Sunday, September 7th, Gary appeared at the California Dry Bean Festival with Jenny Chivers. The early 11am slot was perfect, not quite so hot as later in the day. Jenny's show was a lot of fun - this being the first time out with her, and her husband Mike Chivers and Leo Sanchez on Drums. Gary covered keyboards on the one hour set and everyone had a great time.
Special thanks to Mike and Jenny for the invitation.

We moved up to a more robust studio environment this weekend.
Our new Omega Recording Engine and Cubase LE software are all installed to implement Pantheon Digital Effects and TrueReference monitoring. This is only the latest addition to an arsenal of powerful recording equipment and tools in our studio. This brings us to a count of five major hardware/software upgrades in the last two months.
With the spatial environment of lush and acoustically superior room models our capabilities of competing with the same sound signatures of major motion picture soundtracks we are ready to provide first quality cinematic sound scores.
This is the same equipment used in creation of countless motion picture soundtracks and in project studios around the world. Our tools include spatial sound design software with software controlled console operation that enable us to create panning, spatial and proximity effects that are equal to any others in use anywhere in the world.
If your sound design calls for travel in any direction in 360 degrees, we can put your motion picture audience right where you want them from their acoustic positioning. We call it four dimensional processing. We can remix your existing soundtrack to reflect this sense, even if your initial soundtrack was recorded monophonically. The design for this is first diagrammed according to our spotting session notes and then redirected and remixed to reflect appropriate positioning on the screen. This remixing of your original soundtrack is equalized, transitioned spatially and then carefully blended into the multi-track time-locked film action.
We are looking forward to hearing from you.
Thanks.

The modifications to our project studio are getting better and better. The current push is to upgrade our film/video synchronization setup. This has been a challenge from the start, but we are now confident that we can handle anything that comes up, regardless of the state it is in when we receive it.
Our flat panel display for screening is in the works and will replace the smaller one that is currently in use. The main goal from the start is provide a display that is viable from all angles in this room. Plasma was out from the beginning as it's glare was simply unacceptable. Angle viewing was distasteful to say the least.
The cassette rack will be gone this weekend as it occupies the space reserved for the LCD flat panel display. (BESIDES - cassettes???? Really! Some collections just die harder than others, I guess!)
The old titler setup is history as well. I liked it, but the digital capabilities of the current video editing system just outmodes it completely. (Can anyone say eBAY?)
The Vstudio recorders will be around for a long time to come. When the first acceptable 24 track comes along the current Vstudios will not be retired. The synchronization abilities of the older units will work perfectly with our upgrade.
For those in the immediate Tracy/Livermore/Stockton/Modesto area: if you have a project that needs sweetening or you just need help with post-production - give us a call at 209-401-7792 - there is a limited amount of time available in the first quarter of this year and we do have time to help right now. We can work out pricing and logistics with you fairly quickly.
Due to the limited size and the fact that we use this studio constantly - we do not accept any projects from artists that require onsite production or your physical presence here in the studio.

Last night we were able to get through ground/foundation tracks for three songs for our upcoming CD release. Playbacks went well - but one of the things that I tell all recording bands - distance yourself from the playbacks by aging them so you can listen with a critical ear. Mastering a CD REQUIRES hearing everything with fresh ears. You will beat a project to death if you are "glorying" over performances because even your present BEST performance will be tepid at best after you are able to step back. We use Roland V-Studios (an VS880EX and a VS840GX) to record our initial work on. (See the Photo-Slideshow on the mainpage for a photograph our our main console area). For those who would like to hear a couple of songs that you cannot hear on MySpace check out IIMA, brand new and just setup over the weekend. I will try to get some more music up on IIMA for you to listen to as we progress with this project. There are other links that you can explore on the band's main website. -g

The Galaris Music Directory is something that an Independent Music Artist cannot afford to be without. Galaris indexes Venues, Radio Stations, Music Reviewers, Websites that Host Your Music and just about anything else that you might need for marketing and promoting your music. In addition - it is point and click usage! If you find things that you want to check out, all that is necessary is to point and click with your mouse, your browser will open and POOF!, you are there! Check it out! I absolutely love this directory! -g

After listening to Emerson, Lake and Palmer - it occurred to me that I had never heard ANYONE do the theme from 007 in a act (other than maybe "Live and Let Die" by Guns and Roses) - so off we went researching a version that we could perform live of "The James Bond Theme". So - here is what is up - we are sequencing and putting together the full blown movie version of "The Theme From James Bond" as one of the "covers" for our upcoming live shows in 2007. This is the only place I am going to post this - so let's see if any of you remember when you come out to see us this coming year.
ALSO - "Writing on the Fly" - is back in action for us and we are learning quickly again how important it is to keep the recorder running during rehearsals. Last nite we surprised ourselves with a straight-up first pass, perfect new tune. I had read a lot of things by Lennon and McCartney where they said that they didn't know where their material was coming from and some of it seemed to write itself. NOW we understand and just such a song developed quickly last nite in a single pass! Go figure - the same thing commonly happens to painters, poets and writers. We thoroughly believe this now (and you will too).

Lasagna - the food that 99 9/10% of all musicians agree - fuels creativity.
I would like to thank my wife, Debbie, who takes care of us during rehearsals and recording sessions. We have been doing the dinner thing prior to playing for a long time and we all look forward to these great dishes and the time and care she puts into it.

4 Sessions - Nearly Two Hours of Material - Now What?
Power Tracks Audio Pro is a great program for capturing your rehearsals. This particular set was broken into 4 sections (ten songs) and ran nearly two hours when I began to look at what was there. Loading the material up is only a small part of the battle - the Audio Edit Window allows for loading the complete sections, but then you have to load and reload while you break songs out into their individual pieces - the easier method would have been to record each song separately and then the pieces would have been smaller and more manageable. INSTEAD - I just let the recorder run (in one instance nearly 45 minutes) - which left me with a lot of clean up to do. THEN there was the second problem - the balances were good - but the track was nowhere near enough soaked without some serious EQ and normalization to drag it all up to a good listening level.
I labeled each section when I saved like this - Session1-06032006, Session2-06032006, etc. until I had saved all four parts. These larger parts would then be available to glean the actual song material that had been recorded from in multiple editing passes. This is not a small job. You begin by trimming the tuning noises, dirty jokes (yeah! :) , spirited laughter and other miscellani out of your material. This is easy to do once you open the audio edit window and simply listen making note of where the punch/clip marks will be made to edit it down to an easier to work with size. Editing waves is a snap in Power Tracks Pro Audio - for the modest amount that you can purchase this software for you will be absolutely amazed at the results you can get. For starters - I have 48 tracks available - and don't think mixdown is difficult - it isn't.
As a note to this - all balances are individually adjustable and one session track that was recorded includes "RAIN" (Beatles) which was recorded orginally with only one vocal track on the initial sound check track. After the fact I was able to go back and record additional vocal harmonies to enhance the recording quite a bit. (I am chuckling to myself as I work on this just waiting for the guys to hear THIS).
Power Tracks Pro Audio also has an incredible feature called MERGE TRACKS TO A WAVE FILE which gives you the opportunity to merge two or even 48 tracks complete with DX audio effects, reverb and whatever else the bug you had at the time caused you to do. This in turn can then be loaded to a true mastering program like WAVELAB for further work and enhancement (e.g. additional EQ and even punching if necessary).
Scroll down a ways to see POWER TRACKS PRO AUDIO and BAND IN A BOX for a great price, all orderable with a simple click of a mouse.
To further elaborate - the wave edit window (AUDIO EDIT WINDOW) in Power Tracks Pro Audio allows for very accurate trimming and editing. (A La PRO TOOLS style!). While I am not planning to do this on this pass - you can futher enhance your recording with samplers, additional percussion, even more vocals or guitar doubling. You can also build a project from scratch with nothing more than a click track and a drum machine - and if you DON'T WANT to mess with an actual drum machine - Power Tracks Pro Audio will FILL YOUR TRACK with drums which are available in the software itself.
As you can already surmise - Power Tracks Pro Audio is an economical and powerful way to record - you can produce manufacturing quality CD masters with the skill that you will rapidly acquire using this program.
Till Next Time.
