Were finally back in the studio working on our long awaited cd...a complilation of original work finally laid down. Though Phatback can attribute many credits to these works, it really lays to rest a feeling of finalization for the band and it's main composers of the cd to come. This cd has been a dream for the main writers of these works, Jay Dickinson and Jim Burnette and a finalization of a erra for the rest of us involved in the creative process. We've played these songs for years, sang these songs for years. These songs are old to us, but so new and interesting and loved by those just hearing them for the first time. Coming soon will be our cd sampler to give you a taste of what's to come in the album to be released hopefully by summers end. We still have lot's of work to do, so if you don't see us out much in the coming months, know that we will be hittin' you up with somethin' phat very soon.

So we got throught the night, Friday the 13th, and Jason didn't rear his ugly head. The crowd was great and even managed to put down their pool sticks for a moment to watch and nod their heads. Our lead guitarist cousin, Ashely, who is a band friend as well, came long and far to come see us. I think we should hire her as the "band dancer". You know, the pretty girl that dances in front of the band to get everyone else up and dancin'. Heck, she even got Mary Layman, former band mate/lead singer up off of her seat...and movin' to the groovin'. Everyone seemed to love her. I have to admit, she even made me shake my phatback. Rick, our new rhythm guitarist played his first full night and made it through without any hitches. I know that I kept looking over used to seeing just Paul...and wait, "Hey Rick!". It's funny because we have played this music for years, both the originals and covers, but sometimes you can still feel like its not "right on", but the crowd loves it and thinks you SOOOOOOOO "right on". So, you tell yourself, "hey, right on!" Yes, we play for the crowd but we also play for ourselves. Were sick like that. It's a phatback obsession. We could go into a bar and have it be a dead night, and we can still give it our all and enjoy what we do...for that one person at the bar. I have even found myself clapping for myself, Jay, Paul & Jim - when the song was hot or they sounded amazing. Or rmaybe I hit that note that I never seem to do right in practice....even with a full house. Now that we have Rick, I'll be clapping for him at a gig too. Like some sort of self praise. Almost like, were playing for ourselves. I just love the guys and the band. It's a good band that can do alot. In the end, when the bar is closed and the fans have gone home...OH and the drunkards have gone home, we are still left with last nights show either evily impressed premanantly in our minds or angelically floating on beautiful fluffy satin pillows in our memory.....and it is left for ourselves as our own.

Phatback
"I was invited to a Rockitz benefit show at Bogart's and saw Phatback. I was pleasantly surprised since you never know what you're going toget entertainment-wise at benefits. Phatback was incredibly good, one of the best bands I've seen in a long time. The singer has an amazing voice, a diamond in the rough of Richmond. Like they say in the South, the sista could sang! Her voice was beautiful, strong, gutsy, intriguing, sexy and fun. Added to that, she's gorgeous and has a great personality. The lead guitarist is right up there with her. I noticed people staring at his guitar as he played and I heard comments about how great he is. The two of them have a great chemistry on stage, a musical sex appeal. They cued off each other, almost musically intertwined. Although he was announced as a new edition to the band, I wonder how new the other guitar player really was since he didn't miss a beat. The bass guitar had personality you could hear, great, interesting licks and very smooth. At one point when there was a slip up, the bass get it going and the singer kept singing and it all fell back into place. He made me chuckle with the faces he and the singer made at each other out of the blue, not signals but just personality, which is always nice for the audience. The drummer is the best in Richmond, in my oopinion. He could really play, like a trapped soul brother. I hope to see this band again."

Girl Bands
"Take an amazing, soulful vocalist and have her sing rock music perfectly, ignoring all the rules and leaving you wanting more. This is the lead singer of Phatback. I was impressed and pleased to see they brought her from the band Mercy. Renee is a good luck charm and a treat for the eyes. I congratulate her for a seamless slide back into queendome with a stronger and more confident voice. And applause to her Phatbackers for a united musical sound and tight back-up work. The drummer was very good, and he, too, had soul. When he played, you could feel the inner beat. The bass player and lead guitarist showed excellent skills when they played a very hip, driving, funkadelic original. The guitarist busted out a wawa sound and the bass grooved right along. Those guys were phat! The band has soul in all directions, a must-see."
