(Miles Played Jazz in Florida)Tuesday, December 15, 2009 (12-15) 11:28 PST WASHINGTON, (AP) -- Fifty years after jazz legend Miles Davis recorded "Kind of Blue," the House voted Tuesday to honor the landmark album's contribution to the genre. Davis collaborated on the record with saxophonists John Coltrane and Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, pianists Bill Evans and Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Jimmy Cobb. Rep. John Conyers, a Michigan Democrat who sponsored the measure, said the group "made musical history and changed the artistic landscape of this country and in some ways the world." The resolution recognizing the album's 50th anniversary passed on a 409-0 vote. Columbia Records released the album in August 1959. The original album — only 37 minutes — had a huge impact that extended beyond jazz to other types of music — from rock musicians such as the Allman Brothers and Carlos Santana to minimalist composers like Steve Reich and Philip Glass. Davis, one of the greatest trumpeters in jazz history, died of a stroke in 1991 at age 65. He was renowned for morphing his cool jazz into fusion and experimental sounds that later gave way to jazz funk and hip-hop grooves. Cobb is the only musician from the "Kind of Blue" album who is still alive. The resolution is H.Res.894. January 9, 2010 - 8:00 p.m. - South Florida JAZZ welcomes jazz vocalist KATHY KOSINS who is making her first Broward County appearance with her “Ladies of Cool” show, an homage to the great West Coast jazz vocalists of the early years of modern jazz, Anita O’Day, June Christy, Chris Connor and Julie London. FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – South Florida’s premier modern jazz organization is thrilled to feature a unique jazz artist who has a very special talent for revisiting and reworking the music of earlier eras of the vocal jazz tradition. This concert takes place at the 500-seat Rose & Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center on the Nova Southeastern University campus, 3100 Ray Ferrero, Jr Blvd in Davie 33314. Tickets are $35 ($25 for South Florida JAZZ members and $10 for students at any level with I.D.) and may be purchased from the Broward Center Box Office by calling 954.462.0222 in Broward County; also toll-free at 877-311-SHOW, as well as online at: southfloridajazz.org, the presenting organization’s official Web site. KATHY KOSINS
A Detroit, Michigan native, Kathy Kosins has explored the vocal jazz idiom of the West Coast “cool school,” with particular emphasis on those extraordinary singers of the 1940s and 1950s that were household names to jazz and pop fans alike in that era. Kathy is an accomplished interpreter of jazz, who has a voice and style that shares that intimate and alluring quality found in “The Ladies of Cool.” In addition to her extremely busy touring performance schedule, Kathy is equally in demand as a clinician in collegiate vocal jazz programs throughout the country. Education is a passion with her, but so is bringing fresh interpretations to some remarkable music that resonates with all audiences, especially those who are familiar with these ladies: Anita O’Day – The most prominent female jazz singer not named Billy Holliday, Ella Fitzgerald or Sarah Vaughan, Anita was a pistol. Her career got jump-started in the early 1940s with Gene Krupa’s band, followed by stints with Woody Herman and Stan Kenton before embarking on a solo career. She had a soft, raspy voice and sang with the tonal qualities of an alto saxophone. Her rhythmic feel was propulsive, and thus unique. She could improvise at any tempo. She might have been the dean of the cool school of vocalists, but she still found herself frequently on suspension. June Christy – this warm and smooth-voiced blond, who began singing with big bands at age 13, followed Anita O’Day into the Stan Kenton Orchestra in 1945 where she remained for the better part of seven years. Her style was ultra-cool and sexy. Her inflections made her instantly recognizable. June had a successful solo career, mentored by husband and master saxophonist-arranger, Bob Cooper, and also band leader/arranger Pete Rugolo who was a close collaborator. She is best remembered for her interpretations of “Something Cool” and “Midnight Sun.” Chris Connor – Another attractive blond, Chris was singing with bandleader Claude Thornhill and was discovered by June Christy, who was planning on leaving the Kenton band for a solo career. June recommended her to her boss and Chris spent a year on the band before going off on her own. She enjoyed moderate popularity for years and played the major jazz rooms around the country in addition to recording more than 40 records. Her signature song was “All About Ronnie.” Julie London – A statuesque beauty and pin-up girl, Julie parlayed some acting talent and an intimate, sultry voice into a successful career. She studied acting and music in her teens. After her marriage to actor and producer Jack Webb dissolved, she took up with pianist Bobby Troup who groomed her singing career that paralleled and surpassed her acting efforts. Billboard named her Most Popular Female Singer from 1955 through 1957. She is likely best remembered for her interpretation of the plaintive ballad, “Cry Me A River.” Funding for this organization is provided in part by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Council. This is old-school jazz, the kind most often played on ancient, crackly records. Trombone, horn, banjo, piano and clarinet all combine to produce a rich, rolling Mississippi gumbo of sound, above a driving bass and drums. A rare opportunity to see a Hollywood legend and an all-time great jazz band at the same time. Teach your children well...
Fort Lauderdale, FL – How can a jazz quartet teach math and reading concepts through music? Through a program called JazzSLAM. This fun and interactive program reinforces basic language arts and math concerts through the music of jazz. Students experience how improvisation is similar to writing essays. They learn how "read, think and explain" questions are similar to the "12 bar blues" how narrative essay form is similar to "A-A-B-A" song form; and how persuasive and expository essay forms are similar to the "verse-chorus" song form.
JazzSLAM, the acronym for Jazz Supports Language Arts & Math, is a program that uses students' interest in music to help them understand the inherent underlying structures found also in language arts and math. JazzSLAM was designed by local jazz musician and educator, Mari Mennell-Bell. The program is being presented by the Gold Coast Jazz Society in several local elementary schools from December through May.
Program creator, Mari Mennel-Bell, holds a dual Masters degree in Elementary Education (K-6) and Music Education (K-12) from New York University and a Masters degree in Social Work from Adelphi University. While living in New York City she worked for The Children's Television Workshop as a researcher and as an independent consultant on "Using Music to Teach Reading". When her children were in school in Broward County, she observed their challenges to stay focused on academics and was inspired to create an experiential, hands-on approach to academic skills so she developed a program that makes learning fun through the use of jazz.
Presentations of the JazzSLAM program will occur in the following schools in Broward County:
Sheridan Hills Elementary - Dec 17; Coconut Palm Elementary - Jan. 21; Pembroke Pines Charter East Elementary - Jan. 26 ; Mirror Lake Elementary - Feb 2; Tradewinds Elementary - April 20; Deerfield Beach Elementary - April 27; Westchester Elementary and Norcrest Elementary in May (exact dates TBA).
The Gold Coast Jazz Society, the presenter of this program, is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of jazz music through a mainstage concert series, free community concerts, jazz education programs and other events. Go online www.goldcoastjazz.org for more information about the Gold Coast Jazz Society or call 954-524-0805.
