Current mood:  exhausted
Oh my word.
I'm currently back in drizzly York and feeling a little deflated to be back in the real world.
After leaving Doncaster on a high, the intrepid flamesters trekked to sunny Scunny to play the Lincoln Imp, the place was pretty quiet and a tad earthy, but we set up and got the beers in. The turnout wasn't great, Leeds Fest apparently being the cause, but Mid Sentence had a brave stab at waking up the small crowd. We went on next and played a pretty good set, getting Feel Free in tune this time was nice! Then the Theo boys got up to do what they do best for the penultimate time. They didn't disappoint. With his usual level of tact Mikey called the staunchly seated emo kids at the side 'proper boring bastards' and then sat proceeded to sit down cross legged, along with half the crowd, for the next song. By the end of their set though, people were finally moving, and all wasn't lost.
We then headed back to base camp in Donny (ta mam) to get some brief rest.

Up early for some van repair, we fuelled up at KFC and set off on a pretty drive across the Pennines. Three hours later we pulled up in Oswestry and as soon as we entered the Fox Inn and heard Fear Factory blasting out of the PA we knew we were onto a winner. It's a killer little old venue, with a stage out back and a good hundred people crammed in, with no scene kids to be seen (well, except Ben Wright...) The bands playing before us varied from funk to thrash and were all doing pretty well. The atmosphere was really friendly, there were fire breathers and circus acts between bands and, most importantly, beer was free for bands. Get in.

After Apollyon, we were up. There was no power for transmitters and no room to dive about, but we played probably our best show of the tour. The crowd started coming forward and the evening began to take off. Gig done, we got our teeth into the free beers and enjoyed a bunch of bands.

Then it was Waking Theo's turn. It was a pretty emotional thing to see their farewell show in a place where they have such great support. They tore into the songs with their usual chaotic aplomb, with Ben Falling over early on and Mikey scaling the side of the stage, sending mic stands crashing here and there. It was awesome, a wall of death was instigated and a melee ensued when a free t-shirt was thrown into the crowd. Fire-breather Moose thought he had it until Mikey enouraged people to mosh for it. A standing ovation and chants of 'THEO! THEO!' saw the boys leave the stage for the last time, leaving Primal State to close the night. Waking Theo: Legends.

DIF and Theo then headed to the bar (in deepest Shropshire bear in mind) for shots of Jack and raucous chants of 'YORKSHIRE! YORKSHIRE!' Shortly after, everyone was covered in Sharpie tattoos (my knuckles still say 'slow time'?!) and a bottle of Jaeger was opened and finished in ten minutes. Mikey got creamed and we all piled back to Primal State Rosie and Jay's house where we drank and discussed the finer points of docking...again. Bad jokes were bandied around (Ben's extractor fan joke was excruciating) and an impromptu outbreak of Stomach Stomp percussion resulted in the neighbours pounding on the walls. It was 6am by this point.

A few hours later we were up for the drive home, and a return to work and reality. Thanks go out to every single person who came to a show, did sound, bought a shirt, let us stay on their floor, and so on, and so on...

I must say it's been one of the best weeks of my life, full of highs, lows and laughter with some good friends and some damn good music. This is what it's all about. Waking Theo will be sorely missed, who else will be as much fun on the road??

We're booking the next tour already.

See you somewhere,

Aaaaaw shit!
After an unfortunate day off due to the Barnsley show cancellation. A somewhat revitalised (read 'hungover') DIF arrived in Doncaster ready to rock and dock!
The venue was a little scary, playing really loud reggae, but the soundguys were cool and the place quickly filled up.
This was the busiest date of the tour so far, and Waking Theo opened up, after wolfing down a bunch of burgers (Ben puked haha), and were predictably excellent. I never tire of that lounge intro.
We were next up and had 90% of a blinder. Everything was going well until 'Feel Free' where something went awry, and I was wailing off key trying my best to get the song back on track. I failed and it sucked. Eeh well, lol...
We finished on a brutal Save Yourself and were chuffed with all the people who turned up. (Matty, Bex, Jim, Mutha, etc etc U guys rule!)
Through her eyes headlined minus their bassist and were pretty brutal, inspiring some crazy ass mosh/dancing.
After knocking back some Scotsmac (whisky and fortified wine - nice one Dave) the band went back to me Mam's for more booze and that.

Now for sunny Scunny!

YEAH MATE!
Theo and the Flamesters arrived in Edinburgh after a long day's driving. A few navigational errors and fuel crises aside, we arrived in good spirits to find a city full of atmosphere and cool people, with the fringe festival in full swing. We were led into a small underground room that was damp and sweaty as hell. As the night went on, hardly anyone was there and we were more than a little concerned about the lack of any local bands on the bill. Late Night invitation and Psychoattractive played energetic sets, and by the time DIF clambered onstage people began to filter in. Again, a tiny stage made it tough to move around much, and my throat bug hampered 'You! You! You!' a little, but we found our form and played a good un. Theo followed and were awesome as ever, despite Mikey deciding to declare verbal war on all Scottish people, while in Scotland.

After the show we all piled back to our good friends Jo and Lee's place and proceeded to drink and be generally rowdy 'til the sun came up.

For some reason we got up early, still laughing about 'docking' and 'danger docking', to have a wander round Edinburgh, a burger, then a trip to Glasgow, where it all went wrong...

After an hour of negotiating the ridiculous one-way system we finally found Rockers Bar, which was...closed.
A dash to McD's for wifi proved our worries true...cancelled.
Tits.

So, here we are, sitting in Solid Rock Cafe in Glasgow trying to find a place to let Yorkshire's premier metal bands play...
Wish us luck!
Eeh well, keep it easy!

After cancellations in Leeds and Chesterfield, the York show became the opening night!
I'm glad to say that, despite the heat in the venue, plenty of folk came out and we had a sweet night. Oblivion Gene opened up with some solid Huddersfield metal, and some sweet drumming! York metal scamps Epidemic were up next, and they were utterly awesome! A ton of riffage and some awesome beatdowns, and nice lads to boot. Cheers boys!
Then, it was our turn... On the smallest stage we've ever played on! This made us a little less mobile than usual (the roof was so low, I had to refrain from jumping!), but we gave it some and had a blast.
Waking Theo arrived onstage with a lounge intro, which soon kicked into their trademark screamy noise, and totally blew me away, this being the first time I'd seen them. Craig joined them towards the end to lend an extra throat to the proceedings.
All in all a great night! The merch is selling well, people are digging the new songs and no-one has broken any bones yet!
Tomorrow, we head to Edinburgh for the Scottish leg of the tour.
It's gonna be brutal!

See you at the front,

LOCAL CD REVIEW

Drowned in Flames: Save Yourself (EP)

HARROGATE four-piece metal band Drowned in Flames make the sort of sound that makes you want to floor a house with your bare hands - or invade a small country.
I once described their drummer David Colston as the most exciting I’d ever seen in Harrogate, arms flailing, bass drum pounding, conjuring up a rattling, rollicking storm at one of DJ Trev‘s Bottom of the Bottle nights.
That was in the days of their first demo back in 2006 when the band could be awful or brilliant, sometimes in the space of a song.
Time and experience has taken away a lot of that unpredictability - and some of the excitement of that unpredictability.
What has replaced it on this new EP is something slicker and more focussed - the finished article.
The thunderous, drill hard aggression and growling vocals remain, as does the mix of grunge-pop chord structure married to thrash metal energy and rock lead guitar.
It’s just done better and tighter with their biggest previous weakness, the singing, now replaced by impressive call and response vocals by dual frontmen Niall Macdougall and Craig Gordon.
All the band lack now is one quirky spark of originality, that killer tune, though there isn’t a bad track here, not opener Save Yourself, closer I Am The Destroyer nor, my favourite, Another Day In Hell.
When the track breaks down after two minutes 43 seconds into a showy, stop-start section, then at 3.34 min breaks out into a fast-paced, fuzzy, melodic guitar solo straight from early Smashing Pumpkins (or Queen), all that granite hardness softened by a hint of lushness, Drowned in Flames make you believe a marriage of the hardcore and the mainstream lies just the other side of the mountain.

PS I haven’t mentioned bassist Arran Johnson anywhere. Sorry, Arran.

Ok firstly we are sad to announce that Ade has left the band. Unfortunately Ade felt he could no longer give the band the 100% commitment that is required and therefore felt it was in everyone's best interests if he left. We want to thank Ade for all his hard work and efforts over the past few years and wish him all the best in what he does. Cheers buddy.
Replacing Ade on the bass will be our good friend Arran Johnson. Arran is an excellent bassist, vocalist and all round musician. We are very excited about the new ideas Arran will bring to the band and some of the new directions we could take. You can check out some of his solo acoustic material by visiting his myspace page via our top friends.

A big thanks to everyone that came to our recent shows, there shall be plenty more to follow

cheers

Poison the Well + Ecclecia + Drowned In Flames
11th April 2009
Fibbers Barfly, York
By Suzy Witts

Drowned In Flames provided a metalcore start to the evening. They've been going for about 3 years but have just had a 6 month break (according to their MySpace) however despite this gap they played well and I only noticed a couple of slips within their performance. Drowned in Flames are pretty heavy really but they were a good choice for the opening slot; they have two singers, one bringing a melodic sound to the songs and another bringing a more screamy sound. Even though I don't usually listen to this kind of music I actually found myself getting quite into it. I felt there was lots of potential here and I'm looking forward to seeing how they progress over time.

Ecclecia were second on the stage and my first impressions of this band were good; they started with some good tunes and played them well. The band also brought a lot of fans along to the show. However I was disappointed with their overall set and quickly tired of the music. A lot of the songs were quite similar sounding and not particularly memorable. They did have a lot of enthusiasm and energy but in general they weren't really for me.

The venue wasn't quite as packed as I expected for Poison the Well, but it didn't impact on the band's performance. High energy, Jeffrey Moreira walked back and forth on the stage, never keeping still for a moment, screaming into the mic. The other band members were also constantly moving around the stage to the music. The fans who did turn up were giving it their all - jumping around the floor, shouting the words out loud and one person even jumped over the barrier onto the stage a couple of times to sing with his idol; die hard fan for sure. Despite not having heard much of this band's material prior to the gig, I really enjoyed their set. The songs fluctuated in terms of tempo - some being fast and others more chilled out which was refreshing as it gave the crowd and band time for a breather.

I'd probably describe their sound as combined metal/punk/hardcore but more old school than metalcore. It's not everyone's thing and some of the people who had come to see the supports seemed to disappear rapidly once PTW started. But I enjoyed myself and I'd definitely go and see the band again.

Well it's been a busy week here at the downed in flame camp (aka my sofa). First of all we've been confirmed to appear on the covermount cd of devolution magazine along with a pic in the mag. Badass. Be sure to pick up a copy when it comes out in May. Check em out they're in our top friends.

Secondly we booked a fine gig at Fibbers in York with one of our fav bands POISON THE WELL. This is massive for us as it's our first major support and we need everyone to come down and show us some support. Tickets cost £6 with a flyer that will be on our page within the next day or 2. Please come down as it is awesomeness guaranteed! Saturday April 11th doors at 7.30pm.

Thirdly we competed in the first round of the rehab battle of the bands and actually won. That was a weird feeling. MASSIVE thanks to everyone that came down, stuck around and voted. it was an awesome night and all the bands were great. not sure when the next round is but when we get the date it will be posted in the gig listings.

good fucking times

cheers fuckers

well we finally managed it and dragged our lazy asses into the studio last weekend and put down 3 tracks. It all went very well and it is now in the hands of our good friend ben mccluskey who will be providing the final mix. in the meantime if any tracks pop up online they are rough, un-mixed 'demos' merely to give you a taste of whats instore.

also on the gig side of things we are applying the anytime, anyplace, anywhere ethic so if anyone wants to do a show or put us on you know what to do.

cheers bitches

hello there people. i've taken it upon my good self to re-design and change the DIF page. Since we pretty much don't sound (or look) like the band we were before it seemed like a good idea. Also, those of you with eagle ears (!?) may have noticed that the track playing is an old C4 track. well indeed it is but we are yet to record any new material and we now play this song live and me and dave wrote and recorded it. so bollocks.

love you
