Brent Tactic from Kansas City Interviews The Egyptian Lover

Brent Tactic: There are definitely dance music fans in the area that know who you are and are excited about this show, but give me a little introduction of yourself for those that might be unfamiliar with you.

The Egyptian Lover: I started out as a DJ in Los Angeles back in 1980 and have been DJing ever since. I joined up with a dance promotion team called Uncle Jamm's Army that gave dances for or 10,000 party people in the L.A. Sports Arena. I became L.A.'s best DJ and that's how I began. I soon started bringing my 808 Drum Machine to the parties and rock it even more. Then came making records and that was that. "Egypt, Egypt" was an instant success. I have been doing concerts ever since and over 25 years later I am still rockin' it.

How was your experience at the Lawrence show opening for M.I.A. back in May and is this your first real trip to the Kansas City area?

I opened up for M.I.A. as requested by her. She is a big fan of old school and my music. I loved her show and did many gigs with her. I did a show every day and it was hard to remember where I was all the time. What I do remember was many young music lovers enjoying my set and loving that old school beat. The 808 was the best, it's timeless! So Kansas City, here I come. This time doing my full show with Jamie Jupiter and we are gonna rock it!

You're one of the biggest and most accomplished names in the history of electro (electro hop, etc)...what got you into making music back in the day and who are some of your influences?

Being a well-known DJ I had to make a record to please my fans. It was a natural next step for me. I had many fellow DJs following my footsteps: Dr. Dre, Arabian Prince, Snake Puppy from L.A. Dream Team, Unknown DJ, The Glove and many others.

There seems to be a bit of a resurgence in electro music, with a number of producers and DJs incorporating elements into their music. What are your thoughts on the current state of "electro" and where do see your style(s) of music going in the future?

I have noticed the old school/electro comeback. Many producers love that style of music and electro is pure dance music. Everyone loves to dance, so this is why electro and old school is still so very popular. Many producers love that Egyptian Lover style music and when they get a chance to do something, they do it. I'm loving it because it gives me another chance to capture a new generation of party people with my sexy style and turntable talent. I will always make this style of music because it is what I love, and I will always be true to myself.

Speaking of the future, I saw you did a collaboration with Jimmy Edgar a couple years back. Who's making noise right now that you respect and who could you see yourself working with?

M.I.A. is on top of my list, Jimmy Edgar and many undiscovered artists. I listen to these new cats all the time on Myspace and many have a great future ahead of them.

You're a performer who encompasses all aspects of a DJ/performer show: DJing, beatmaking, rapping, call & response, dance moves, etc. What does Kansas City have to look forward to on the 23rd?

Just as my song says, "What is a D.J. if he can't scratch?/ What is a M.C. if he can't rap?/ What is a beat without a live clap?/ Well I can do it all baby, just like that!"

What should we look at for from Egyptian Lover in the immediate and distant future?

In 2009 it will be Egyptian Empire Records' 25th Anniversary and I will be releasing a new 12" single every month. I will be doing some re-mix work for some labels and some collabs as well. 2009 will be the busiest year ever for Egyptian Lover. Get ready to dance.

I have been doing concerts and clubs a very very long time and I must say the party people that come to my shows are true Old School and Electro Fans. I never thought when I first bought my 808 drum machine that people would scream so loud for a pure 808 Electro beat. That makes what I do all worth it. The last couple of party’s I have done I picked up the 808 and showed it to the crowed while playing it. Seeing it being played live, they went wild. I Love being on stage doing this for people that love it. It is always good to see true Fans of my music. Thank you for coming to my Gigs and I hope to see you again soon.

I started out as a D.J. in the late 70's playing all the hot Soul and R&B cuts. Then came Rapper's Delight and it changed my way of thinking. My mix tapes started selling more and more everytime I would put Rapper's Delight on it. And then came Super Rhymes!!! WOW! This is a nice rap. So I took the style of Super Rhymes and Sugarhill Gang and I made a rap up and sung it to Bounce, Rock, Skate, Roll Instrumental. I sold sooooo many mixed tapes. Then came Kurtis Blow and man I was in Rap heaven. Grand Master Flash and all the world loved rap. Later that year in 1981 I heard Planet Rock and knew that it was numbers but with more Bass. I thought wow, that is a nice beat. How did they get the drummer to do that beat? Then a friend of mine (Africa Islam) Told me it was a drum machine. I had to have one. BOOM!!! There it was....The 808! The first thing I did was program Planet Rock. SOLD! I took it home. I programmed all that night into the next and into the weekend where I had to D.J. at an Uncle Jam's Army Dance. It was going to be 2,000 Party People there and I was ready. When I played Planet Rock the people went crazy because I mixed it so well. I even played it backwards to hear the strings in a differant way. But when I played the 808 Drum Machine the crowd lost it's mind. No Music just drums...It was a sight to see. I changed the Beat from Planet Rock style to my Beast Beat style and the crowd went more into a frenzy. That 808 Rocked the house for 30 minutes until Roger (Uncle Jam) came to the D.J. Booth and asked what record is that? and saw it was just a drum machine. The next dance, He brought am SH 101 Keyboard and Uncle Jam's Army went LIVE! The Crowd Lost it's mind again. This time with 10,000 Party People there. They all called the radio station and requested Uncle Jam's Army's song before we even had recorded it yet. "Yes, Yes,Yes" was a West Coast Hit. So we went to the studio and recorded it. Also we recorded "Dial-A-Freak" and a week later I recorded "Egypt Egypt" Fresh out of an Uncle Jam's Army Dance with my mind on 10,000 people dancing, I took my best ideas from the party and created Egypt Egypt. This was a huge record on the West Coast. Then it spread down to Miami, then to Detroit, then to New York, then to the South, then to Europe then all over the world. It was a great "RAP" record. But then came along a lot of simular styles and songs like Surgury from Dr Dre and Pretty Tony, and L.A. Dream Team, and so many groups on McCola Records where I pressed my record. Everybody started making records. A copany out of New York wanted to do a compulation called Electro and put some of my songs on them, I was like cool! It's New York. That started eveyone calling my style "Electro" an electronic rap. Today on the west coast they call my music "Old School" because it was one of the first. I call it Dance Music. But whatever you call it, Thank you for listening for soooooo long. I Love my Electro, Old School, Hip Hop, Rap Fans all over the world. My style is for you. Now Dance!

I love good music. I love the kind of music that makes you wanna get up and dance. The kind of music that you remember years and years from now. Uptempo fast songs 128 bpm (beats per minute) Like "Planet Rock", "And the beat goes on", "Electric Kindom", "When I hear Music", and of course "Egypt, Egypt". It just makes the dance floor packed with party people sweating and moving like nothing else. This is why I have made another record with that uptempo, Old School, Electro, True Egyptian Lover type music. For the party people that like to dance to good music.

I've been doing the music thing since High School, Making mixed tapes before there was such a thing as "Mixed Tapes" doing raps with Snake Puppy before Uncle Jams Army and L.A. Dream Team. We use to sell the tapes at school in the San Fernando Valley and in Long Beach at a little Record Store. We sold alot of tapes. I made about 10 differant tapes with Snake on 1 or 2 of them. Then I joined Uncle Jams Army and D.J.'d about a year before I got them to record a 12" record "Dial-a-Freak" b/w "Yes, Yes, Yes" which is the song we played Live at our Dances at places like The L.A. Sports Arena with 10,000 party people. The 808 drum machine was like Heaven to there ears. The sound was so alive. I had also joined a crew called "The Radio Crew" with Ice T, The Glove and Super A.J. we made a record for a movie called "Breakin & Entering" those songs were made at the same time I made "Yes, Yes, Yes" so you'll here the similarities. All these Beats were played at the Uncle Jams Army's Dances. After being in the studio to record "Breaking & Entering" I talked Uncle Jams Army into going to the studio and making a record. After getting so much airplay with "Dial-a-Freak" I knew I had to make my solo project. So I went to the studio with a couple of friends and created "Egypt Egypt" not knowing that it would ever get played on the radio but at least I'll have something to play at the dances with my name (Egyptian Lover) all over it. Well that song and all the songs on the B-side ("And My Beat Goes Boom", "What is a D.J. if He Can't Scratch?", and "The Ultimate Scratch") got played so much thanks to Greg Mack and 1580 K-Day, Radio stations all over the U.S. picked the record up and it was one of the biggest selling records from the west coast. Back then we just called it rap. But little did I know it was the begining of "ELECTRO"

Today I have made a new album for all my Electro fans around the world.....Keepin' it real to the Old School Electro Style.

Enjoy
