First of all, thank you.
Thank you for reading this. Thanks for caring enough to log on, drop by and listen. Thank you for coming out to shows, for telling your friends and sending your sibling. Thank you for making a special order for my record at your local record store. Thank you for buying my records on iTunes. Thank you for secretly and illegally downloading my stuff on limewire. (while you don't get quite as much gratitude as the folks who walk the straight and narrow and actually purchase the music, I still love you for listening. One day you'll come around)
Years ago, when I decided that music was the way that I wanted to live and the way that I wanted to earn a living. I made the decision that I would rather do what I love, put everything that I possibly could into it and do it well. At that point, I had an truck that barely ran, I lived in a garage and rarely had a positive balance in my bank account. I wasn't sure what music would bring me in terms of a living and I didn't care. It was just that I wanted my life to be immersed in it and surrounded by it.
I wasn't sure if it would be a big fat record deal and a house in the hills or if I would spend my days busking for change on a subway platform. The one thing that I have always been sure of is that the connection that music creates between people was something that I always wanted to be a part of. I was sure of it years ago in New York City, singing at the top of my lungs on the subway platform at 116th and Broadway as I caught the expression of gratitude in the eyes of a tired soul boarding the train headed uptown after a long day. And I am sure of it nowadays standing on a stage...weather it is a crowd of 20 or 2000, the connective energy that comes from an audience restores my faith in humanity and the beautiful miracle of our existence every single time I feel it.
Wow...I sound like a freaky hippie....sorry, I digress.
Back to the gratitude. I write this from 35,000 feet, on flight bound for home after 38 days on the road, on tour with Matt Duke and Tony Lucca for all of the dates and the addition of Roy Jay for the last ten days.
Every time that I head out on the road, I find myself saying, 'thank you for making this an amazing tour'. Every time I find that things are growing in each city...in some cases by leaps and bounds and in some cases, by tiny little baby steps. In all aspects though, it all seems to be going in the right direction.
Here's the most amazing part of all of it though... It's you. In every city I play in, I see you, I hear you, I get to feel your joy and your pain...sometimes directly, because you care enough to share it with me and sometimes just by your very presence. I feel so grateful, blessed, lucky...whatever you want to call it...for all of it. For your support, for your hugs, your appreciation. The connection is everything. You are family and I want you to know that years ago, when I envisioned my life and career in music, I could never have imagined that it all would feel this good.
So thanks for that.
This was another amazing tour that would not have been so, without you.
I also feel compelled to thank my tour mates: Tony Lucca, Matt Duke and Roy Jay. Their talent, graciousness and all around cool are a real inspiration. Check them all out...you will be glad you did.
And so, I return to Los Angeles. More big musical things are coming up. Perhaps the biggest live show that I have played in some time is coming up on October 13th at the Troubadour. I have wanted to play the Troubadour since I was 16 years old. This will be the first time that I have ever played there, and I am actually headlining with an unbelievable musical cast of characters including, Chris Seefried, Matt DelVecchio, Charlie Gillingham and David Immergluck (of Counting Crows), Dave Gibbs and special guests, ambeR Rubarth, Shane Alexander and Justine Bennett. I almost have to pinch myself to keep believing that this bill is actually happening. With your help spreading the word, we might have a shot of selling out the room and making it a lifelong dream fulfilled. I promise that you will have a great time and that I will give you everything I have...
Hopefully you know now, that when I say 'thanks', just how much I really mean it.

This past Saturday, we (and by we, I mean: Joe Purdy, Chris Seefriend, Meiko, Joey Ryan, Garrison Starr, Matty D, Frederik, Althea Jean and Monica Behan with crazy special guest, Joe Bouchard (the founding member of Blue Oyster Cult!!!)) had just about the best time ever at Rock for the River 6. Over 400 people showed up at the Clayton Opera House and in addition to a night of music, old friends and laughs, the concert raised almost $11,000 for Save the River.
Soon, we should have pictures and recordings from the event.
In the meantime, check out the Save the River website for more about the River and Rock for the River: www.savetheriver.org
This is really good news considering the timing. Save the River protects the delicately balanced environmental and socioeconomic interests of the 1000 Islands region of the St. Lawrence River in upstate NY. If you've never been before, hop online and check the place out. Or better yet, make your way up here and see it with your own two eyes. I've been around to a lot of amazing places but I've never been to a place as beautiful and unique as here.
So, considering this, i shocked to become aware of a new organization that seeks to maximize the St Lawrence Seaway shipping route at all costs. When we were kids, my friends and I used to joke around about the possibility of an anti-environmental organization opposed to Save the River and how it would be called, 'PAVE the River'.
I guess that you really need to be careful about what you joke about. Apparently, there is a new organization that's all amped about increased shipping, called 'Highway H2O'. Their website features a body of water being covered in pavement. They would like to see the shipping capacity of the St. Lawrence Seaway to be doubled in the immediately future. This ambition fails to account for the fact that the tolerances for large freighters passing the St. Lawrence are very, very small. The biggest ships that pass through the Seaway filled with oil, gas and various other unstable materials, do so sometimes with just a few feet between the bottoms of the vessels and the river floor. The smallest miscalculation could result in catastrophic consequences. Check out the www.hwyh2o.com website...they're one sided approach to the balance between ecology and commerce is quite disturbing. If you can, donate to Save the River and hopefully, together, we can keep the delicate balance in check. It's not to say that the St. Lawrence should not be used for shipping, it just needs to happen responsibly.
See you out there.

I drove ten hours through rain, hail and tornados yesterday...
It really allowed quite an opportunity not only to chill and reflect, but also gave me a chance to reminisce as my entire life flashed before my eyes several times - like when emergency warnings came on the radio of NPR...and when I drove through a foot and a half of water on I 25...and when hail pellets the size of marbles piled up on the side of the road.
But...I made it. The skies are clear. 500 more miles and I'm on a bus and I won't have to drive for a while.
Today's kind of a big day...my new EP, 'all the stars in copenhagen' is out now on iTunes. It was fun little recording to make...first in Copenhagen, then in Berlin and finished up in LA with David Immergluck and Seth Atkins Horan. It's less than $5 too...so it's like a 'recession buster special'!
Tomorrow, I get on the bus with Joey Ryan, Gabe Dixon and Roy Jay. We'll be playing ten shows up the east coast, starting tomorrow night in Atlanta at Eddie's Attic. Here's the full summer schedule. Dates are being added all the time, so keep an eye out if you don't see your city on there.

Current mood: giddy
Category: Romance and Relationships
Hiya!
If you're in Southern California, I'm hoping that I get to see you tonight!
I'll be sitting in with Tristan Prettyman at 9pm and then, the boys and I hit at 10pm sharp...at:
Hotel Cafe 1623.5 Cahuenga Blvd Hollywood, Baby
also - just uploaded another track from the forthcoming EP for you to sample!
It's called 'Rainiest September'. Back in the fall, I supposed to play a song at my sister-in-law's wedding. I was honored that she asked me, but she didn't give me a whole lot of direction. She suggested, 'Sweet Talking Lover' but when I explained that the song was actually 'Sweet Talking Liar' and was the farthest thing from a love song, we both decided that it was probably not the best choice for the evening.
The wedding was in Connecticut and was to take place outside on the grounds of this old Colonial farmhouse museum. On paper, it all looked great - beautiful late September foliage in New England. But unfortunately, it rained for almost the entire month of September...in fact, that month turned out to be the wettest September on record in the last 100 or so years.
The rehearsal dinner the night before the wedding was really beautiful, and thankfully indoors while the liquid onslaught continued outside. Emotions ran hi and everything was going so well, that we all expected to wake the next morning and find that the weather had miraculously lifted.
So the morning came...
...and along with came another 3 inches of rain overnight complete with thunder and lightning. The grounds were a swamp, the band showed up and threatened that they could play...even under the tent, because there was so much water. I had no idea what I could play for this lovely couple that would lighten the mood.
So...right before I put my suit on for the ceremony, I sat down with my old 1960 student model Gibson to check and see if there were any songs hiding in it. Lo and behold, there was. The lyrics are pretty much the story of the weekend...word for word. I finished up the song just in time to get dressed and get to the church on time.
After the ceremony, but before the reception, I caught up with the band, 'Joey Leone and the High Society' - one of the finest bands (wedding or otherwise, in all the land) and showed them the song. I thought it might be cool if the horns came in on the bridge and they were amenable.
So late that night, towards the end of the reception, I went for it. I thanked everyone for coming to 'our first rehearsal of the song'. The band joined in halfway through and the song came off miraculously...just like the wedding, in spite of the weather.
Later on in the fall, I got the chance to record it. in Copenhagen with Frederik (my drummer) and his amazing Danish musician friends, Lars, Soren and Jesper. We just played it live, all together. When I got back to LA, Joey Ryan and Chris Seefried put some angelic background vocals on it and Seth Atkins Horan mixed up nice and pretty.
So here it is...enjoy:)

Freddy and I are in the midst of the most grueling leg of the tour. We had an hour and a half of sleep last night but still everything is still just fine.
we just played a show at st olaf at the Lion's pause, a great big room with fantastic sound. We opened for my friend Ari Herstand and his live DVD recording.
Traveling with Laswell and Brandon has been an absolute joy both onstage and off. Freddy and I both feel like we have new friends for life in both of them. We have been laughing non stop...so much fun, it shouldn't be legal. wait a second...actually a lot of our antics probably aren't. oh well.
today when i got of the plane in minneapolis, there was an arch made of balloons with two people that were apparently half deaf underneath it singing 'lean on me'. I was pretty sure that I was hallucinating but my Danish traveling companion assured me that this was really happening. A traditional minnesotan viking welcome, I guess.
time to go sign cds at the merch table. hope to see you this week in cleveland, columbus, chicago, des moines or lawrence, kansas...
love you guys ' nash

Sweet sweet barbeque
Another tour is off and running. Brave souls, Frederik and Brandon endured winter weather and 1700 miles to bring the tour van from LA to Kansas City. My flight touched down just in time to get me to soundcheck and find Greg Laswell parked at the bar with a jack and coke that looked so delicious I had to order one for myself.
Yesterday was a day of firsts. It was the first time that I have ever been to Kansas City and the first time that I ever played there. Also for the first time, I heard Rosi Golan sing and my jaw dropped. She and her tourmate Jake Phillips sound rediculously amazing together.
Laswell and Brandon are at the top of their game too. The sound of the soaring epic sadness that they create could fill a stadium.
This morning we had BBQ for breakfast at place called, ' Oklahoma Joe's' on the Kansas side of town.
I'm full, happy and I can't wait for tonights show in st louis. Greg and Brandon drove through the night so they could play on tv this morning. A bright and cheerful young lass named Max is driving us there now.
We'll be there soon.
Life is good. See you soon.

Current mood: inquisitive
I just drove back from Salt Lake to LA yesterday. It's a 700 mile drive.
It's good to be back home but I have this observation and complaint to make about california drivers.
Everywhere else in the country, people seem to understand that on the freeway, the rule (and the law) is to drive in the right lane. The left lane is intended for passing only.
Even driving the congested highways in and around NYC, Chicago and Denver, people seem to understand and adhere to this.
Every single time I drive back to LA, I find my blood pressure rising about halfway past Vegas when these left lane lurkers start appearing.
I will be cruising along and 78 mph only to get road blocked by some clueless dipshit hanging out in the left lane next to a tractor trailer on his right...without fail! They'll hang out there in the left lane with several cars backed up behind them until finally the opportunity for cars to thread the needle on the right comes up and eventually sneak by. All the while, they are totally oblivious to the traffic jam that they have created.
This seems to be something that Californians, especially around Los Angeles, like to do.
So please, don't be left lane lurker. It's lame.
Other than that, Los Angeles, I love you dearly.

ps - new song up...'everything'. (well...it's an old song...but a nice new recording)

Here's a video of 'Sweet Talking Liar' live from the TAlas Theatre in DC last week. It was so great to be there playing music with my friends...even better that Ehud Lazin and his crew caught the whole thing for posterity!

America awake now...it's time to hit the road. I just got back from DC, where I played two shows with Low Stars and Counting Crows members, Charlie and Immi. It was fantastic and surreal to be in the midst of such a positive sea change and to have the opportunity to share music with so many. Sometimes when I step and think about it, I'd seems almost insane for so many to be putting so much faith, so much pressure and so much hope on a single man... But then Obama speaks, and we listen. We cry. We act. We are inspired and suddenly, so many, who were once jaded and emotionally removed, are again motivated and emotionally connected to the entity that is the United States of America. It's not just you and me - the general populace. It's leaders, trend setters and influential people in so many different venues with the same reaction. We are awake now and ready to roll up our sleeves and dig in to the work ahead. It's a good time to be starting just about two solid months on the road. I am inspired and motivated. Let's rock! 3 Hour Tour! This time it's happening on Sunday February 15th for a special Valentines Day edition. If you live in Southern California, and you have never been, you need to come. Here's the basic formula: a great big boat + a crazy amazing lineup of music + fun people + booze + delicious eats = outrageous good time. Go to http://www.myspace.com/the3hourtour for more information. Get your tickets by emailing: tickets@3hourtour.com: Thanks! There is long list of shows ahead. It means so much and makes such a huge difference when you guys spread the word to not only your friends in your own city but your friends in other places around the country. Thank you so much for your help! It will be great to see you and I can't wait for you to hear my traveling companions, Joey Ryan (1.26-2.5) and Greg Laswell (2.17-3.11). They are both the straight dope. The Things You Think You Need at Barnes and Noble: The record is scheduled to be in the listening stations at Barnes and Noble for another few weeks. With your help, it might stick around even longer. Grab a physical copy with liner notes, lyrics and family pictures! You can grab it online too if you like:) Barnes and Noble A new song/ a new EP: The new EP is well on it's way to completion and will be releases later this spring.
