're pretty excited. We'll be recording some demos in the next few weeks and we might just post a song or two for you folks to listen to. This will be our first record as a three piece and definitely going to be a different sound than our last two records. So keep your ears open and have a happy 2009!

We're back on tour again as of today (Hello Mesa, AZ! How you doin?). We're going to be out for much of March and April and sweet times are surely in store:

March: Midwest Solo dates, some great shows at SXSW and a nice bit o' touring with THE PHOTO ATLAS and 1090 CLUB.

April: Taking our friends WE VERSUS THE SHARK up the West Coast including shows with MIKE WATT, BAD DUDES and THE DEATH SET.

As far as news... we got MEGA famous since you last heard from us. Look for nice features on us in Alternative Press (as one of the "100 Bands You Need to Know") and CMJ Magazine this month. I think we might also finally be getting around to making a music video for the new record, with the amazing ROBOSHOBO who did our last video as well as about a million other videos that will blow your mind in all directions.

In other ROCK AND ROLL news: I just got done packing all of my "tour snacks" into individual ziplock bags to preserve freshness. Nothing says reckless abandon like freeze dried vegetables and soy jerky.
