To Whom It May Concern: Chelsea Girls
Metal female group brings back debauchery of Sunset Strip

To Whom It May Concern: THE CHELSEA GIRLS

The Chelsea Girls claim to be the first ever female all-star Supercovergroup, but I just think they rock. There’s a special part of my heart reserved for girls that love Cinderella and grew up watching Headbanger’s Ball, wishing Riki Rachtman would just go away so I could watch more Pantera, Def Leppard, Bulletboys and Guns N’ Roses videos — and they are such people. Their shows are famously raucous affairs, and highlighted with frequent celebrity and metal-inspired cameos by everyone from Lemmy Kilmeister from Motorhead to Stephen Pearcy from RATT to Taylor Dayne and Macy Gray and Carmen Electra to Quiet Riot’s Rudy Sarzo. It’s not high art, no, but it is one helluva good excuse to polish off some bourbon and let loose for a night. If you ever go see hair metal cover bands in your hometown (eg Steel Panther in LA) then you would love to see the Chelsea Girls do their thing. Guitarist Allison Robertson is a founding member of The Donnas, drummer Samantha Maloney has played in Hole, Motley Crue, Eagles Of Death Metal and Peaches, bassist Corey Parks founded Nashville Pussy and singer Tuesdae is an opera-trained former Playboy model. What more credentials do you need? Read their To Whom It May Concern Q&A after the Jump to hear what makes the girls tick (Pssst – it may have something to do with Aston Martin Lagondas, Whitesnake, and photos of your wiener)…

If you’re in Vegas, catch the Chelsea Girls live TOMORROW at Wasted Space (November 12th) or in LA at The Roxy on November 21. (If you’re an LA reader, send us an email with your favorite hair metal song of all time and the best 2 answers will get you on the list +1 for their November 21st Roxy show.)

Allow me to introduce myself, I’m…

Allison Robertson (guitar): Allison Robertson the III
Tuesdae (vox): Tuesdae. JJ Tuesdae when I’m drunk.
Samantha Maloney (drums): Samantha Maloney, Hot Damn Sweet Sam

You can find me…
AR: In Los Angeles, California
T: Downtown LA tearin’ up the gutter and keepin’ the bums awake.
SM: In Los Angeles, California

I’m usually posted up at…
AR: My apartment, rehearsal, or a Mexican restaurant.
T: My roof top drinking heavily.
SM: Sushi Spots along Ventura Blvd in The Valley

I pay my bills by…
AR: Playing guitar
T: Singing for Chelsea Girls and DJ’ing for sluts and guidos all over the world.
SM: Playing Drums, Remixing and Producing Records, Acting

You might’ve heard of me because…
AR: I am relatively funny and have a great body.
T: I’ve got a four-octave range and a sassy attitude.
SM: I’m one of the few Native New Yorkers who doesn’t whine about (and actually loves living in) LA

But why you really should know me is…
Tuesdae: I like it weird.

My next order of business is…
AR: I play guitar in Chelsea Girls, The Donnas and have been on the cover of Guitar Player magazine. I’m currently playing several residencies with Chelsea Girls, starting the writing process on a new Donnas album as well as a top secret dance rock project with my sister Emily Robertson.
T: writing a rock musical called “Victory: The Rock Opera” with Angus Clark of The Trans Siberian Orchestra.
SM: I’m a pretty Bad Ass Drummer In a Pretty and Bad Ass band called CHELSEA GIRLS

If it wasn’t for _______ I wouldn’t be where I am today.
AR: Tom Keifer of Cinderella
T: If it wasn’t for being born I wouldn’t be where I am today.
SM: Hard Work, Talent, Perseverance and years watching and studying the MTV show Headbanger’s Ball.

The best part about my job is…
AR: I play guitar all the time.
T: Doing what I love.
SM: I get to beat the crap outta something and get paid for it

The worst part about my job is…
AR: I constantly need more guitars.
T: Free drugs.
SM: Nothing

If you want to put a smile on my face, you probably want to…
AR: Give me pizza, talk about metal, Charles Grodin.
T: Send me photos of your penis.
SM: Buy me Entemann’s chocolate fudge cake or take me on a rollercoaster ride

ChelseaGirls4

If you want to wipe that smile away, then you should…
AR: Talk loudly when I have a hangover.
T: Eat garlic and talk about politics.
SM: Lie. I can’t stand a liar. Or a thief.

The last time I saw the sun come up I was…
AR: A week ago when had to spend the night at the Milwaukee airport.
T: Today. Still haven’t slept.
SM: In Vegas last week

The person I admire most is…
AR: Stevie Nicks and Tom Keifer
T: Ayn Rand.
SM: My Boyfriend

The last time I lied was because…
AR: I didn’t want to go to jury duty.
T: The last time I lied was two days ago because it wasn’t big enough.
SM: I dont lie. I am brutally honest. To a fault.

If you hit shuffle on my iPod you might be shocked to find…
AR: Steely Dan, Tchaikovsky, Merciful Fate
T: That I don’t actually own an ipod.
SM: Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite

If you hit shuffle on my iPod I’d be embarrassed if it landed on…
AR: I’m never embarrassed of anything in my iPod!
T: Nothing because I don’t have one.
SM: I am proud of all my iPod songs.   FYI: I am the biggest Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam fan.

When I get my next (first?) really big check, I’m gonna go score a…
AR: Car that has air conditioning and a cat harness
T: A Brazilian pool boy.
SM: 1984 Aston Martin Lagonda

But it’ll never replace…
AR: My Les Pauls.
T: Oh yes it will!
SM: Jaguar XJR because I am a huge Whitesnake fan and can’t stop paying homage to Tawny Kitaen and David Coverdale

I’d like to give a quick shout-out to…
AR: The other Chelsea Girls, what up?
T: All the metal heads. You fire me up.
SM: All the bands I have loved and played drums in… Shift, Hole, Motley Crue, Eagles Of Death Metal, Peaches, The Crystal Method, Chelsea Girls

And lastly, if you were Lost In a Supermarket, we’d find you in the…
AR: Mexican imports or produce aisle
T: buying gum cuz I don’t eat.
SM: Red  Wine Section trying to figure out what  proper bottle “hip” wine enthusiasts and aficionados are buying these days so I don’t embarrass myself at that next dinner party I so don’t wanna go to.

Sundown on Sunset: The Chelsea Girls

Monday, October 12, 2009 – Music by Sean Patrick, West Hollywood

West Hollywood, California (Monday, October 12, 2009) - Chelsea Girls appeared at the Roxy on West Hollywood’s Sunset Strip in September with a sexy, sultry and highly energetic show as well, and though not every act needs such an elaborate and choreographed production, these ladies added a ton of value to that ticket price.

September on the Sunset Strip was historic; the second annual Sunset Strip Music Festival marked the first time Sunset Boulevard on the Strip was closed for music with the blessing of the neighbors, business owners, and the city of West Hollywood. That was a milestone in itself.

The festival became a confluence of music styles, genres, and generations. The early days of the rise of the popular music scene, were remembered both with the people who were there at the beginning, and the new styles and bands of now.

New bands played old favorites, established bands played new songs, and we all formed a human chain of ears that stretched from the 1960’s to the twenty first century.

Music is about songs, lyrics, and how they are played. The music industry has changed with the advent of the internet (witness that you’re reading an online newspaper), and delivery of purchased music doesn’t so much involve a shrink-wrapped album, or even a photo anymore.

In fact, the word “album” has lost some of its meaning when you consider that music is, more and more, collected one song at a time, downloaded and stored in a pocket that used to hold only a comb.

One thing has not changed, however, and shouldn’t: the live show. The vast majority of revenue created for an artist these days involves the tour, and the audience.

The parallels to the SSMF to me are brought to life again in a band like the Chelsea Girls, who played the Roxy on the Strip in September.

As detached as the listening public seems to be as regards buying records, we will always have the live show, and that will continue to be the one true way to feel a song, and see what no album cover could ever relay.

The parallels to the SSMF to me are brought to life again in a band like the Chelsea Girls, who played the Roxy on the Strip in September.

I watched the curtain come up through a thick fog and dazzling lighting, on four women who know what a show is for.

Great songs? Yes. Great musicianship? Of course. You need that to start with, and can’t get away without it.

The Chelsea Girls had a sexy, sultry and highly energetic show as well, and though not every act needs such an elaborate and choreographed production, these ladies added a ton of value to that ticket price.

It was almost cosmic to me that I saw them on the tails of the SSMF, and on the Strip. This band brings the high-energy and million selling songs of the metal years during the 1970’s and 1980’s to a new audience.

Every song, from the opener Holy Diver, by Dio, to Motley Crue's Live Wire was a bridge between the original band, the song, and the flavor of now.

I suppose we all have our own feelings about getting older, but in music I laugh inside every time the radio plays an artist who’s covering a song I heard as a kid.

The chuckle comes because I imagine that a young person listening is hearing the song for the first time, and probably comes away thinking that it’s the only version, and it’s new.

Any kid in that audience at the Roxy, unfamiliar with the songs played that night, would have come away with the same feeling. I’ll even go a step further: the arrangements and the choices of songs could well have slipped into someone’s ears, someone who bought the original albums, undetected as covers. It was that fun.

The Chelsea Girls are a sexy blending of cover band and original act, and they break ground in more than one way.

Founding member Corey Parks, on bass, has been instrumental the costume design.

She’s wielded her needle designing clothes for everyone from Steven Tyler to Sheryl Crow. She helped provide a look on stage that blended a vampire-goth look with a classic rock leather feel, and it worked.

As a front-person, Tuesdae knows how to work a party. She’s been a Playboy model, Manhattan socialite, and is a world-class DJ. With her operatic roots, she hits every gravely note with dexterity and precision, while getting down and dirty in one song, and flying high with Heart on the next.

Allison Robertson was immediately recognizable as a founding member of the Donnas, and her unique blend of hard rock and pop sounds takes the Chelsea Girls from decade to decade without a bump.

Setting back on the stage, drummer Samantha Maloney kicked out the beat with experience from, among others, Motley Crue and Hole. No wonder this band can make it work like they do; they are real parts of both worlds from the 70’s to now.

These ladies not only bring a newness to the rock they play, but the set design and the lighting are well thought out, and the show would have been almost as fun without any sound. Corey and Tuesdae played off each other with a hot familiarity, and even the wind on Samantha’s hair added it’s own light show.

The audience was a blend of cultures, sexes, and ages, as well: Younger people, those in their 30’s, same-sex couples and straight. I saw cowboy boots, tattoos and piercings.

The Chelsea Girls played Dio, Metallica, Judas Priest, Pat Benatar, Heart, Motorhead, and Joan Jet, and while there was homage, the unique sound sprang across the stage, intermingled, and danced with the visual.

They made an intricately balanced and thought-out act look fun and easy. They took their love for the songs they played and poured hard work into those instruments.

The Chelsea Girls will become familiar to you, starting with opening for Motorhead at the House of Blues in October.

They’re now LA based, and working up a tour of larger and larger venues.

They’ve got the skill and the look to play you your favorites without missing the original bands, and that’s saying something.

You’ll be seeing a lot of the Chelsea Girls; make sure you get in line early.

Chelsea Girls Playing the Best Songs They Never Wrote

Posted by Christy Buena Sunday, October 11, 2009

Combine four musically talented blond bombshells performing the best rock songs and you've got the Chelsea Girls, a Los Angeles cover band that is lighting up the Hollywood scene. The Chelsea Girls deliver powerful vocals, wailing guitar riffs accompanied by intense bass lines and heart pounding drum beats. These ladies play hard with their sexy stage swagger and their ability to replicate some of the hardest rock songs performed by legendary bands including Motley Crue, AC/DC, Dio and Metallica, to name a few.

It’s no surprise these women dominate the stage given their talented backgrounds. The band consists of drummer Sam Maloney, whose performed with Peaches, Motley Crue and Hole, guitarist Allison Robertson of the Donnas, bassist Corey Parks - formerly in Nashville Pussy and vocalist Tuesdae, a world famous DJ and former Playboy model.

Opening for Motorhead at Club Nokia, the Chelsea Girls impressed a predominantly male audience as they opened their set with “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap” by AC/DC. Fans sang along and pumped fists into their air as Tuesdae belted out lyrics using her opera trained vocals. The next song performed by the Chelsea Girls was a testosterone anthem by Judas Priest titled, “You’ve Got Another Thing Coming,” where Robertson rocked her guitar solo and Tuesdae crawled onstage seductively. After the band’s Judas Priest cover, concert goers clapped and whistled and as soon as the intro to Danzig ’s “Mother” played, fans cheered in excitement. During the band’s next cover, Blaine Cartwright joined the band onstage to perform, Mountain’s “Mississippi Queen.” One of the highlights of the show was when the Chelsea Girls performed Dio’s “Holy Driver” and brought a sword onstage, reminiscent of the original music video. Next on the set list was Metallica’s “Master of Puppets” where Robertson and Parks nailed the introduction causing newfound fans to shout and cheer. Closing up their performance, the Chelsea Girls went out with a band as they performed Motley Crue’s “Live Wire” where Parks and Tuesdae gave male fans something to think about: Tuesdae licking Parks’ bass strings.

Watch one concert and you’ll witness why the foursome leaves audience members in amazement. Unlike other cover bands that exude cheesiness reminiscent of drunken Karaoke sessions, these four lovely ladies are far from the cliché delivering hair flipping action, in your face anthems and sex appeal. Between songs, male audience members profess their undying love (and lust) to the ladies by yelling, Marry me!” and “You’re fucking hot.”

We sat down with the Chelsea Girls after their performance for an interview. Here’s some footage:

To follow along, we've included the interview transcript:

Disarray Mag: We're here with the Chelsea Girls at Club Nokia. Ok, so how did you guys get together?

AR: Well, we uh, actually haven't known each other that long. We kind of knew each other through different bands and never played together before.

SM: We just started dating recently. [laughs]

AR: But it all kinda came together really easily. Even though, you know, you'd think how do you meet other people in bands. Because I think I would have known – or you’d think we would have been good friends all our lives because I knew Corey a long time ago and you know, we all met through different things but we actually only just met really like hardcore, like last year.

SM: But we know each other through the music community, L.A. We all live in L.A.

CP: We’ve only been in bed together like eight or nine months. [laughs]

Tuesdae: And we already rule the world. It happened really fast.

SM: Now what do we do? We don’t know.

AR: And Corey just wanted to start an all girl group that was fun, and you know that was kinda like a high profile, really good cover band – not just like a crappy cover band but something was actually serious with serious musicians and all female.

SM: So, she couldn’t find it so, then this is what happened [laughs]

Tuesdae: She’s stuck with us now.

Disarray Mag: So, I was watching some of your Youtube videos and how did you get Carmen Electra to be your emcee?

Tuesdae: She’s friends with Corey.

AR: Yeah, she’s really good friends with Corey.

Corey: Yeah, she’s awesome. She’s great and she loves Rock N’ Roll and she loves Rock N’ Roll women! So she was stoked and when she saw us, she literally … I said come down, Allison and I are in this band. I got a call like 3 o’clock in the morning when I got home from the show and she goes, “That is the greatest thing I’ve ever seen and I will slit my wrists on stage for you, I will dance for you, I’ll do anything. We haven’t asked her to go quite that far just yet.

Tuesdae: But, we will. I want to see her riding a pink pony.

Disarray Mag: What are some of your favorite songs to perform onstage?

AR: I like doing “Holy Diver.”

Tuesdae: Right now “Holy Diver” is my favorite.

Corey: It’s always the new songs. “Live Wire”

Tuesdae: “Master of Puppets” and “Think About You” by Guns N’ Roses. “Crazy On You” by Hart is probably vocally my favorite to sing.

Disarray Mag: Ok, how do you pick your songs? How do you decide?

Tuesdae: We fight actually. Cat fights. Whoever wins, whoever pulls the most hair out.

Corey: We always end up in our bras and panties every sing time!

Tuesdae: I know! It’s crazy.

SM: Pillow fights. [laughs] No, it’s hard. We actually want to pick the greatest cover songs that people want to hear. So, we fight about it a little bit because I might like a KISS song from the 80s and Corey might like a KISS song from the 70s. So, you know, we do rock scissors paper or stuff like that. That’s how it happens.
Corey: Or somebody will want to do a song, and another person will want to do a song. Ok, I’ll learn your song and then you’ll learn my song.

AR: Nobody let’s me pick anything. [laughter]

SM: She’s like the Kirk Hammet of the band. [laughs] Everything I pick gets declined. [laughs]

AR: I’m still pushing for a Def Leopard.

SM: I want to do a Def Leopard too.

Tuesdae: We like to pick songs that are difficult that people love. You know, we don’t do anything too easy. It has to be kind of complicated.

Corey: It’s hard too. You know, I grew up in Orange County so there’s a lot of OC punk rock. Like Circle Jerks, Black Flag…

Tuesdae: We love punk. It’s just not challenging enough [laughter]

Corey: There’s a lot to choose from. I mean if you think about the music that moves you, there’s a lot to choose from. I mean, it’s 12 songs and you really gotta make the mark.

Disarray Mag: So what are some of your goals as a band?

Tuesdae: To be the biggest cover band in the world. Guys, just in we are officially the biggest cover band in the world.

Corey: We want to play for the prince of Dubai , at a private party,

Tuesdae: We want to do Bar Mitzvahs, we want to play the Macy’s Passport, Oh! We already played the Macy’s Passport.

Corey: We want to play on the Eiffel Tower .

SM: No, we’d like to open up for our heroes. Metallica…

Tuesdae: I would love to.

Corey: ZZ Top

SM: Axle Rose…Maybe Axle Rose will fire the rest of his band and we’ll be the next Guns N’ Roses.

Tuesdae: And I’m going to push him down the stairs and take over. That’s my plan.

Corey: Could you just imagine that? She pushes him down and she looks just like him, she’s got her hair red, cornrows.

Tuesdae: You know where you are? You’re in the jungle baby and you’re going down…

Disarray Mag: OK, last question. Are there any plans for you guys to create your own songs in the future?

Tuesdae: Money, will make us do that. [laughter]

AR: No, we don’t have any plans to do anything original right now.

Tuesdae: We’re already playing the best songs ever written right or the best songs we’ve never written?

SM: And that’s the point. We’re already playing the best songs we never wrote so how could we top that? You know, it’s really difficult.

Tuesdae: MONEY. Money will top that.

SM: Unless we get the biggest record deal in the world, we will not be writing our own songs.

Tuesdae: It has to be the biggest. Ever.

SM: Like $2 billion. Until then, we will just stick to the other hits.

Tuesdae: I’m saying a Trillion. [laughs]

Corey: With everything in the music right now, you’re going to see that everything is going back to grass roots, live shows, that’s what it’s about period. And that’s what we work on – the live show, entertaining people and providing a night for them. Amidst all the bullshit, go out, they can pay their $15 and walk out wanting to fuck or fight . Like, that was the best thing I’ve ever seen. I had the time of my life. That’s what we want to create.

SM: We want to make it a recession proof band so that kids will know that they’re getting the best bang for their buck.

Disarray Mag: Alright, thank you!

Motörhead: Q&A with the Legendary Lemmy Kilmister

By David Tobin

Motörhead

(l to r) Phil Campbell, Lemmy Kilmster and Mikkey Dee of Motörhead

Whether or not it’s the scope of the land or the years of tradition, there’s something pleasingly different about bands that come from the UK . The novelty is a factor, but look at the impact and longevity of American bands versus the guys across the pond.

To help shed some light on the issue, I got on the phone with English singer/bassist Lemmy Kilmister of Motörhead. Klimster formed Motörhead in 1975 and has put out over 19 studio albums, giving way to 20 hit singles.

So you’ve got another tour going?

Yeah, with the Reverend Horton Heat, Nashville Pussy and the Chelsea Girls.

Great lineup. Not like the other bands on tour out there right now.

We’re better. Ha! We are. We rank over any manufactured band. They don’t work for it. They last a year and then break up – get all wasted on dope and fall apart.

They aren’t in it for the right reasons?

It ends up being the worst time of their lives. They aren’t physically able to do it.

They don’t write about the same things that you do, either.

I write a lot about war. It’s always going on, so there’s always something to write about. And justice. Don’t send these kids off to war. Send Dick Cheney out there with a fuckin’ sword. Fight your own battles.

So, does that mean we’ll see some pyro on stage with you to hit the point home?

Hell no. Pyro takes away from bands. What you get with us is the real thing.

The Chelsea Girls are an amazing cover band. Will they be doing any original songs this time out?

Yes, they are an excellent group. You have Tuesdae on vocals, Corey Parks from Nashville Pussy on bass, Allison [Robertson] from the Donnas on guitar and Samantha [Maloney] on drums. And ya know the Beatles were a cover band when they started out. Play the songs that inspire you.

Do you think Americans are less inspired than Brits?

Ha! Well, in America they just put it out. They don’t support it. One big push, and that’s it. Europeans are more cynical. We don’t just jump into something new and shiny. It’s a longer haul when you promote an album, so you better be inspired. We’ve been doing our way of life for over 2,000 years, you guys have only been a country for 200. We need them to prove it to us. That’s why there’s so few of us, but we last.

What do you think of the Internet?

The Internet is the greatest communication gift that is misused. People haven’t realized how to properly use it yet and really get paid. It’s just starting. These bands need to wake up and take advantage of this thing before it’s gone. It won’t last like this forever. When I started out you had to use the label. Now you don’t need shit.

Wonder what that will do to ticket prices?

There are a lot of greedy people out there. The ticket prices are insane. The bands are greedy, too. I don’t need much. We go out, play our music and have a good time.

Fri. Oct. 9 -- Motorhead: The Delphic oracle has been quoted as observing that Lemmy rocks. And his bass made the jumpabilly of The Reverend Horton Heat drive a lot harder when I saw him sit in with them at the Wiltern a year and a half ago on a bill that also featured the ever-drinkable filth & roll of Nashville Pussy (pictured). All three bands sweat tonight. And opening are Chelsea Girls, who include big blond bassist Corey Parks, formerly of N. Pussy; Samantha Maloney, drummer of Hole (and quite strong in Motley Crue for a minute); Allison Robertson of the Donnas; and opera/rock singer Tuesdae. Huh. At Club Nokia, 800 W. Olympic Blvd., downtown 90015; 7:30pm; $33; www.ticketmaster.com.

1010SAT: THE ROUNDUP

Time to strap ‘em on again. Down and Derby returns to Beauty Bar tonight with DJs Mike Attack, Supra and SHR3D keeping it both funky and fly. As always, rental skates are available and free cocktails are on the floor from 10 to 11 p.m. Because if there’s one thing that improves the hilarity quotient of trying to stay upright on wheels, it’s free hooch.
