Saint Louis, MO February 17, 2009 – Dantes, a long-time icon in the
avant-garde club music scene in St. Louis, has just announced that
they are embarking upon a new musical endeavor: it's an Indie party,
and it's called Filthy.
Despite the name, patrons are more likely to discover "dirty rock n'
roll" from the hipster's diet of modern Indie and electro than
anything all that risqué (put away those dollar bills, the G-strings
are still on the East side). The bi-monthly event is held the first
and third Saturdays of every month beginning April 4, 2009, and
includes seasoned musicians and DJs both from St. Louis and far beyond
– in one instance, more than 8,000 miles beyond.
"We've focused on creating a format that hasn't been done in St.
Louis," said Rose Hemlock, band promoter and DJ at Filthy. "One of
our lead promoters manages The Red Room in Johannesburg, South Africa
and has for over five years. I recently visited the club there and
was struck by how everything about the place is designed to encourage
people to just rock out and lose themselves. It felt like a movie
scene: strobes, smoke, gorgeous people. We're generally not as
dramatic here."
All of that is about to change, according to the promoters of Filthy.
The party has already secured sponsorships with some of Indie's most
beloved names and faces, and promises to host record release parties,
live performances, and hopefully encourage growth in the music culture
of St. Louis in general. Combine that with a format of music
described as "indie, electro, 80's, dirty rock n' roll, guilty
pleasures" and Filthy may just have a winning recipe – complete from
A-ha to the Yeah Yeah Yeah's.
