The LAVA Collective has put together a group show of predominantly North American origin, focusing on street art and urban culture. Big names like Shepard Fairey, Swoon, Dalek and Skullphone vie for attention with an exciting selection of emerging artists.

The stars of the show are Brooklyn duo Peru Ana Ana Peru, who have been invited over especially to install a site-specific montage of their work. This couple have made a name for themselves in NYC with their vibrant and distinctive street pieces but they also produce video, sculpture, and fine art. They have got a big solo show coming up at the Brooklynite Gallery NYC before heading over here to oversee their first appearance in a London show.

Cityscape will also showcase the photography of Ricky Powell. The man they call the ‘Fourth Beastie Boy’ was on hand to witness the birth of hip hop culture in NYC. For this show he has submitted a selection of his classic portraits, including Run DMC, KRS One, Easy E, Eric B and Rakim. These extraordinary photos depict iconic musicians in intimate surroundings; Easy E is tuning a radio, Jam master Jay is all smiles at the airport. This is a rare opportunity to see Powell’s work in London.

The opening party is on November 5th from 6pm - 9:30pm. Original artwork and prints will be available at reasonable prices, and to sweeten the deal, free Crooks & Castles T-shirts will be given away with the first ten purchases. As well as complimentary drinks, we'll be handing out goodie bags in collaboration with our sponsors Frank 151 and  Big Up magazine.

This will be followed by an after party at the Princess Alice pub, 42-44 Commercial Street. LAVA Collective have invited dubstep luminaries Loefah, Mala and Pokes to provide the soundtrack for the night. To get free entry to the after party, just go along to the art show and put your name on the list. Capacity is limited so get there early.

Shepard FaireyIssue No. 0051
Shepard Fairey is arguably the most famous artist of the Arkitip alumni group, and could quite possibly be the artist most remembered of his generation. We celebrate Shepard's methods not only because they are beautiful and effective but also because he took on the mainstream art establishment and after 20 long years, he seems to be winning.
His recent rise to popularity punctuated by his support of the Obama Presidential campaign has made Shepard Fairey a household name. His iconic portrait of Barack Obama has come to symbolize the historic campaign of the first African American to be elected President and now that image graces the National Portrait Gallery at the Smithsonian. He's an artist who stands by what he believes in and has done more to communicate his causes to the masses than most of his contemporaries, which is admirable on any level. His campaigns have done more to shape the public consciousness than any other artist because you don't have go to a gallery to see his work, its ubiquity is well established.
This issue will be truly historic, as we celebrate 20 Years of Shepard's seminal 'Obey' campaign. Because Shepard has not been a guest of Arkitip magazine since issue edition No. 0003, this reunion collaboration has been long overdue and is a guaranteed to be another groundbreaking Arkitip classic.

THE FUNKY WORM MIX

PODCAST 7

Skipple

Skipple was born in Adelaide, South Australia but moved to the UK with his family when
he was 11 years old. When he landed in London, the jungle scene was at the height of its
power and provided Skipple with an introduction to the sounds of the UK underground.
Ever since, he has followed London bass music through Garage, Dubstep and most
recently, UK Funky.

When garage arrived, Skipple fell in love with the music of Karl ‘Tuff Enuff’ Brown, Ramsey
& Fen, MJ Cole and Wookie. He would record pirate radio sets and listen to them in class
with the headphones hidden up his sleeve. He started working in a record shop at 15,
determined to earn enough money for his first set of decks.  As Garage got darker at the
turn of the millennium, Skipple got stuck into the likes of El-B, Zed Bias and later, the off
kilter Dubstep of Mala and Kode9. Today all these sounds, in combination with his early
love of jazz, soul, funk and hip-hop, inform his incendiary DJ sets that are notoriously
100% pure grooves and positive vibrations.

Skipple currently works for Paul Rose’s Hotflush label and can be heard doing his Super
Skipple thing on Sub.FM every other Saturday at 5-7pm GMT.
