Alright dudes,
Since GiRL SPiT are now back in the rehearsal studio writing some new material, I thought it might be a good point to reflect on some of the high's we've experienced since the band formed at the end of January 2009.
So, we put this page up pretty much straight away, with a couple of awful demo's that we did in the first week of rehearsal. Since then we've recorded something like a 'proper' demo - Our first ep 'Cover Yourself in....'. We've averaged about 90 profile hits and 70 plays every day which ain't bad. The ep is available for FREE DOWNLOAD over at our Facebook page so if you like something for nothing, get yourself over there.
We got our skates on with the writing and recording, and also rehearsals (sometimes messy, drunken affairs but fun times!) to be ready to rock and roll on our first show 10th April 2009 at The Vintage Rock Bar in Doncaster. The original headlining band 'Pause Break Riot' pulled out of that one so we took top of the bill and drafted in our best buddies 'Up Against The Wall Motherfucker' to help us out as support. It was an amazing night, almost a capacity crowd which was completely unexpected. A few mistakes here and there, but on the whole a great first outing for the band and lots of lovely compliments from the crowd.
I won't bore you to death with a run down of each show we've played since, but we've done eleven shows since that debut nine weeks ago. Struggled in Rotherham where evidently there isn't a massive scene for unsigned bands but we've always had loads of fun, a few beers and a bit of this and that. A few great shows at Vintage Rock Bar in our home town, with great crowds, thanks so much for your support!
Got a bit of airplay with Ian Hodgson on BBC Radio Sheffield's 'Raw Talent' show. Props to him for doing a rush job on a radio edit to cut some of the more 'fruity' language out of the track to make it suitable for the Beeb! From that we've been contacted recently by Tom Robinson about playing one of tracks on his BBC Radio Six 'Introducing' show. No doubt we'll let you know when to tune in for that one.
A bit of a surprise was our second place in Doncaster's Battle of the Bands. As a new band we were a bit sceptical that we'd get anywhere against the 22 other bands, but we're glad we bothered to enter in the end. As with all 'competitions' there was a bit of controversy/back biting and even some 'paternal intervention' by one of the other bands, but it made the whole thing that much more interesting and fun! Anyway, we eventually lost out to a metal band from Sheffield, who are pretty fucking amazing tbh (Tiananmen).
So that's about it, 145 days of blood, sweat, tears, laughter, drugs, booze and above all Rock and Roll.
We're gonna fuck off for a bit now and write some more tunes. We have three or four in the pipeline already and a new rehearsal/recording studio to get our shit together in. The intention is to get maybe another five songs recorded as our second ep, ready for our next 'big' show with Vince Ray and the Boneshakers at Vintage in August.
Thanks a lot for all of your support over the last few weeks, special thanks to Rob Tinsley and Milli @ Vintage Rock Bar, Jimmy Mac, Up Against The Wall Motherfucker, Pete Dovey, our wives and girlfriends, Ian Hodgson at the BBC and last, but by no means least, Jery at Controls Dad.
