What if a blind could "ear" an house.
Architecture and Music have a lot of thing in common.
One give emotion to the eyes, one give emotion to the ear, all 2 give emotion for the mind.
We can see materials as sound, and spaces like beat.
Every materials have is own importance, presence. They can express cold or heat, tranquillity or nervousness. Like sound.
Wood tipically is a heat material, it give to the ambience something that i could say confortable. His color, his consistence, his smell. Wood is nature, we are nature.
Can we associate wood to sin wave.
The sound of sine wave is relaxing, like wood.
Sine wave is natural, analogic, real.
Texture of wood could be associated to an LFO in random, to give the sound an unique and irregular color, like every piece of wood.
Concrete is a "cold" material, his presence into an Architecture is important. It could overhang you, and you can do nothing. Try to destroy a wall of concrete.
Anyway, concrete is made with natural material, and also, to make a wall of concrete we have to use wood to give him the shape (usually). When the the concrete is ready and the wood quitted, we can see the texture of wood "printed" on the wall, with all the construcion line of the wood box.
This try to give life to concrete.
He want to be wood but he can' t.
Concrete could be associated to Triangular Wave.
Triangular wave impose his presence with his sound so...triangular. You could feel that there' s somenthing strange in that sound, is not alone, he have more than one dimension.
We can create the texture of concrete with a square LFO. This, because as i said before, concrete get the wood texture and we can see also the regular interstice between the wood that made the box.
Other material like steel, brick or other could be associated or created, depending your own decision, or depending from what you want to show.
You could use Triangular wave for wood if in the space you' re rappresenting wood is a material that look "strange" in the ambiance.
Music as Architecture is free from everything. You gives sense to thing.
Spaces as beat.
Architecture is made of sequence, modules, empty space and full space.
Music is made of sequence, loop, pause and riff.
Take a long corridor with a wall on the left and columns on the right.
Imagine it in prospect.
The wall could be a long sound all with the same pitch, and the column could be the beat as a kick. So we get a carpet sound with a straight beat. Kick could be filtered if the column are not in contrast with wall, or could be heavy if the colum are in contrast.
All those thing have to be proportionated. We have to decide a proportion between meters and beat. Ex: 1 meter equals to a 1 loop in 4/4. We can increase o diminish the value. It depends from the precision we want to get.
Or time could be equals to meter. Ex: we want to show a 22 meters wall, so our song could be long 22 second.
Take a prospect of an house. Associate every part of this house (wall, window, door etc) to a sound.
Now redraw the prospect using the automation of the value of the sound you' ve choosen. Ex: filter, resonance, volume, etc. You have to play with, automation and note on-off.
Let' s decide that meters = second.
First thing is to draw the wall in prospect. We can associate height, with eventual variation, to filter cutoff. The begin of the wall will be the begin of the sound, so a note on. End of the wall will be..note off.
Remember, we have to follow the prospect from left to right.
Now we have to pose the window, door etc. So look to our prospect and draw a note where the window or the door begin. Height of our element from the floor could be the note pitch. Height of the element, could be the volume or filter resonance or cutoff.
We can decide to change the parameters or the assigned value, depending what and how we want to show.
What we get is the transposition of an house in a song.
