We are sorry to announce that FFR will not be able to perform on Thursday due to a death in the family.

The tour will resume on Friday Feb. 27 in Chicago.

We apologize to those in St. Louis and we will announce a make up date soon.

Best regards,

Hey everybody!

We are heading out on tour... finally!

We have a new lineup, new material, and a new van!

Becky Baxter (bass), Daniel Stegall (guitar), and Benjamin Hook (percussion/vocals/arranger) have moved on. For the touring version of the Foundry I have drafted three good friends from the band Bald Eagle.

Justin Nardy (bass), Danny Matteson (guitar) and Justin McCrady (drums/vocals) help with rounding out the sound of the Foundry Field Recordings sets.

For this tour we will be performing songs from the entire discography including new songs from the upcoming release "hierarchy [procession]".

We hope to see you out there!

Billy

So last night we ran a marathon session for the strings component of the record, which is currently named "Buried Chapters, Quiet Failures".

Maura Dunst and Jenn Johanning have been long time auxilary members of the Foundry. They are known for their string arrangement and performance work in Ellie Come Home.

I am happy to say that after working for 7 and a half hours we have the violin arrangements finished. This is some of Maura's best work and I cannot wait to get this mixed already.

We have some cello parts down for the song "On Wings of Gold and Bone". very dark and full. again i can't wait until we can mix this.

We still have some more work with horns and piano, but we are inching closer to mix time.

On the road team front, we have been working out the new songs with new members and everything is coming together better than expected. We will be debuting the new line up on Tuesday July 29 in Columbia, MO at Mojo's opening for Dr. Dog. We'll be doing a mix of older and newer material.

Its only fair that since we have updated our life, that you do the same.

Drop us a line and let us know how you are.

Best regards,

Billy (FFR)

as of 10:30 pm last night, josh johannpeter finished his percussion parts for the new album. with bass tracks down, percussion tracks down, it is now time to bring in the guitars, the keys, the strings, the brass, and the vocals...

then of course mixing

so we still have quite a bit of work ahead for us.

ffr is also happy to announce the addition of new road members. justin nardy on bass and peter hansen on drums. justin hails from the band Bald Eagle (amazing, just jaw dropping) and peter comes from Haii Usagi (another great local band that is just starting to get their wheels going). the rest of the roster will be filled out soon.

we will be posting some new live dates soon!

for now you can count on a columbia, mo date in late july, a Pygmalion Festival (Yo La Tengo, Black Mountain, etc.) weekend in september in Champaign, IL and two weeks of touring with Gentleman Auction House in the fall around the College Music Journal (CMJ) Festival in NYC. all dates will be posted soon!

the album is set for release in late january 2009...

anybody play bass clarinet out there?

a good segment of the population doesn’t quite understand all of the time and energy spent on making a record. they just hear the end result in a single song format or actually purchase the album for a 35 to 45 minute experience. albums can take months to years to create, formulate, execute, mix, master, manufacture and promote. it seems like a ridiculously long assembly line for a single product. BUT that is what we do, and for some reason we have this thing in on our brain that says "fuck yeah! let’s do this!"

we are not complaining about the process, in fact it is fun to an extent, but it is also work. so this past week we completed the drum and bass tracks. josh will be megabussing it back to chicago, while joe will come in to add some auxillary percussion parts. "Can I hear something yet?" no. this is only a fifth of the instrumentation that will go into each and every song. next step will be a round of scratch vocals and scratch guitar lines, then bring on the strings and horns and piano..

we are really excited to be working with our friends maura dunst (violin/starsky) and jennifer johanning (cello/hutch). besides being top shelf folks, maura and jen have played with the foundry in varying capacities including live and on tape. but they played the main part in one of our favorite columbia bands Ellie Come Home. Their music is floating around the internetz. if you get chance check their string work out, it is awesome.

as of now we are dumping everything from analog to digital and then we begin to add other instruments. hopefully we will have a title for this album soon. any suggestions for one?

So obviously a new album is being recorded. Barry Hibdon who has been at the board for the past two records is once again sitting in the engineer’s seat. We have gotten drum and bass tracks down for 8 songs, and have three more to go. Then we will let Josh head back to chicago, his band Mahjonng will be doing a two week tour in April, and I’m sure they will be covering more territory in the summer. In the meantime we are more than happy to have his assistance on this record. Besides recording some great bass lines Joe has also been very helpful in shaping the songs. So there is the update for now. If you want some early raw mixes to listen to we might make them available if you send only the nicest of emails...

best regards,

ffr!

Current mood:  focused
Hey all,
It has been awhile since things have been updated, so lets get to it.

A new Foundry Field Recordings album is under way. 12 new tracks are be constructed, dissected and reconstructed. I will be joined by friends Joe Schaefer (The Northerns, The Souls, and Record Collector) and Josh Johannpeter (Mahjongg and Bobby Conn) for bass and percussion duties in the studio. Another six or seven will make their way into the studio as well playing whatever instruments are handy.

My dear friends Becky Baxter, Benjamin Hook and Daniel Stegall have moved on but will surely be around the album in some capacity.

A new touring lineup is being constructed as well, and as soon as the album is released look for brand new tour dates...

I will post some early versions of tracks in the coming weeks.

Cheers,

Billy Schuh
