So the guys decide they want to tour. The best way to get shows is to put something out. Seeing as the difference in price between printing up a single and an LP is negligible they opt for an LP. So songs are spewed forth and a studio found - Bill Day in his garage just north of SD. The first album, "Of Thick Tum", is recorded in a couple days in march of '92. This is where the 2nd and 3rd albums, "Spasm Smash XXXOXoxox ox & Ass" and "Godspeed the Punchline" would be recorded as well. Glen manages to get hundreds of crappy albums from Off the Record in SD. The store couldn't sell them and they were taking up space. So now they don't have to buy sleeves. So while the vinyl is being printed up the boys begin transforming the old sleeves into dazzling trumans product. This is done by means of spray paint, glue, photocopies and lots of crayons. Of course, there were piles of old vinyl all over the house from the emptied sleeves. These would be used for hallway battles. This consisted of two opponents, placed at either end of a long hallway, flinging records at each other. The best tactic was to use one vinyl as a shield in one hand while flinging away with the other hand. Many a knee would be split. The sparkling new sleeves would be filled with whatever weird things would fit: X-rays, pages from Glen's military manuals, photos, strange fliers, kevin's dreadlocks... The first fifty handmade albums are sent to Cargo records in SD for distribution. Somehow, a guy at Cargo has the brilliant idea to send a few of them to Cargo in the UK. Then someone in Cargo Uk sends one to John Peel. John Peel, after a long day at home listening to tons of albums decides to put one last album on before going to sleep. It's Of Thick Tum. He loves it. He promptly plays it in its entirety on his next radio show and decides to call the boys for a live phone interview as well. Trumans has no idea what this will mean...

Thanks Kent for recalling me to my task... The Onion Pigs were buddies who lived in LA. Our first times playing out of our garage were at their place. We'd go up for the weekend and jam with them in their living room. It was in that room we got the name Trumans Water. Our drummer, Jeff Jones, came up with it (he would later go on to play in a band in Albuquerque, NM called "Scared of Chaka" - a name he came up with as well). We had a set list of the few songs we had written on the back of a business card. The card was for a mechanic named Thurman Swayner. The card got knocked around on the floor during a jam session and afterwards Jeff picked it up and said, "trumans water, what's this?" He was a little tipsy so it came out slurred like a drooling yak. We all had a good laugh and decided that would be our name (notice, no apostrophe!). At that point we were changing our name daily. A couple I can still remember were Oyster Brain and Debbie Gibson's Butt... There were a whole slew of them though that I can no longer recall... So, at the Onion Pigs' place we played our first outdoor show in their front yard. I cant' recall the chronology exactly but it might have even been our first gig. Trumans decided we'd all wear sweaters. An experiment we would never repeat due to the intense heat they generated. This led to the Onion Pigs calling us Trumans Sweater whenever they got the chance. The Onion Pigs rocked the place and then, I believe, there was supposed to be another band that was headlining but, I think, the cops came and said we had to stop the music. The next day, while walking out to the car, something strange happened. I had the keys to the car in my hand as I walked out. I unlocked the door on the passenger side, then walked around to the driver's side. When I raised my hand to unlock the door the keys were gone. I was astounded. I retraced my steps and still couldn't find the keys. We all searched for hours on the ground around the car. They never turned up. We had to drive in another car down to San Diego, get the spare keys, then drive back up to be able to drive back down again. Somehow they just disappeared in my hand. I never understood what happened there.

Glen proves to be a great motivator and we start writing frenetically. Our first non-party gig follows. We drive out to escondido, ca to a little coffee shop. I can't recall the name right now, I think I said it was the texas teahouse but that was actually in SD and was our second show... Anyway, we play the show with Heavy Vegetable and Powerdresser. The beginning of a relationship that would last for the duration of our SD years. Glen is the front man. No guitar at this point. He sets up a makeshift drum set at the front of the stage and proceeds to slap it around ruthlessly. It falls apart right away and he starts flopping all over the place and squeeling. The owner of the shop is appalled and chucks us out. We all have a great laugh out front in the parking lot and decide we'll have to do it again with the other bands, but somewhere else. We also decide that Glen must have a guitar on him to anchor him down a bit....

A little info for y'all. Looks like we're doing the HALLELUWAH Festival in Portland, Or. It's the 1st-3rd of september '06. I dunno what day we're playin yet. But it looks pretty amazing. Artists include (I dunno who's confirmed yet): sun city girls, tara jane oâneil, stephen malkmus, holy sons, vashti bunyan, coco rosie, panther, grails, old time relijun, damo suzuki, deerhoof, calvin johnson, microphones, mel brown and many more...
Old Time Relijun cancelled so they won't be with us. Bummer...
And don't look on the website for tour info right now cuz I can't do anything to it while in the states. I'll update it when I get back home. I know, a lot of good that does for the tour but, hey, we gotta make do....

Said noise quickly provokes neighborhood anger and the police are often called out. The boys become good friends with the cops seeing as they are polite and always manage to finish practicing before the cops show up. The problem of a singer arrises. No one wants to sing. Kevin gets designated to sing since he's playing bass and that's supposedly the "easy" instrument. But since kevin has never played an instrument in his life singing and playing is quite impossible. He refuses. A couple housemates sit in on practices to see if they can pull it off. They can't. The boys decide to put an add in the local paper for a singer, brains optional. Two people answer said add. A sixteen year old girl who is dropped off by her dad (who waits outside in the car scowling), and a guy named Glen who just got kicked out of Annapolis military academy. The girl impresses the guys but when it's mentioned that they'd probably be going up to LA from time to time to play shows (hopefully) and stay the night with friends the girl says her dad wouldn't let her do that. She says she'd go anyways. Not wanting to get arrested for kidnapping or attacked by the girls father the guys decide to dismiss her. So Glen is in, even though he scares the guys a little with his army hairdo, big muscles and 5am ocean-swimming invitations... He can sing and play guitar as well which is a plus. The guys start writing their own songs and stop playing covers by The Stooges, Nirvana, The Monkees, Rocket From the Crypt and others....

Kirk Branstetter finds himself in college in San Diego. To battle boredom of scholastic life Kirk asks for a guitar for his birthday. Lucky him, lil bro Kevin in his last year in high school in Orange County happens to be seeing a girl who's dad is one-third owner of Fender. She happily scores him a US Strat and a nice combo amp for a few ducats. Kirk has a happy birthday and begins to learn how to play said instrument. Kevin graduates and escapes from OC to San Diego. Moves in with Kirk and his roommates in a house next to SDSU. One roommate, Jeff Jones, plays around on the drums. Kevin decides that all he needs is a bass and amp and they've got a trio. He slinks back up to OC to ask his Fender connection for a bass and an amp. He gets a sweet fender jazz bass and a BXR400 amp head with a two 15" speaker cab for a pittance. He's stoked. The immediate (and far flung) neighbors of the college area are certainly less stoked. The noise begins....
