Toto, I don't think we're in the backwoods anymore, thanks to an all-out, 3D, high tech anomaly of a country concert, complete with lighted stairs, itty-bitty plasma televisions, an enormous movie screen and even pink, red and blue paisley guitars.

Even Carrie Underwood contributed to the evening of country anomalies with a vocally raucous performance of Guns 'N Roses' "Sweet Child O' Mine."

It definitely was time well wasted Friday night at Kay Yeager Coliseum - a country-imbued hit machine if you ever heard one, courtesy of Brad Paisley, Underwood and the lagniappe of the evening, Jake Owen.

Too bad the acoustics for Underwood's set sounded like AM radio reception on a dirt road in the middle of Nowhere, Texas.

Owen's quick 20-minute opening set benefited from that dark, chocolatey voice of his. With gravy-coated country charisma, he submitted hits like "Yee Haw" and "The Bad in Me."

Underwood did her own damage at the coliseum Friday night, kicking the 5,000-or-so audience into a frenzy.

She's definitely a vocal powerhouse.

Just in case you get the impression that Underwood is just a country sweetheart, she changes your mind quickly, kicking it into gear mid-set with an unexpected high-octane version of "Sweet Child O' Mine." She slammed down the high notes with ease.

Underwood delivered all the hits from her album, "Some Hearts," including the title track, along with "Jesus Take the Wheel" and the saucy female empowerment tune, "Because He Cheats."

The downside to Underwood's portion of the concert was the poor acoustics, and her voice was drowned out at times. And with such vocal demands on just about every one of her songs, Underwood's voice started to fade in the end.

As for Brad Paisley, he went all out with a show with more bells and whistles than the Starship Enterprise. His videos played in the background, a "video uplink" took us to Little Jimmy Dickens at the Grand Ole Opry.

But visual distractions aside - sometimes a little too many visual distractions - Paisley delivered hit after hit with crisp acoustics. Plus, his band didn't want any for musicianship, particularly the fiddle player and the drummer, who was born and raised in Wichita Falls (though I couldn't hear his name). Paisley himself pounded out a mean electric guitar solo.

He turned in everything from "Celebrity" to "Mud on the Tires," "waah, waah, wahh," "She's Everything," "Whiskey Lullaby" and "Easy Money."

He and the band also impressed the crowds with a "How Fast Can We Play?" section, in which they, well, played super-fast to animation by Paisley himself.

The best thing about a Paisley show, besides all the visual excess, is the variety. Going to a Paisley concert is like going to a shaken and stirred country smorgasbord. He turns in traditional, straight-up two-steppers and tongue-in-cheek tunes just for a little fun, and introspective tunes, too.

Yep, Toto, we definitely weren't in the backwoods anymore.

November 18, 2006 - Saturday

Carrie Underwood stepped out of her $850,000 red carpet gown into another show stopping number to perform "Before He Cheats." Is Carrie old enough to be singing about whiskey and being drunk? And is she old enough to be exposing that much leg? Stormy thought she might have to take a Louisville Slugger to the guys on the front row; maybe next time they'll think before they peek! Now, about those legs--they're just a painful reminder that Stormy has socks older than Carrie. The American Idol is on her way to becoming a major country star after walking off with the coveted Horizon Award and Female Vocalist of the Year Awards. At least she got her money's worth out of that dress! Well, for another $250,000, she probably could have won Male Vocalist of the Year, too!

Carrie Underwood to Headline Tenth Anniversary of The Salvation Army Red Kettle Kickoff Concert During Dallas Cowboys Thanksgiving Day Game Halftime Show
Friday November 17, 8:00 am ET
Live Performance to Launch 115-year-old Fundraising Campaign

IRVING, Texas, Nov. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Country music superstar Carrie Underwood will be the featured performer for the tenth anniversary of the live, nationally televised Dallas Cowboys Thanksgiving Day halftime show to officially kick off the annual Salvation Army 2006 Red Kettle Christmas fundraising campaign, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones announced today.

Underwood, the American Idol winner, who was recently named Female Vocalist of the Year at the 2006 Country Music Association (CMA) Awards, will perform songs from her quadruple-platinum selling debut album, Some Hearts, which contains three #1 country singles. Since Carrie Underwood was named the 2005 American Idol winner, she has collected numerous awards including two wins at the CMA Awards and nominations at the upcoming American Music Awards and People's Choice Awards. For the tenth consecutive year, the Red Kettle campaign will be launched as part of a special live concert at Texas Stadium during the Cowboys' traditional holiday game. This year, the Cowboys play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the game will be televised nationally on the Fox Network beginning at 3:15 CST, Thursday, November 23.

"I am so glad to have the opportunity to spend Thanksgiving in Dallas this year," said Ms. Underwood. "My family and I have been spectators several times in the past, and now I am thrilled to be performing at halftime this year! I look forward to teaming up with The Salvation Army and the Dallas Cowboys for a great day. See you on the 23rd."

"Our halftime celebration at Texas Stadium has become a very unique and visible part of the family holiday tradition that is Thanksgiving in America," said Jones, the Cowboys' owner and general manager. "There's not a better way to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the Red Kettle Kickoff than having all of us who support the special work of The Salvation Army know that our collective efforts during the past decade will result in the one billionth dollar dropped in a kettle some place in America this Christmas season."

Since 1997, the nationally televised Cowboys Thanksgiving Day game halftime show has officially launched the Red Kettle Christmas Campaign at the national level. During this time period, the campaign has raised nearly $900 million to help more than 335 million people in communities nationwide. Previous halftime performers have included Sheryl Crow, Destiny's Child, Toby Keith, LeAnn Rimes, Creed, Jessica Simpson, Billy Gillman, Clint Black, Randy Travis and Reba McEntire.

As part of the celebration, Ms. Underwood and Mr. Jones will be among the first to make donations to the Red Kettles, which help to raise money for holiday toys, coats, rental and utility assistance, and many other Salvation Army social services provided throughout the year.

"We continually see increased demand for our services and the annual Red Kettle Campaign is a major reason why we are able to provide assistance to those in need in over 5,000 communities nationwide," said Commissioner Israel L. Gaither, National Commander of The Salvation Army. "We have been privileged over the years to have The Dallas Cowboys allow us this tremendous national forum, and we are pleased that Carrie Underwood has agreed to help us kick off the 2006 campaign."

From its humble beginnings as a fundraiser started by a Salvation Army captain in San Francisco in 1891, the Red Kettle Campaign has grown into one of the most recognizable and important charitable campaigns in the United States. As part of the campaign, more than 25,000 Salvation Army volunteers fan out across the country to ring bells and solicit spare change donations to the iconic red kettles from holiday shoppers. In 2005, the campaign raised a record $111 million nationwide, with nickels, dimes, quarters and dollars (and the occasional diamond ring or gold tooth) all being returned to help those in the communities where they were raised. Last year, the funds helped The Salvation Army to provide assistance to more than 31 million Americans in need.
