motherjane on MySpace

I’ve always been of the opinion that music (in fact all art) basically brings people together, by virtue of keeping them focused on the beauty of what lies before them. It is in the presence of a song that a 16 year old teenager will groove right along a 60 year old hippy, a 40 something stockbroker, a really hot chick or an unknown anybody and feel that he/she belongs.

We met all of the above people here on our page, which incidentally has a lot of the hot chicks,( to our great satisfaction as libidinous men) and a lot of others as well including fans and players in the music industry (to our greater satisfaction as artists.)

Welcome to MySpace :)

This is the story of how motherjane found itself amidst an international mix of all these wonderful people that give us love, support and appreciation. And believe me, all artists thrive on feedback as it kick starts their need to express themselves & connect with their audience.

You see, another one of my theories (all unproven, of course) is that if u take a room full of people you may find only 10 people who love your favorite band in a group of 100. But if you start looking all over the world you would probably find a few million people who love that very band. Every band unknowingly recognizes this fact and the really great ones have undertaken their personal journeys to get their music to all those fans out there.

It doesn’t matter what genre of music you play, how well you play or what language you sing in… they are out there OR rather as motherjane is finding out to its delight, a lot of them are right here, on our page! What Paris is to romance is what MySpace is to musicians and music lovers.

Welcome to the unwritten mission of MySpace

In fact we found our promoter (an irresistible, American irish gypsy) Eva Dowd there. To be honest, she found us. I’m a friend of Sanjeev Thomas, from Rainbow bridge (another band that she promotes). To cut a long story short, one misunderstanding fortunately led to another (Eva thought Sanjeev and I were really close, whereas we had just found out that we shared the same school) and as a result she checked out our www.myspace.com/motherjane page, connected to our main site www.motherjane.in and sent me a hi-mail. The rest is history. Within a few days she was telling me how we should do something with our MySpace page and how important it would become. She even volunteered to update it. I gave her our passwords in like no time at all and told her to do what she wanted to do with it. She being an American (a culture alien to me), would keep mailing me asking permissions to help us in every possible way that she could. I have to admit that motherjane was tickled pink. Here was this vivacious net savvy gypsy doing great PR for us and asking permission for the same.

motherjane as a band  has as a rule been, what’s the word; “shy” with its online promotions. Especially about matters that fall under the category of blowing one’s own trumpet. It is something we have regretted for years (truly) and here from out of the blue we find this passionate evangelist who decides that this band needs the PR. We were like, “if u’re saying you can give us more time to make music, write new songs and play great shows , while u spend your time promoting what we do, we are game!”

Welcome to the power of MySpace   :):):)

Since then, we have won awards for Best Indian Album (Rolling stones, Rock Street Journal), artist of the year (RSJ), Best vocalist, Best drummer (at the Jack Daniels Rock awards) and last but not least Best International rock act from Asia at the AVIMA’s. We are also looking forward to tours in Australia, Japan, Sweden, USA, Romania, Malaysia, Singapore etc etc, where the judges for the awards hail from.

Now I am not saying, we won these because we have a promoter now and we have this unbelievable community that believes in us, b’coz we definitely worked our butts off and deserve our share of recognition.

But I am saying it counts.

It counts, because we now have these awesome people who are as delighted for us as we are. It counts because we watch them tell others about how their band (that’s us, by the way!) has achieved things unheard of in Indian rock history. It counts because they are there, growing one by one and sometimes in droves and they are the reason why we want to get better. It counts because for the first time in our lives we used google translator to understand that the love for music is universal. And most of all, it counts because these are real people out there who keep telling us how much a song means to them and like any artist with his priorities set right, we realize that that in itself is the greatest reward - to do what you love and to be appreciated for that very same reason.

Welcome to the joys of MySpace :):):):)

You’ll find us here for the next 30 odd days as the first band that features on a promo of the top Indian bands of the day and we are grateful for that. We don’t expect to be featured on the front page forever (though we would be willing to consider murder for the opportunity), but we do expect to make more and more music and to be around for the next 30 years. motherjane has been rocking it since 1996. We’ve followed Indian rock and other greats & made history a couple of times ourselves. But right now what we value even more is this chance to meet YOU. It maybe for the first time, but this is definitely not the last.

It will be our privilege to have u as a friend.

Welcome to motherjane.
