Why I like/use Twidder (TWITTER)
dedicated to John
How many Twitter reviews have you read online? I must read 3 or 4 per week. Why? I enjoy social media, & like reading the pulse of what people are doing online. I am a people watcher, mainly to see what impact social networking sites have on our culture.
This blog is for people who are using Twitter, who might be new to it plus a little confused as to what to "do" with it.
I like lists to break things down. Let's go that route - because the organization of lists can clear your head. Sound good?
OK - here is what Twitter IS NOT (my opinion of course)
1.) Twitter is not mySpace or FB. Those sites offer much more detail in the way you can socialize with a certain group of people you befriend. Your forums and groups will always be more intimate and a place to play or have discussion.
2.) Twitter is not blogging. Micro-blogging perhaps. It's instant, short, quick and very sufficient, efficient, clean & concise. You can get so many links to look at or read it can be mind boggeling. People advertise themselves - express themselves - link to news - link to fun stuff. It's endless and facinating and opens up your universe.
3.) Twitter is not a one-stop-shopping store - but it's a hub like a train station. It's a starting point to then go off to more places. It's always claimed that it is a "tool".
OK, so if it is NOT those things above - that opens up a series of more questions, doesn't it?
How do I get to know people?
What's the point of following thousands?
I miss many updates, I can't keep up.
Is everyone just "selling" something - I'm tired of spammers adding me.
Like John I started with Leo Laporte too. :D He is the Peter Pan of all things tech as far as I'm concerned. I also Follow Robert Scoble (he created Friendfeed). My other favs are all the guys from mashable. Mashable is a "must" for all things social networking.
I had never heard of any of these people untill I discovered Twitter. It has opened up a larger more accessible online experience than MySpace. MySpace is limiting.
But that's ok - the way I look at it - is all these sites work together to create your complete experience - like having a total outfit with accessories.
Don't forget the scarf~!
mashable has a complete Twitter section with tips, tricks, links and guides to make Twitter a better experience. mashable is THE most RT (retweet) in Twitter history I believe. RT is like posting someone here with "quotes" - same type of thing.
So, first - start following Pete Cashmore if you're not already doing so.

It is enjoyable to follow celebs or your favorite book author. I have a few and yes, they have thousands that follow and they DON'T normally reply to you. I keep trying. I routinely ask Eddie Izzard to marry me - as far as I know, I'm probably just another stalker to him. Those people use twitter to update their fans - and it's probably fun for them too - they can't possibly respond to everyone. All you can hope for is that once in a while while they read their replies - they might just see "YOUR" tweet and even get enjoyment from it. I guess that's all we can hope for.
Mrsha's TIPS about TWIDDER:
It's all about who you choose to follow that makes it interesting.
Don't worry about the spammers or odd people you have nothing in common with following you.... the spammers get deleted on a daily basis.
I do look at every account that adds (follows me) - I read one page of their updates and read what link they posted in their BIO. If they appear like someone that interests me, I'll follow to give them a chance. I have gotten to know a few people simply in their updates over time and really enjoy them. I may reply a little and this begins a relationship - some of them are superficial and don't go very far. That's ok - don't stress on that part.
I let Twitter be what I want it to be:
1.) A place to get info I'm interesting in.
2.) I use a Twitter client on my phone AND desktop
Tweetdeck
Twittelator PRO (iphone)
If you use a client you can have multi columns (some have multi account capabilities), and use search words or group your people in categories. If you simply use Twitter from the website you are missing an enormous way to get information.
Here's an example of my lists:
1.) myspace friends (people I'm close to, known a long time)
2.) everyone else
3.)keywords: Painter, PSCS4, iphone, PSW, ubuntu, dell mini9
(you get the picture - you read what people are saying about YOUR interests)
4.) an entire column to a special follow (their user name) why? Because Twitter is ongoing and flowing continually - you will NEVER see every tweet - don't stress about that - you will miss things but if there is someone you don't want to miss - make a search column to see all their tweets plus anyone who replies to them. nice huh?
(stalking? It can be..lolz)
Because of Twitter popularity right now there are many third party sites, tools, clients that make it even more fun. Decorate your background. (mine is new)
There are management sites to help you manage followers - it just keeps growing.
You can google those or just follow mashable or Timmy from MySpace. Hi Timmy. :D
Final thoughts:
If Twitter hasn't been fun lately, let me ask you a few questions:
1.) How active are you? You should make updates a few times a day, maybe spread out the times so people "see" you. If you are quiet you won't get much attention.
Also - make occasional posts using hash symbol that people see in twitter search - it does increase your visibility.
search.twitter.com <----
note: The more interesting, quality people out there are worth having on your list because people will look at your list sometimes and then base that info on following you. Go ahead and look at Leo's list if you like top tech guru types.
2.) Have you searched around with keywords on things that interest you? You will see endless junk and accounts that look boring. Don't give up. Read what people post on followfriday - those are people's favs or a reason (or they are selling something)
3.) Are spammers bugging you? Discouraging you? Just forget about it - they weed themselves out - you can't stop it - just ignore. Going private makes no sense unless you are creeped out. Remember if you are private nobody will find you. Is that what you want in social networking?
4.) Is your Tweeting interactive?
Are you posting on Twitpic? (easy linkable photos)
blip.fm? (music sharing) (there are others..just an ex.)
The more you comment on other people's links (some make new tweets which I LOVE)..the more you will have satisfying interaction.
What Twitter IS:
_________________ . yup. You fill it in - it's what YOU make it.
Get out there and reply to a few people that make you laugh... or if they post an amazing photo or link - it opens up new communication.
I feel like I just made a commercial similar to Royal Caribbean Cruises.
ok - " Get out there"...... : D
