Get Involved. Join the Hyphen Staff. Learn Nonprofit Asian Am Mag Biz

JOIN THE HYPHEN STAFF

But wait, what is Hyphen might you ask?

Hyphen
is a national magazine for urban, in-the-know Asian Americans. Covering
arts, culture and politics with substance, style and sass, Hyphen has
become a media must for one of the fastest growing populations in
America.

Hyphen was conceived in 2003 by San Francisco Bay Area journalists
and community leaders who saw the need for a publication about Asian
America that would go beyond Lucy Liu, sushi and yet another
examination of the "model minority" story. With award-winning design
and fresh perspectives that aren't just about identity issues, Hyphen
covers the artists and change-makers who are shaping what it means to
be Asian American. By showcasing people outside the boundaries of
stereotypes, Hyphen acts as a cultural catalyst, inspiring its
readership to branch out — to do, think and create.

Hyphen is not-for-profit and run entirely by volunteers. The
hundreds of hours spent by writers, artists, editors, designers, web
gurus, bloggers, [fill in the blank] coordinators, and other lackeys
all unpaid. It's a labor of love.

BUSINESS TEAM

Hyphen is looking for smart, overachieving,
creative, articulate, innovative, detailed-oriented and above all,
dedicated members to join its Business Team. We are interested in
social justice issues, politics and pop culture. There is no money
involved, just the experience of working alongside the finest Asian
American minds that community college ever produced.

General Duties & Responsibilities:
· Commit to attending meetings (two Tuesdays a month)
· Lend your hand to existing projects, such as advertising and sponsorship efforts, and event planning
· Brainstorm for the good of the magazine

· Lead new initiatives from start to finish (and take over others should you wish)
· Table at Hyphen sponsored events
· Sport our merchandise because it's in fashion every season

Knowledge and Skills:

· Proven human intelligence, don't worry we won't poke you to see if you respond to stimuli
· Team player, and not a lone wolf
· Self-motivated, hard-working ethic
· Post-identity politicked
· Down for the cause but not obsessed by it

· Not easily offended or dissuaded by hard-asses
· Loves culture, your momma and self (not in that order)

In
a nutshell, we're looking for non-flaky folks landlocked to the San
Francisco Bay Area. Those interested should submit a cover letter and
resume to business@hyphenmagazine.com.

MEET US FIRST TO MAKE SURE WE ARE NOT CRAZY

Sure
thing! If you're now slightly hovering over your seat, let's give you
some wings because you're going to get tired. Meet with the Hyphen
Business Team at EZ5 (located at 684 Commercial St, San Francisco, CA)
from 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm on Tuesday, February 24th and Tuesday, March
24th. Come with cash for drinks, a smile on your face, and an open hand
to shake. We welcome you to announce yourself prior to your arrival,
please contact Ianna Huang at ianna(at)hyphenmagazine.com with any thoughts and/or questions, but please no Spanish Inquisition!

Aristotle Garcia Crowned Mr. Hyphen 2008
Hyphen magazine is thrilled to announce Mr. Hyphen 2008:

ARISTOTLE GARCIA

2921091984_74c300b4a6.jpg
On Saturday October 4, 2008, Aristotle Garcia charmed a packed house at the Oakland Community Center to be crowned Mr. Hyphen 2008. In the process, he won $1,000 for the charity he represents: the Filipino American Arts and Exposition, a grassroots, nonprofit organization that contributes to the artistic and cultural pride of the Filipino American community.

Six outstanding candidates competed for the crown:

Scott Chan, Leadership Education for Asian Pacifics
Aristotle Garcia, Filipino-American Arts & Exposition
Mike Liu, Spring Buds / California Dragon Boat Association
Maurice Seaty, Southeast Asian Student Coalition
Eric Tam, Asian American Donor Program
Rockson Yan, API Legal Outreach Youth Program

It was an adrenaline-driven evening, requiring each of the contestants to display every facet of his creativity and intelligence. At times, the cheering from enthusiastic fans was deafening, and it is certainly evident now, three years from the inception of the event: Mr. Hyphen is a title that is highly coveted and valued by the community.

Emcee Samantha Chanse elevated the electrifying event with her witty delivery and charm. The event was judged by Vincent Pan (representing the CAA - Chinese for Affirmative Action), Robin Sukhadia (representing Project Ahimsa), and Louisa Liu, Miss Asian America 2008.

The primary criteria for winning the entire contest hinged upon each contestant's ability to connect his inspiring activism and talent to his personality. Each candidate proved that Asian American men today are making a huge difference in the community, and elevating the stature of Asian American men in the eyes of the mainstream in the process.

In the end, Aristotle's performance in the talent segment, his poise during the fashion and sleepwear segments, and his eloquence answering questions earned him the crown. Runner-up Maurice Seaty was a close second. Both candidates were highly effective in conveying their commitment to the causes they represent.

Mr. Hyphen 2008 Contest

MR H 08 flier

September 12, 2008 Oakland, CA Back by popular demand, Hyphen presents the 3rd annual Mr. Hyphen competition on October 4, 2008, celebrating the men of the Asian American community.  Each year, Hyphen celebrates Asian American men who devote themselves to worthy community causes. While structured like a pageant with rounds of talent, fashion and Q&A, Mr. Hyphen turns stereotypes on their heads in front of a sold-out crowd. Striking a blow for equal-opportunity all-in-good-fun ogling, Mr. Hyphen is an energy-filled evening of fun and charity. Rounds will be decided
alternately by an audience vote and by an illustrious panel of judges. The man who is crowned Mr. Hyphen wins a $1000 cash donation to his nonprofit organization.

Although there have been recent strides forward in the love Asian American men get from the media, there is still a ways to go. Hyphen's Founding Editor Melissa Hung says, "Asian men are constantly portrayed as nerdy and unattractive. Hyphen is sick of these stereotypes. The Asian American men we know are witty, sexy and dedicated. That's why we throw this annual event honoring them, specifically the men who have contributed to the nonprofits that enrich our community."
