Right, with my Mates, at Olissipo Eletrico, we're trying to put together this new sound.... we do not want to use computers - probably because we do not know how to use them very well - so we're stuck with our old analogue sounds: B3, Rhodes, percussions, bass or double bass and voice.. this makes things difficult. besides there's only 8 diatonic notes, a little bit more if you use the chromatic scale, but that's not a lot. Fortunately, there are more rhytms combinations, so it helps a bit.

Thanks Gilles... where would I be without you! Last night at the casino in Lisboa, you saved my life! After the devastating performance of Roy Ayers, I was close to throwing in the towel and leave show biz for ever. I was guted! the shear genius of the ol' master did me in... I could not believe that six people could deliver such a relentless groove, diabolical harmonies and effective melodies..... and they are not young! Please, call the Police... have them arrested! How can we let loose such a gang of dangerous old Men, perverting young ears. These kids should be watching Hulk Hogan on MTV, not listen to real musicians, using real instruments... THIS SHOULD BE A THING OF THE PAST!!!!

But let me think Gilles... ain't you too an acompice of this dangerous posse? Ain't you, under the guise of a kind and anassuming vinyl spinner, also a member of this digusting conspiration. And what is this Brownwood business? Are you, in any way, trying to stear kids away from their Nintendo DS.. are you in any way trying to get them to think? Did I hear a hint of Jazz, improvisation in your playing.... Shame on you! shame, shame, shame on you... (if you can't dance too)...

Peace,

Guida

Today I decided I was gonna score big time... no, not what you think! Just reward myself with bonus points. If I do not reward myself, who will?

When I woke up, just by walking in the kitchen and switching the coffe machine I gave myself 50 points. Good start! I knew it was going to be a great day. I then moved on quickly to checking my emails, that was another 50 points. Easy.. It was like playing Pacman in my flat. Bathroom, 100 bonus, walk the dog: weewee = 10 points, number two : 50 points. Heehaaaa! Came noon, I was exhausted... Unpack a chinese soup and prepare a quick snack, and in no time, without me realising i was at 500 points. A well earmned nap gave me another 10 points without doing nothing. Then, when the guys arrived to rehearse, went full blast into scoring a shitload of points, the meter went wild! 200 points.. I was ontop of the world. We wrote two new songs, that was another two points... easy! I then watched Oprah... I deserved 1 point! I almost could not make it... I felt the stress, then end of tghe day was coming... I knew i could make it. A last effeort. Did a washing machine, prepared dinner... I could see the end of the day i had to rsuh around, one more dog walk, I was three points away from making it, the clock was running, suspense, was I gonna make it... a last effort. Wrote this piece, 2 points...reply to myspace friends 1 point, yeahhhhhhhhhh. I've done it again. I'M DA CHAMP!

Roots Rare Groove

Jazzinho, which could be translated as "Sweet Little Jazz", is a luscious blend of Rare Groove rhythms and World Music arrangements, incorporating Portuguese and Brazilian traditional instruments, African percussions, R&B background vocals with soulful and organic Bossa melodies. It is mainly in Portuguese, but some of the lyrics are in English as well.

Led by virtuoso vocalist, songwriter and composer Guida de Palma, Jazzinho, records and performs a repertoire of original material in her idiosyncratic style. Guida is an exceptionally creative vocalist and a master at getting the audience involved. Gigs usually end with a high octane groove with the audience singing and dancing.

Discography

A new album - Atlas - released on Adrian Gibson..s label Freestyle and produced in London by Ed Motta is out now. Alongside Jazzinho, the list of special guests features seventies legends like vocalist guitarist Hamish Stuart of Average White Band fame, analogue keyboard wizard Max Middleton from the Jeff Beck Band and Free Jazz flugelhorn veteran Harry Beckett. The first EP features a remix by Nicola Conte. This new opus, recorded at Fortress Studio exclusively on vintage equipment and instruments, mixes sounds from the Portuguese speaking world with 70s rare groove.
Released in 2003 and produced in London the debut album had tracks remixed by Phil Asher, Sleepwalker and Gerd4Lux to name a few. It sold somewhere in the region of 20 000 copies and is still going strong.

Jazzinho..s music is distributed globally either exported or licensed in various territories including Japan, China, Korea, USA, Canada, Australasia, EU etc.. In Portugal Jazzinho..s Atlas will be released on January 29th via Universal.

Live

Jazzinho has performed on the world..s most prestigious stages like Joe..s Pub in New York, Underground in Chicago, Montreal Jazz Fest, as well as at The Jazz Café, the Barbican, the ICA, Cargo, in London, or La Paloma in Roma to name a few.

Live line up is:

Guida de Palma: Vocalist and band leader. (biography below)
Simon Collam: Fender Rhodes, Clavinet, Hammond Organ
Marcello Andrade: Flutes, Guitar, Violin.
Nic France: Drums.
Matteus Nova: Bass.
Anselmo Neto: Percussions, Bandolim.

Who is Guida de Palma?

Portuguese born, and classically trained Guida de Palma was only sixteen when bass legend and fallen angel Jaco Pastorius hopped on stage to join her during her very first gigs in Paris. Blessed by this almost divine collaboration, Guida went on singing her way onto various stages across Europe.

With her crew of Latin Funketeers, she played support to prestigious performers ranging from Cab Calloway, Defunkt and Gilberto Gil. At Juan-les-Pins' Jazz festival, things even got out of hand when the support band joined Hermeto Pascoal's gang in a musical stroll across the small French town. Freshly arrived in the UK, and alongside prestigious names like Tina Turner, Terence Trent d'Arby, Lala Hathaway and Chaka Khan, Guida featured in the BEF's "Music of quality and distinction". She also joined Californian sax player Ronnie Laws for his European tour, culminating in Montreux Jazz Festival's rapturous closing night. Also involved in production, Guida, a certified sound engineer, assisted legendary producer Juni Morrison of P Funk and Ohio Players fame in recording tracks with George Clinton. After working with Dodge City Production, DJ Dorfmeister, Dzihan & Kamien, DJ Disciple and Boyz from Brazil, Guida has evolved from a pure live performance mindset to one of club culture.

Besides her commitment to Jazzinho, Guida also sings in other bands like Da Lata. She is also the featured vocalist on numerous other albums e.g: Nathan Haynes, Kyoto Jazz Massive etc...

Thank you!

Recording the album felt so good! The fusion of different styles reflects totally who I am. From writing and rehearsing in my living room, to the live recording sessions, it was all pure bliss. I love my musicians, their artistry and personality; so thank you from the bottom of my heart to Marcelo Andrade – I love writing with you- , Matheus Nova, Anselmo Netto , Nic France, Dudu Marques and Graham Harvey. Thank you very much for sticking with Jazzinho during difficult times. The same goes to my husband Stephane; this is our other "baby"… "Merci" for your vision, perseverance and those business brains. Love ya… I would also like to thank my daughter, Iris. You are my inspiration and I love you.

A very special "Obrigada" to Ed Motta. For me you are up there with Stevie Wonder, Arif Mardin and Pierre Boulez. Working with you was an honour and an inspiration.

A giant "Domo Arigato" to Shota Inaba – the Bossa Sensei - and his colleagues at Rip Curl in Japan. Without you guys, this album would simply not exist. Very special thanks to Westbury Music and  Felix Hines in particular for helping fund the project. Mega thank you to Adrian Gibson, Danny Ryan, John Sheppard and Jonas Altman at Freestyle, let's conquer the world together! Also, thank you very much to the PRS Foundation for being the first funding body to help Jazzinho; you guys rock!

A big thank you also to Aguinaldo Tavares for his invaluable contribution, it wouldn't sound the same without you.  Recording in London meant that wonderful guests such as Hamish Stuart, Jim Mullen, Max Middleton and Harry Beckett could bring an Albion flavour to the project.

Thanks to Marc Bassey on trombone and Graham Flowers on trumpet, as well as to Ben Davis and the Basquiat strings – i.e. Rick Coster, Emma Smith and Sam Burstin.

Obviously it wouldn't have been such a smooth ride if my mother, Dorina, hadn't left my father alone to fend for himself, and came to help and cook for the band. Yes, we believe inspiration comes quicker with the help of good food and great cheeses and wines (provided by our world class sommelier Ed Motta).

Thanx to Edna Lopes for the beautiful person she is, for sketching and filming the project as well as her great artwork. Grazie mille to Margherita Scassa for the photos on this album and the ones on the previous one!

Thanx to Father. Love you lots.

A massive thank you to the Fortress Studios team led by the very amenable Shaun Harvey and to the world most focused, hard working and friendliest sound engineer Tom Morris. Thank you as well to Gareth Parton, Ben Woods, Baulty, the two French chefs and super cool staff at the Vestry. The vibe was amazing. We'll be back… A very special thanks to Tim who survived the pressure and Bruin at Rollover Studios for the early sessions.

Let's not forget the guys in Rio: Alex de Souza for lending his valuable vintage mixing equipment and Mario Leo, the sound engineer, for working very hard for not a lot of dinheiro. Thank you also to Ricardo Garcia and Sergio Chataigner at Magic master. Above all, thank you to Jackson Bezerra, who worked his magic at making the Brazilian thing happen.

Thank you to Alan Brown, Gilles Peterson, Rafe Gomez, Shirley Maldonado Deborah Rath and her colleagues at CD101, Jazzvan de Lima, Joaquim Mota and Rui Pintado for spreading the Jazzinho vibe.

I hope you'll enjoy this musical journey. It was cooked with most love, care and affection.
