All the married ladies! And all the ladies with significant others. Put your hands up and let us talk. My husband and I try to spend as much time together as we can and I really love it; those “times together” make everything perfect - - even when it’s not. Anyhow, I made a deal with him that on Sundays, he gets control of the remote. I thought this would be a great idea as I have the other six days to watch whatever I want (if I ever get in front of the television). We normally end up hanging out with each other anyway, but I just love the thought of having control of the remote. Well, when I made the deal, how was I to know that every sports event has its final showdown on a Sunday, and the only thing playing on our television would be sports related. The NFL, the NBA, Tiger Woods and all his buddies, it just never ends. Case in point: The Final Four! I watched so much basketball over the past two weeks I think I’m actually getting to like it. I was sitting there and found myself cheering for Syracuse wondering when the next game would be, and if we had that team in our bracket - - well…my husband’s bracket. What is happening to me? I’m becoming a sports nut because of this man! He hasn’t become a Top Chef nut. Does he know who the final four are on Project Runway? He doesn’t even know that Bringing Home Baby can be seen twice a day on TLC (please don’t ask how I know that!). Help me ladies. Should I just accept it and become a sports wife nut, or should I fight this foe and take back control of my Sunday remote ☺?

March 9, 2009 So, I just have a couple days at home before we’re off to LA for The Tonight Show on Thursday. My voice is slowly getting back to normal - - I think! I really had a tough time this winter season. The cold, allergies, acid - - they all hit at the same time and left me with the perfect storm in my throat. But I think we’ll be fine! Lent began a few weeks ago and even though I’m not a Catholic, I decided to join our brothers and sisters in “giving up” something for 40 days. So, I made a list of things I would give up, and some things I decided I ”can’t-not-do.” So, I’ve given up white! No white flour, no white rice - - no anything in the white family. This is awful for me because I can have rice with EVERYTHING, and brown rice just doesn’t cut it for me. Anyhow, I’m going to do it! I’m going to stay away from rice, and white bread and flour tortillas and pita bread . . . Lord, WHHHHHYYYY, NOOOOOOOOO! Sorry about that . . .. Well, I’ve also given up everything fried. I’m normally good about this, but there’s always a day or two when I fall off the wagon, but I’m trying to hold firm . . . even though my husband continues to order and eat his fries in front of me. The devil is tempting me . . . TEMPTING ME!! My “can’t-not-do” list includes, warming up everyday for at least an hour. And I must read my Bible and write my journal everyday even if it’s just one or two lines. So those are some of my Lent decisions. Wanna’ share yours?

February 24, 2009 It’s the day before Ash Wednesday, which means that my favorite island in the Caribbean, New Orleans and quite a few other countries are celebrating Mardi Gras. I can assure that there’s quite a bit of dancing in the streets of Trinidad, the island is jumping to some of the best infectious music ever written . . . and somewhere in the middle of all the madness, some member of my family is having the time of their lives and could care less that I’m on a train heading to Philadelphia wishing I was on a beach in Trinidad.

February 23, 2009 I’ve been doing a little promotional tour for the album for the past two weeks. It’s a little tiring but it’s part of the gig, right! I did have two days at home, so that was great. There’s nothing like sleeping in your own bed. My voice is still not back to normal. The doctor thinks that it’s a combination of allergies (yeah, I said the same thing - - “allergies… in February?”) and acid. Acid reflux is my constant enemy. I was diagnosed with it while I was in Aida and I can’t seem to kick it all the way. Maybe it’s because the Trinidadian in me won’t allow the rest of me to stop eating spicy food. In order to alleviate my acid problem, my doctor has givien me a regimen to follow, but I hate doing it. But more than that, I hate his exams. In order to see my vocal chords, he has to push a little camera in my nose and down the back of my throat where he positions his little "helper" right above my chords so he can see them. While the camera is down there, he then has the nerve to ask me to sing so he can see what’s going on with my voice. And that’s not even the extent of the torture he inflicts on me. So, with that said, I will be following my doctor’s orders. As sweet as he is and as much as he helps me, I don’t want to see him for the next few months ☺. Thanks doc!

‘Back on dry land. I’m so happy to be back home, and for once, Chicago is welcoming me back with a slightly warmer temperature than FREEZING! I haven’t found my legs yet, though. I still keep thinking that the room is moving (for those of you who haven’t been on cruise before, sometimes you can feel the movement of the ship days after you get off of it - - mine is going on way too long!). I was singing at our church this morning and felt like the entire church was moving from side to side, but we made it through J My doctor says that I still have some lingering problems from my bout of laryngitis a few weeks ago, so I’m going to take a week to get my voice together. I can’t keep singing on tired or sick chords - - they’ll never get better. So, I’ll give my voice a little time to heal and then (hopefully) we’ll be good as new J. The room is rocking again . . . HAH!

Today we’re docked somewhere in the Caribbean ocean a short sail from the Bahamas. It’s great to be in warmer weather although it’s not as warm as I’d like it to be. I shouldn’t complain but the weather has been in the high 50s - low 60s and for me, that’s still close to freezing. Coat needed! Anyhow, I shouldn’t complain. I did fly here from CHICAGO! My voice is still not at 100%. It’s still a little swollen and tight in there, but I’m hoping it shows up for our 90 minute show tomorrow night. I haven’t sung for a couple weeks just making sure it can heal, but I’m not sure it has. We’ll see, won’t we!

I’m on the Smooth Music Cruise and our first stop was Key West. We rented a little golf cart and drove around the town. It was pretty quiet there in Key West, not the normal bustle, but it was great. It’s a quaint town, with these great little restaurants and homes. A local (always go with the locals) suggested that we should have breakfast at a little restaurant called PePe’s. It’s the oldest restaurant in Key West and they’ve perfected what they’re doing. I had (what my husband called) ”dessert” for breakfast. They made me French toast with peaches, blueberries and blackberries, crumbled graham crackers and some other sweet savory that won’t allow me to ditch the gym for a few weeks. I don’t even like French toast but this concoction was amazing. I also had my poor husband drive by the Key Lime Factory so I could have their famous pie. Now, I’m really not a sweet tooth, but this was worth it. So, I had dessert for lunch too . . . and dinner! If you get a chance to go to Key West, check out PePe’s and the Key Lime Factory. You won’t be disappointed; your hips may be, but your taste buds will thank me J.
