Quintana Biffert begins exciting career
Quintana Biffert's musical career began in 2000 at the age of eight when she entered the annual Dodge Talent Show in Dodge. Her mother, Debi, had been helping Quintana's sisters practice for the talent show. During a break in practice, Quintana put on Shania Twain's hit, "Honey I'm Home" and began to sing. Everyone just looked at each other, wondering where that voice had come from. With encouragement, Quintana entered the talent show. That night she placed first in the youth division. Her sisters, Jonna and Brooke, placed in the teen division. Each year since, the girls entered and placed. When the older girls graduated from high school their lives took different directions. But Quintana entered the show for the next three years. "This has become a tradition," Debi said. "Even if she wouldnt place, she would still enter as long as they would let her." When she turned twelve, it was year of change for the pre-teen. After winning a talent show in Bottineau in June of 2004, she was one of four winning the opportunity to open for Country Western headliner, Carolyn Dawn Johnson. "I was so excited," Quintana exclaimed. "I had my picture taken with her and got her autograph." The following month she was at the North Dakota State Fair singing on the "Dakota Free Talent Stage". She was noticed by Marilyn Kipp, associated with "Marketplace." Kipp made arrangements to have Quintana perform at Marketplace in Bismarck in 2005. She also sang the National Anthem during the opening ceremony. She began to travel and sing at various events, and caught the eye of many across our state who were looking for someone to entertain at their events. "She has performed at rodeos, town anniversary celebrations, fund raisers and has sung in parades," Debi said. "She also placed second in a Colgate Country Showdown in Lisbon." Now 14, she once again entered the 39th annual Dodge Talent Show and won first place singing, "Blue" recorded by Lee Ann Rimes. The Dodge Talent Show is mostly a country western show and is sponsored by the Dodge Saddle Club. Then, early in 2006, Debi and Quintana heard about MySpace.com, a web site set up for promising musicians. "It was a site suggested by a friend who is also a performer," Debi said. "I wasn't sure I wanted to create a site using MySpace after all of the negativity about it." The town she lives in is not listed and her mom closely monitors the site. "Anyone who has anything questionable in their profile is not approved, nor contacted," Debi said. Though MySpace recently has been surrounded in controversy, causing parents and others to raise many safety concerns, many in the music industry say it's an important tool. Biffert emphasizes the withholding of personal information if you or your child creates a site there. "I also stress that parents closely monitor the site and if your child protests, then they don't need the site," Debi said. According to Quintana and her mom, the site has been beneficial for them. Early in 2006 they met a singer/songwriter on MySpace.com by the name of Gordon Lyles. He and Debi wrote a song for Quintana. Lyles added guitar music, made some changes and sent it to Quintana and her mom for approval. "I made a couple of minor changes but otherwise the song is good and has a good message," Lyles said. "We liked what he did and now he's working on the final arrangement to the song. The final version will be done in a few weeks," Debi said. Quintana will record the song as well as sing it during her performances this summer. The song is an answer to Joe Nichols' song, "What's A Guy Gotta Do (To Get A Girl In This Town)." The title of her song is "Hey Joe, Get A Girl In This Town." "It's a fun song," Quintana said. She added, "I hope Joe hears the song and thinks it's a fun song." Lyles will add a few more instruments to the song and it will be ready to record. "I enjoy helping aspiring artists, especially someone as talented as Quintana," Lyles said. An aspiring artist himself, he was born and raised in Danville, VA. He plays drums, guitar, bass guitar, keyboards, mandolin and many other instruments. He confesses that everything he has learned was self-taught. He lives in Nashville and lives and breathes music. Even though Quintana and Lyles live miles apart, the love of music and singing has benefited both artists. "They're good friends and it goes to show that good things can come out of controversy," Debi said. Quintana has another original song written by Alice Delzer, Mandan. Debi reports that she called Alice about a year ago and asked if she mind write a song for Quintana. Delzer immediately set to work, wrote the song and it was recorded. "The name of the song is "I'm Just A Country Girl" and Ive sung it at a few performances," Quintana said. "I like the song and Alice did a good job." According to Debi, one song is copyrighted and the other is in the process. Quintana, 14, is a seventh grader at the Halliday School. She is a typical teenager who enjoys her family, friends, sports, pet cat and other school activities. She is also a teen who knows what she wants. She loves singing and performing and is all business when on stage. "Yet she has fun and doesn't get nervous," Debi said. "There are some events in the works now. I have to do some research before we make a final decision," Debi said. "It's a tough business but being in the right place at the right time is a key component to making it." With her determination and the great song writing skills of Lyles and Delzer, the talented youth will make it in the business. "This is a team effort," Debi said, "and, it's a good start to a great beginning."
