The Zone
by Origix

Horrorcore rap is like the lyrical version of death metal or a very vivid dark music. The genre was originally considered a fad, just as the hip-hop culture was once considered. But now more than ever, horrorcore is growing and is at the forefront of the Michigan scene.

Southgate’s Ikkurruz could be the key ingredient to keep the format fresh. When approached last year by Anybody Killa (ABK) to join his label Native World Inc., he saw the potential to bring music to this fan base.  Ikkurruz understands there are no hand- outs in this game. That’s why you see this dude with crazy promotion.

Ikkurruz is now working on his fourth album, Dismembered in December, with producer Stir Crazy on the beats. This December, they will bring some hardhittin' horrorcore, just like the kids like it. Ikkurruz comments on negative press about horrorcore: “People fear what they don’t understand. Come to a show and see all the love around, then write your story.”

He’s already rockin' shows as far away as New Mexico and Denver but his next stop is at home as part of The Down River Hip Hop Jam 2009 on Friday, October 16, at Simons in Allen Park. More info at  myspace.com/ikkurruzmusic.  | RDW

What is HorrorCore?
A common question is "What exactly is horrorcore music?" While peoples opinions on the matter are broad, the definition is fairly simple if you just look at what the word is made up of:
"Horror" + "Core"
The dictionary defines "horror" as:
hor•ror Pronunciation Key (hôrr, hr-)
1. An intense, painful feeling of repugnance and fear. See Synonyms at fear.
2. Intense dislike; abhorrence.
3. A cause of horror.
4. Informal. Something unpleasant, ugly, or disagreeable: That hat is a horror.
5. horrors Informal. Intense nervous depression or anxiety.
Basically, horror draws on the basic human emotions such as fear, terror, and dread. Like watching a horror movie that is freakin' you out and makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up or sends chills down your spine. It's the same principle in music. The subject matter is supposed to be morbid, scary, and similar to stuff you would see in horror movies or what you would read in horror novels.
The dictionary defines "core" as:
core Pronunciation Key (kôr, kr)
1. The hard or fibrous central part of certain fruits, such as the apple or pear, containing the seeds.
2. The central or innermost part: the hard elastic core of a baseball; a rod with a hollow core.
3. The basic or most important part; the essence: a small core of dedicated supporters; the core of the problem.
Emphasis placed on 2 & 3. It basically states that it's the center or the focus of. In this case, "horror" being the focus of the music.
Who actually coined the word "horrorcore" is not exactly known and often disputed. The originator of the term is often accredited to the Flatlinerz. However artists have been doing horror-rap as far back as the mid-80's with artists such as Ganxsta Nip, Insane Poetry, Esham, and some even say the Geto Boys - long before the word 'horrorcore' was known.
The word "horrorcore" gained mainstream attention with the rise in popularity of the Flatlinerz and Gravediggaz back in the early 90's when they came on the scene with their debut albums "USA (Under Satan's Authority)" and "6 Feet Deep." The Flatlinerz were banking on the fact that Russel Simmons' (at the time head of Def Jam records) nephew Jamal "Redrum" was the pointman for the Flatlinerz VS. RZA of Wu-Tang clan who was the top dog from the Gravediggaz. The popularity of the Wu-Tang Clan at this time was undeniable, so naturally the Gravediggaz were instantly in the limelight by piggy-backing onto the Wu-Tang fanbase. The Gravediggaz were all over Mtv and in hip-hop magazines. At the time, there was a lot of buzz surrounding the genre and it was believed to be 'the next big thing' considering gangsta rap's popularity was deteriorating quickly and the industry was looking for something new to catch the interest of hip-hop fans.

Ultimately, the whole horrorcore movement was not broadly accepted by the public. It simply did not have mass appeal within the hip-hop community, who saw it more of a cheesy gimmick. The Gravediggaz reached nominal fame, releasing 2 albums with RZA (1 album without), and eventually disappeared. The Flatlinerz released only their debut album before Def Jam pulled the plug due to lack luster album sales.

After that point, the horrorcore genre in general went independent/underground and was predominantly seen on the internet on websites such as MP3.com, which had a category specifically for 'horrorcore.' During this period, there was little to no mainstream attention, with the exception of the "Insane Clown Posse."
In many regards, "Insane Clown Posse" is used as the poster-child for the horrorcore sound in the media. Originally known as "Inner City Posse", ICP was based in Detroit andachieved a fairly successful career in their own right by pressing their album "Carnvial of Carnage" and distributing it locally. Overtime, their fanbase grew and they were eventually signed to a major label. With virtually no radio or TV promotion, they were able to develop a massive fansbase that would later be referred as the "juggalos." Today, ICP's fame is un-deniable with multiple platinum and gold albums, a huge merchandise catalog, and thousands of fans throughout the world.

"Horrorcore is also taken to be a derivative of the word "hardcore" which is an ADJECTIVE not a NOUN."
These days, horrorcore is not always referred to as rap music. The internet is filled with many websites that refer to gothic or dark metal as horrorcore as well. This is by no means incorrect because horror metal music does fall within the means of the horrorcore definition. The dispute of horrorcore being rap or metal is simply in the eyes of the fan. That's why many people refer to it as "horror rap" or "horror metal" to be specific on what type of music it actually is. Horrorcore can be just about ANYTHING, it does not have to be rap. Horrorcore is also taken to be a derivative of the word "hardcore" which is an ADJECTIVE not a NOUN. It's simply a way to describe ANY form of music. Yes it originated with rap, but has since transitioned over into other musical genres.

"Horrorcore is just another medium of conveying horror."
Horrorcore is just another medium of conveying horror. The subject matter, undertones, characters, imagery, or emotions that you would experience watching a horror movie is the same intention of horrorcore music. While many will watch/listen to these forms of horror and not understand it, or simply think it's corny, take horrorcore music for what it is, a form of fictional entertainment.

If you are interested in playing a show that I am booking please contact me at ikky2008@gmail.com or here on myspace.

VERBAL ABUSE Compilation SLOTS: I'm  hosting a compilation cd and pressing up 2000 cds and 5000 flyer's to flood the streets with new raw talent so if you wanna speed up your music career then this is the move to make all for $75 Submissions and I'll mail you out 50 copies. Songs must not be over 4 minutes

Collabs:
Alot of people ask me about collabs so I thought I would just break it down for everyone here.

$150 - For the most part this is the price I charge for verses, I'm not greedy or anything but this seems to be the amount to cover most costs, plus be first in line for collabs(I will get these done ASAP !  Also for this price I will be willing to do a hook on the collab as well.

$100 - Some people just can't afford the top level and you'll still get the top quality but you are behind the $150 verses that are paid before you, and possibly after you ... that's why it's broken down like this.

$75 - This is for you up and coming artist, I know times are hard and I wanna work with anyone I can.  But, for this bargain price you'll still get that 100% quality shit but just don't expect the verse pronto.  I will get to these verses after all the $100, and $150 verses are complete.

Free - There are certain people who I'm down with or I meet and just come at me right and I will do a collab for free.  Either because of mututal friends or just because I feel what they are bringing to Horrorcore/Rap.  After saying this please don't ask for free collabs, if you have to ask ... we probably don't know each other very well.  I'm not trying to be an ass about it but I'm very busy and I really just don't have the time to do free verses for everyone. Time is money !
