Freddie was one of the best Rock singers of his generation and I fondly remember seeing in Queen in 1974 and 1977!

I have 8 minutes to get on the bus. I am in a hotel in Norther Germany and now a 5 hour drive to the last show on the German leg of the tour. All is good and the music has sustained me. I will miss the German people and the German food but not the crappy German backline! On to Belgium then Holland Then France and then back to Holland!! It's a long way to the top if you want to Rock and Roll!!

The venue tonight was a beautiful and ornate Protestant church. A great place to unleash the profane! Indeed I did think I would burst into flames upon mounting the stage. But alas the packed house sustained me and an old time throw down ensued. What a great night. I could do no wrong with the audience and they showered me with love and money! I LOVE MY JOB!!!

Verviers is a small town in the French part of Belgium. In the heart of the commercial district stand on of Europe's coolest music clubs. Spirit of '66 (an obvious homage to a route 66 which no longer exists.) It is run by a bear of a man named Francis. He made his money in potatoes! Now he spends his life and energy on his passion which is to bring great Rock music to the people of his town. This is the kind of gig I love to play because it's about the music and the people. The sound is meticulous and the stage is so hot you can get heatstroke.
Last night it all came together for a truly great show. We opened with the power ballad Locked In A Memory and took off from there. 2 plus hours later they were still shouting for more.
The band was tight focused and I do believe we sounded good! Thanks be to the gods of rock!! Now on to Koblenz Germany and Cafe' Hahn.

I read how the Beatles would play and sing utter bullshit during large stadium shows and people would still scream. Made them quit the biz! Point is sometimes the audience is not the best barometer of who the band is actually sounding. As a matter of fact few bands and even bands who put on great shows were known for sounding good. Led Zepplin, The Stones, Nirvana, The Black Crows all have spotty reps for being hit or miss. I tape most shows and while I am secure in the fact that I can go out and kick major ass at all times I know that sometimes I don't sound as good as I would like. To define what makes a band sound good I thing the main factors are simple. Simple parts well played. I could complicate it with a lot of big words but thats it in a nutshell. Now when you add to the equation a shitload of adrenalin and some dicey sound(Don't get me started!) you have pure chaos.
My goal on this tour is to make order out of chaos. I want to hold the imploding atom in my palm and contain it with my intention.

Popa Chubby and Galea: a meld of Full-on Blues, Red-hot Rockabilly, Roots Rock'n'roll and an inspiring love story By Dr Cecilia Netolicky The inspiration for this piece came from a particular sequence of events. First, I felt privileged to have heard this couple making music in New York City. They have that magical rapport on stage you see with a few performing couples: Johnny Cash and June Carter, John Lennon and Yoko Ono. They appear to serve as each others' muse. Second, the day I returned we were dancing at The Mighty Quinn and a lady I'd never met stopped me as I was leaving the "Ladies Room" and asked in a serious and almost desperate tone, "What makes relationships work?". I seem to get asked this type of question with amazing regularity. I don't know if it was because she'd watched Josef and I dancing together, as this is often the catalyst, or if it's related to my personality type, which has led me to choose to work in caring and counselling professions. Anyway, reflecting on my response to her, I think the extract on Popa Chubby and Galea, from theElmore: saving music magazine, reflects the ideas embodied in my response to her. In brief, I told her "I believe sharing a passion for the same things is important - it's not what you do at work that counts (this you do separately), it's what you love doing on weekends and on holidays that's essential to a relationship being fulfilling. If you begin a relationship pretending to share interests, you won't feel fulfilled, or the relationship won't last. Many of us in the Rock'n'roll scene share a love of dancing, and a love of Rock'n'roll. It doesn't matter if we come from the same social class, earn comparable incomes, or work in similar professions - what we share, is a passion for what we do on weekends, in our time together. I believe, this shared passion is an important factor in what makes relationships work. Galea and Chubby's personal story reflects this shared passion that makes a relationship fulfilling, and works to make a couple more than the sum of its parts. | Cover of their CD |
Before heading to New York City, I Googled bands featuring Rock'n'roll, Roots, Swing, Rockabilly and Blues. I then chased these bands down through websites, youtube andmyspace. Vicous Country was a stand-out band. They were playing The Rodeo Bar (on the corner of 27th Street and 3rd Avenue) on our last Tuesday in NYC, so we pencilled this in as a "must do". Vicious Country is the brain-child of Popa Chubby and Galea, a couple with a fascinating personal story, producing a magical mix of Blues and Roots music. I watched Popa Chubby walk into the Rodeo Bar. He worked the crowd. Whether it came from his heart, or his sense of what you need to do to keep your fans on board and "make it" in the business, I don't know, as this was the first time I'd seen him, but I watched as he made each of his friends, and fans, feel special. Chubby took the time to talk to each one personally, and for that moment focussed on them. It came off to me, as an observer, as genuine, but I realize it may reflect just a savvy man with a highly tuned business sense. We've seldom seen bands we feel are "the whole enchilada". Well, Vicious Country seem to be just that - they have a unique sound (playing music as they feel it should be played, rather than as dictated by a style-textbook); an idiosyncratic look (that doesn't feel like costumes for the stage, but seems to reflect their philosophy of life); they play some original material, and when playing covers transmute them, and make them their own; and they make their audience and fans feel valued, as they realize this is what keeps them working. Popa Chubby and Galea also seem to have the knowledge, and commitment, to manage their promotion through articles, photographic representation and image development. Both also are strong songwriters, playing a significant number of originals, as well as morphing others' materials into a meld of their own. They seem to have what you need "to make it" in the music business, and what is needed to drive a Roots music revival of the potency of the Stray Cats 1980s Rockabilly revival. I've included this extract from an article on Popa Chubby and Galea as it provides a window into what drives them as musicians, and at the same time, I believe, provides an insight into what makes long term relationships work. |
