Thirty-six seconds.
That’s all the time you need.
Because that’s all the time it takes before the first chorus kicks in, before something happens inside of you. That’s all the time it takes before you know that something amazing is coming from these four unassuming kids from small-town Tennessee.
Because thirty-six seconds is all it takes to get to the payoff on “When I’m Gone,” the first single from Mike’s Pawn Shop.
In these breif moments, they will surround you with booming 808’s and pulsating beats, visceral keys and fierce riffs, unstoppable melodies and unmerciful hooks.. In seconds they will transform your atmosphere into a rock n’ roll dance party the likes of which you have rarely heard.
And this is all just from visiting their Myspace page. No wonder they have been added to dates on Lollapalooza while still in their infant stages as an outfit. And if you ask front man/lyricist/resident mastermind Mike Woods, he will tell you this has been a long time coming:
“This whole thing has been brewing for about twelve years, ever since I was a kidhanging out at this pawn shop in Lebanon, Tennessee while my Dad was at work. I used to spend all kind of time in that joint, talking to local musicians, learning to play various instruments--from keyboards to guitars, meeting all kinds of strange people who were in the music industry, and finding ways to get my hands on gear. I used to experiment a ton with recording around that time, too. I used to make home recordings at age twelve, using anything I could get my hands on around the house...old tape recorders, etc. The name, I guess, is just an extension of the formative years when I was learning how to hone my mad scientist skills, which I have been doing ever since.”
If you ask Mike, he will tell you the band is influenced by Gangster rap. Then he will tell you he wants to, “Become as big of a star as Michael Jackson and play in a dirty Alternative rock band like Green Day.” But Mike’s Pawn shop sounds like none of the above, yes has the persona to match them all. The band has the attitude of gangsta, the danceability of MJ, and the alt-rock power of Green Day. The net result is a pseudo new-wave pop-rock outfit that is sure to be a hit with the current crop of kiddies, complete with a high-profile front man who is of the rarest breed in music today. Woods is a true musician’s musician, producer, and star-powered personality who is committed to his craft.
“I feel llike I was created to do exactly what I am doing. Whether or not I sell one record or a million records, this is where my gifts are and this was what I was created to do, and no matter what I am going to pursue this thing in one form or another because it is my passion.”
This passion is already translating into the live performance. While some outfits struggle through their formative years to find an identity as a live unit, Woods and company have skipped many-a-grade in their rock education. Open jaws and enamored expressions abound as the band exudes confidence and charisma from stage. It’s not hard to imagine a scene of bouncing bodies in the very near future as the band continues to storm the land.
They have already shared the stage with some industry stalwarts, lending an impressive early resume to their buzz--Shiny Toy Guns, Snoopdog, Hurt, Saving Abel, Flyleaf, Gavin Rossdale, Hoobastank, 311, The Offspring, and Souljah Boy. Perhaps the most noteworthy asterisk to this list is the diverse cross-section of sonics and appeal. Mike's Pawn shop has commercial songwriting and sensibility that sits very comfortably in the realm of pop music; though they are a rock outfit, they are of the special breed that are much more universal than your average guitar-bass and drum outfit.
Yet, it would seem that the band’s goals are a bit more lofty than just writing a couple radio hits. Perhaps that is why, when you pay attention to Woods, he will convince you he has something a bit more tangible than the other flashes in the pop pan: “We have a long way to go but we've come a long way in the first four months. In the months to come I would love to look out at the crowd and see vulnerable people allowing themselves to let go with their bodies and somehow take it seriously. I don’t just want to see an electronic rave dance off. I want people to feel good and have fun, but also leave with some sort of serious expression on them. I think they will be able to see something honest and real by the look on my face, the passion in our voice, and the spirit behind what we do. If they don’t that means I am doing something wrong.”

The band name Mike's Pawn Shop comes from a pawn shop in Lebanon TN right on the square next to where Mike's dad has worked for the last 30 years.
