Alrighty, I'm gonna try to cram all my thoughts into one little baby blog, so it may seem a little bipolar...bear with me.
I have never felt so loved in all my life! Here it is, right around the corner from Valentine's Day and Barnraisers couldn't ask for a better gift than to have Encore readers vote us best band of 2009! We just cain't ask for a better town and a better group of friends.
We'd like to thank all of those fine folks who took the time to fill out all those encore ballots, our friends and family who continuously come out to shows and hoot and holler and serve as body guards, cousin Matt for comin with me to the beauty parlor to get my hair done, and to all of those junk talkers out there who let us know we've been successful at gettin' under their skin (after all junk talkin' is the sincerest form of flattery). ;)
Thank you to Jesse Stockton and Paleface and Mo for playing the sweetheart showcase last night!  The music was right on and I have a feeling there was some romances kindled.  Thank you all for being so kind.  It was a grand ol night of kisses and roses!
For those of you who didn't notice that there were only two of us up there last night (wink wink), Barnraisers would like to let our fans know that we've decided to go back to our roots as a duo and explore other musical territory.   A special thanks goes to Benjamin Smith and Ryan Eversole for lending us their talent and energy. Their contributions have played a large part in our accomplishments and we appreciate it.

Stay tuned for more Barnraiser sass.  April 4th we'll be in Washington at the Turnage Theater and April 16th we're proud to be playing at Thalian Hall for Forward Motion Dance Company's Full Belly Benefit!  Joining us on upright will be the one and only Rick Williams of L Shape Lot and I know you ain't gonna wanna be missin that!  Much love to all of you!

Call me crazy, but there must be some sort of voodoo hex that is keeping Barnraisers and Charleston apart. Lord knows we love that city, but our jaunts there have brought us nothin, but heartache. Let's take a look at our most recent venture to the Holy City.

It seemed like just the right ingredients for a nice pot of Barnraisers stew. We got a great opportunity to play at the Map Room, a fine local venue with great ambiance and a really nice booking manager named Ryan. He was kind enough to give us an opportunity to play something called their Weststock Americana/folk festival. We got a decent spot in the lineup. Right after a sweet and talented musician named Laura Jane Vincent and right before sweet siren fronted bands Lasso and Kentucky Shoes. There was no reason on earth why we shouldn't have had the night of our lives. And then, the all too familiar Charleston curses began to materialize.

It all started the week of the show. There was a fever. A fever so intense that it would have made Job himself question his faith. A fever, followed by lots of mucus, aches, and loss of voice. So, I pumped myself full of vitamins and Robitussin and kept on trucking. Then the fever struck Adam. This time with the vengeance of Hurricane Hazel. Now, Adam ain't normally one to complain. So, if he starts to feeling squirrely, you can rest assured, he ain't gonna say nothing unless it's bad. And it was bad, boys and girls. The both of us didn't leave the bed for 5 solid days. Even the dog began to look at us with an expression of both pity and disdain.

The Friday we were to leave for Charleston, I gathered up enough energy to get up and fix some coffee. It was then that I heard the bang. The bang that would leave me cursing and swearing at the top of my lungs. Cursing the piece of trash who had just committed a little hit and run on my poor car. A hit and run that would result in $2,000 worth of damage! But that wasn't going to stop us! We had a regional gig! And how on earth could we let Charleston down? Matt volunteered to drive us to Chucktown and we were off, Adam propped up in the backseat with a few pillows.

Don't ask me why we didn't cancel. Adam was mighty sick, but I suppose we were worried it would look bad, us not showin' up to our first Charleston gig, so we trudged onward. And whatdya think happened once we got to downtown Charleston? Well, Adam's equilibrium was so outta sorts from the fever that he fell and busted his hip. It swelled up like like a daggone grapefruit and turned black and blue. He couldn't sit too long and couldn't stand too long. But I reckon we figured if we pumped full of painkillers and a beer or two, we could prop him up and nobody would notice.

It was about 4 songs into the set when I realized we were going down like a wounded buzzard. I don't know what caused it all to spin out of control, but it did. And by the time "Long Hot Summer" came around, there was no saving it. The looks on the crowds faces was kind of a mixture of pity and embarrassment. Kinda like the dog's face earlier in the week. Anyway, once it was all over, we were too ashamed to speak much to anybody and we got the hell outta there.

Now, that I don't have to look anyone in the eye, I'd like to thank a few people for trying to make it more bearable. Thanks to Jamie from Kentucky Shoes, for talking and bein nice and making us feel like we fit in with the crowd. Thanks to Ryan for giving us the chance to play in the first place. Thanks to the V Tones for just bein plain fun. Thanks to Laura Jane Vincent for the compliments. Thanks to the cute blonde boy backstage for saying he like Cluck Ole Hen, and thanks to the folks who e-mailed us and said they enjoyed the show.

Well, Charleston. I don't know what to say. But I think that Holy City's got some Devils with our name on 'em

Current mood:my feet hurt.

Well, we took a little trek to the low country this weekend to see how buskin in Charleston goes. Turns out, it went pretty well. We got some folks interested in us and managed to get a good whiskey shot despite the fact that I forgot my identification back in Wilmington. Tell you what though, I learned a few things about Charleston. Here's what you should know.

10. Traffic is a bitch in downtown Charleston.
I mean what is up? How do all those cars fit on a two lane road!?!?!

9. The Farmer's Market is a damn good place to eat on Saturday morning.
Gyros! mmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

8. People are nice to struggling musicians.
Nobody spat on us or went out of their way to avoid us.

7. Whether, your hotel is downtown or not, don't wear boots or heels if you're walkin'. ouch.

6. It's a lot like Wilmington when it comes to humans and roaches. They live harmoniously. Neither seems too afraid of the other.

5. It's also a lot like Wilmington when it comes to yankees. There's lots. Sometimes they live harmoniously too.

4. Their shrimp and grits is different. It's spicier and has a brown gravy. Not so creamy.

3. Unlike Wilmington, palm trees seem natural there. Wilmington just seems like it's posing a little bit with the palms.

2. Wilmington needs a big ol fat daddy park downtown. Charleston's park was the coolest. We spent almost 3 hours just hanging out in the park! It was great!

1. Darby is one bartender that can make life a lot easier when you're as scatter brained as I am.

So, I guess those are my top ten reasons to love Charleston. Just wanted to thank everyone for being so patient with the cd release. We're almost there! We'll be sure to keep you posted!

sincerely,
miss tiff

I'd like to say a super great big thanks to the folks who came out real early to see us play the harvest festival. It was a little difficult to play to a sober crowd in the sunshine, but y'all were sweet none-the-less and made it easier for us. So, we appreciate the folks who are sticking with us through our period of self discovery and metamorphosis. And to the new faces in the crowd, we hope you liked it and will return for future shows. Some of these shows may even be at night and you might have the advantage of an hour or two worth of drinks in you before we go on, which always makes the show seem a lot better than it is in reality. ;)

Thank you to Langhorne Slim's peeps, old ceremony, Jason Isbell's fellers, and the avett's for sharing a stage and that fancy schmancy vip tent with us. We know we're just the local music talent for now and that ain't saying much when you're in the company of these guys, but they shared their fancy beers with us and Jason Isbell even shared his Jack Daniels.

A special thank you to Brent and the Soapbox fellers for making my birthday one of the best ever. Thanks to y'all, I didn't have to buy a drink all night and I got to pretend I fit in with the big boys. Love you all.

We would just like to thank all of the residents on Ocracoke and everyone affiliated with the Ocrafolk Festival. That little island really knows how to treat folks. We felt welcomed from the moment we stepped off the ferry. A very special thank you to Gary Mitchell for having us, Carolina Still for giving us the contact, Ann Eringhaus for accomodating us, and Joe from Blackbeard's Lodge for giving us a ride back to the inn during Tropical storm Barry! Ocracoke is definitely a world of its own. We hope to be back very soon!
