............

For a little more then the first decade of my life I grew up on the music of Michael Jackson. I studied his moves, his songs, his image, his lyrics, his history, and anything I could find that had his name on it.

.. ..

When I was about 9 or 10, I was well on my way to becoming a professional Michael Jackson impersonator/back up dancer. At any family gathering, wedding, any event, and as soon as Michael Jackson was on, I was the center of the floor doing the best emulation I could. In 3rd and 4th grade, my friends and I would bring a boom box and jam out to MJ.

.. ..

I remember it was either my 9th or 10th birthday coincided with his HBO special, so my birthday party was watching the concert.

.. ..

Obviously my dreams of being Michael Jackson didn’t pan out, as I transcended into the world of metal and hardcore, and put down any sort of musical ability I had for a camera.

.. ..

To me, Michael Jackson was always an individual, unlike any other performer, or any other person on earth. He always had a positive message, and he was the absolute best at what he did… and it is with who he was, that always spoke to me, and defined him as one of my heroes.

.. ..

I grew up the straight edge goth/metal kid in a town that lacked another like-person. It was never a struggle to be who I was, because I always know who I am, what I stand for, what I believe in, and who I will always be. I didn’t have a strained upbringing, nor did I have an uncountable amount of demons to conquer, However when I did face adversity… the strength I had stemmed from the roots planted by the image of MJ, and knowing I could be who I wanted to be.

.. ..

Michael struggled with his own identity and his own image for his entire life.

.. ..

Though his lifestyle was outlandish, and unfathomable to most, with his zoo, his neverland ranch, and so on… I think most are forgetting how he grew up.

.. ..

Michael grew up on tour… watching his family get with groupies, while they pushed him aside because he was too young to understand or partake in the activities. He grew up with a tireless work ethic knowing that the only time he was truly happy is when he was performing, because that’s when he was safe from the persecution of his fathers sturdy hand and his brothers antagonism. Always told he was ugly, his nose was big, his pimples were a mine field, or being beaten by his father…

.. ..

He was robbed of his own self-image, and his childhood… I could never imagine what it would be like to grow up in that kind of environment, not being able to go out in public because of how famous you are at age 12… and it never let up… and only increased every step he took in his career.

.. ..

In the music industry alone, he is the most relevant recording artist in HISTORY! – as he still holds the number one selling record of all time, EVER. Upon his death – he controlled the top spots on the billboard top 100 with nearly all of his records in the top 10 spots. He sold out every arena he played within minutes of tickets going on sale.

.. ..

If Michael Jackson were to be alive, tour and record… he alone could easily be 25% or more of the entire music industries income.

.. ..

When I see people in the industry belittling him, id like to remind them of the above...

.. ..

As well as his insane list of awards he won… he was not just the “artist of the year” he was “artist of the decade” “of all time”

.. ..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_awards_received_by_Michael_Jackson

.. ..

and I also STRONGLY recommend checking out this list of his other achievements (below the chart spots) with facts like 500 million people watched the view preview of black or white… when have 500 million people watched anything else all at once?

.. ..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Records_and_Achievements_for_Michael_Jackson

.. ..

Michael Jackson was always light years beyond anything anyone has ever witnessed before or will ever witness again in musical performance. He was unrivaled. He was not the next Elvis, nor would there ever be “the next MJ”.

.. ..

I see people bashing him, for a few reasons…

.. ..

one and most popularly because it is SUPER BROOTLZ to hate what other people love… cool +10 scene points! Go rock a big font shirt and cross your arms in a mosh pit cause youre too good for it…

.. ..

two, because of unproven accusations and allegations against him… now being that a few of his accusers were found guilty of FRAUD AND BLACKMAIL! (one so far as to have blackmailed 20+ other famous artists in the same way) is it really that improbable that a bunch of shitty human beings were trying to cash in on someone who is too nice to everyone?

.. ..

I am one of those people who are far too nice for my own good, and I have paid dearly for it. I am owed more money then one would ever imagine because of being a caring and giving person… however it has crushed my kindness, and I am far colder then I once was…

.. ..

For Michael that never changed… he was always the giving kind soul who would help anyone and everyone who needed it. He’s built schools, hospitals, and funded more charities then any other person living or dead.

.. ..

I understand that some can not separate negative media attention from an Iconic and Legendary career… but innocent until proven guilty still exists in this country, right?

.. ..

Parts of Michaels career and life died when the media started taking more from him then he was willing to give… struggling with his identity thru surguries so he could be comfortable with what he saw in the mirror… as well as clearing his name… even making his valiant return to the stage and recording studio…. None of these things will ever happen.

.. ..

His soul will not be at rest knowing he died prior to what was to be his last hurrah… never loving himself as much as he loved everyone else. Never finding, in himself, what he found in so so so many others.

.. ..

His music, his message, his charity, and his kindness has inspired more then the work of anyone else, and will never be forgotten, nor will it ever be matched.

.. ..

Today millions of people from all races, all religions, all over the world… all united to watch and bid farewell to an Icon who wanted to unite the world. I don’t believe there is anything else on this planet that unites such a wide variety of people from such vastly different backgrounds.

.. ..

Now… I do not believe in god or religion, but I do know the world is a better place for having Michael Jackson in it. And we all are so lucky to have been alive to witness the magnitude of his career and the impact of his message.

.. ..

I would not be who I am today if not for seeing the cover of bad, and deciding, yeah, I need long hair, and leather jackets.. I need to be bad as hell! …when I was 10….

.. ..

I am lucky enough to work primarily in the industry of which Michael was the unchallenged king. My initial push into music, was his music, and now its my job.

.. ..

The world took so much from him, so many were out to tarnish his image, and bring him down…

.. ..

It makes me sick to think so many are posting praise of his death, and belittling this short sliver of time in which we have to say goodbye.

.. ..

I implore anyone who is reading this… please do not tarnish love, with hatred. So many are hurting, and trying to heal… Let him fade into eternity, as his fans, his friends, and his family mourn with heavy hearts.

.. ..

To my fallen hero… Rest In Peace Michael.

So for two weeks I was being told, by Scott Lee, that... "Bruce from IRON MAIDEN! will be at metalfest to introduce the maiden movie, its a HUGE surprise, NO ONE KNOWS ABOUT IT!!!" and I was told very specifically where I needed to stand (by the side of the stage) to take photos of it.

So I was pretty pumped. Mike Hsu of WAAF was going to introduce him as he walked on stage.

So I get to the side of the stage under very specific instruction from Scott...

Mike starts talking, so im adjusting my lens, getting ready to shoot the second he walks in the door...

Then Scott says "LISTEN TO WHAT HES SAYING!!!"

so I started to, and paraphrasing, he was saying they were here to recognize people who have been contributing to the metal and hardcore community, then started saying "youve probably seen him around here, taking photos, and probably have seen his work, JEREMY SAFFER!"

Scott, Sylvia, and the rest were smiling cause they tricked me GOOD! Kudos Mr Lee!!!

I was caught so off guard my speech consisted of "thanks..." I was still kinda confused.

they gave me this sweet award

http://twitpic.com/3fuf4

also inducted was Aaron (return to the pit) and his wife Carina (defyunlearn)

and I couldnt be more blown away and honored to recieve this. Thank you so much, EVERYONE!!! Scott Sylvia Gina Leah Mike!

you tricky tricky people!

Now, im not one to really comment on socialites, celebrities, or what have you…

But this bitch is so utterly repulsive that I wanted to say a little something.

SO! As you may or may not have heard, Amy Winehouse might die.

Weird!?

I thought doing thousands and thousands of dollars worth of crack was good for you!!! Especially when you mix it with coke and booze!!

Anyway, the thing that bothers me most about this worthless drug addict, is that she won 5 Grammys this year.

The most ironic thing about that… she was too drugged up to be there to accept the awards in person.

Anyway, the beef I have with it is this…

People look up to singers, song writers, etc… especially those who want to follow in their footsteps in the singer/song writer genre

So you see this singer, who cant pull off a tour, let alone much of a concert because shes such a terrible crack-head mess…. But she wins 5 grammys??????

That sort of sends a message that, hey, if I do tons and tons of drugs, make a waste out of my life, record a song about, and continue being a complete wreck, I CAN WIN GRAMMYS!!!!

In my eyes, that is not a message that should be sent to her fans, to kids who look up to her for her music, etc.

It disgusts me that someone in that condition would be awarded anything but jail time.

SO the news hit that she was told she had to stop smoking, or she would die.

I truly hope she cleans up, resurrects her career, and speaks publically against her former lifestyle.

The other option is no tragedy when its self inflicted…

From grammy to gravestone in a year?

I guess we'll find out…

Monday, January 21, 2008

you know how we can win this barely existent, but much talked about "war on drugs"…

…legalize everything!!!!!

People who are dumb enough to do drugs, should be allowed to.

Don't we live in the land of the free anyway?

If the government stepped in and regulated the legality of it...
.
it would be safer, cleaner, and it would cut out tons and tons of crime.

not to mention if its taxed like cigarettes, we'd be out of our national debt in like... a week.

and yeah, the transition would be sticky, a lot of people would die of overdoses in the first few years,

so what? let the bottom rung of society get cut out, no loss there... survival of the fit and the wit.

I mean seriously, how much money is in drugs? billions and billions on the selling/making side and billions on the trying to stop it/jailing side...

it would free up so much money that the economy would soar.

not like anyone has trouble finding drugs illegally.... soooo I say legalize it all so dumb fucks can overdose, we can cut out crime, and save our national debt.

FAQ

1st - general and common questions
2nd - (futher below) less common questions

"How did you start out in photography?"

Basically when I was younger I was in bands, so I played and went to a lot of shows - and id always have a disposeable camera with me.

I would always take pictures - and eventually one day a promoter recognized what I did and said I should get more into it.

I got a better camera - and started shooting a lot of his shows (which at the time were lamb of god, shadows fall, Killswitch engage, meshuggah, cannibal corpse, etc).

From there it just snowballed into working for a bigger company that he also worked for

I continued working concerts while I was going to berklee school of music for music production

that's when I started to get really into photography - because I hated berklee.

So I left berklee after 3 semesters and went to Hallmark

I graduated and from working in clubs had many contacts to use for when I wanted to use them.

And that brings me to now.

"how do you go about getting passes to shows?"

Well since day one ive worked for someone - either as a house photographer, for a magazine, for a clothing company, its not easy to get a pass if you do not work for someone or have a reason to be taking the photos other then yourself. Most commonly to get ones foot in the door, people work for webzines and fanzines.

You would contact the record label or PR agent, tell them who you work for, why you are shooting, and aptly request said pass.

"Who is your favorite band or person to shoot?"

This is a hard one to answer. I have to say for bands - I notice myself getting most stoked to shoot bands I've shot over and over and over. I get way into and sing along - it's a ridiculous spectacle .
In no order.

Walls of Jericho - Killswitch Engage - Hatebreed - Throwdown - Eighteen Visions - Lacuna Coil - Iron Maiden - Acacia Strain - All That Remains - Remembering Never - Every Time I Die - Atreyu.

Im sure theres more but that's what comes to the top of my head right now

"who is your mentor/inspiration - who got you into photography?"

Well I got myself into photography - I just did it and didn't think much of it - but Scott Lee is the one who really pushed me to become the photographer I am today - kinda like when no one really cared he was the one who in so many words said - youre good at doing this - don't stop. So - thanks scott!!!

I get inspiried by so many - photographers - models - writers - every day

"have you ever been a fan boy/starstruck when shooting anyone?"

Honestly ive shot so many big names that some of the little names are the ones that excite me.

When I got to do a photoshoot with the mighty GWAR - it was probably one of the few times I was thinking "oh my god…. Im shooting gwar…. IM SHOOTING GWAR!!!! IMMMM SHOOOTTTIIINNNG GWAAARRRRRRR!!!!!!" - at which point I actually felt accomplished.

Im not gwars biggest fan on the planet or anything - but to me gwar has always been a staple of what I admired. Prior to gwar I shot a ton of bands I was into for a long time (metallica, maiden, etc). but that moment that gwar stepped in front of my lens. Man! Best thing ever.
I really hope I get to shoot them again.

One thing to keep in mind though - when I do photoshoots - half the time - the bands are people I know/friends - sometimes they are bands im not into - etc.

I am really stoked to ever get the chance to do photoshoots with more obscure bands like peter beste has done in his "black metal photography" - id love to be in Norway shooting members of immortal, mayhem, darkthrone, limbonic art, etc.

"Who are assholes, who are a pain to work with, who do you hate to shoot?"

You know, some people are hit or miss, otheres are amazing every day, some are far from everyday. I only see people one day for the most part, so I couldn't tell you if they were having an off day - or if they are truly "a pain".

"Who would you most like to shoot that you havent?"

In terms of people I would love to do an actual photo shoot with  that I have not yet had the chance to…

In no order

Madonna and Henry Rollins. Those two are the top of my list. Theres a bunch more but none top it like those two.

"How many people have you photographed?"

I have no way of keeping track! Haha too many?!

"Why Canon?"

You know - Nikon and Canon is kinda like pepsi and coke. Its prefrence I suppose.

Personally I like pepsi - and Canon. that's just how I do.

Ive always shot canon and probably always will.

"How do you come up with ideas?"

This one all depends on the shoot - sometimes im handed an idea to shoot and theres a director there, other times the band/model have an idea and I shoot their idea - other times we work on an idea together - and sometimes I just pull something out of my butt and it works.

Most of the time a model, band, label, etc has an idea to shoot, we will go back and fourth modifying it and when we start shooting we try different things and then new ideas tend to pop up right then and there, I just roll with it and generally it works out well.

"When are you coming to LA, UK, AUS, NORWAY, NYC, MI, ETC!?"

I have few travel plans as of now. My manager is moving to LA in the spring so I assume I will be spending probably a week or two every month or two out there doing shoots if not more.

In terms of AUS and UK - I really want to go there but I am a BROKE ASS DUDE! - so when I get some funds together I will figure out a trip out there as long as I can book enough photoshoots to keep my wallet from dying.

I WANT TO DO A PHOTO TOUR OF THE US!!! - so sometime I may do a 10 - 30 day trip in my jeep - crashing on couches doing two shoots a day per select state from here to SLC and back again.

So keep your eyes open for that!

"how do I become your assistant, I want to assist for this show, that show?"

Generally if I really need an assistant I post a bullitin - so keep your eyes open for them

"Are you looking for models? If so for what? If not can I be put on a waiting list?"

Whenever I need models I either post a bullitin or a blog - all projects I am working on are always in my blogs - so go peep them. I do not have a waiting list, I have a slew of select models I contact right away who I have worked with before and if and when I need more/different models you can expect to see a bullitin or blog - so keep your eyes open and keep up with the blogs if you are interested.

"I am 14, 15, 16, 17 - will you still photograph me?"

Sure! As long as a parent or legial guardian tags along and approves! I do senior portraits/school portraits for 16/17 year olds all the time!

"How are you so successful?"

Well it depends on how you define success… I still struggle to pay all my bills like most anyone else working now a days. My name is out there because I keep working and im a bit of a workaholic haha.

"what advise do you have for aspiring photographers?"

Never give up - always do what you want to do - and what makes you happy - but keep in mind you have to eat.

"I am a current photographer looking into going to hallmark, is it a good school, should i go there, what can i expext to learn there?" - everyone on the planet

Well... most importantly, you shouldnt go to Hallmark if you ONLY want to photograph bands live... most of the time i get this question it is from aspiring music photographers, which is excellent, but photography isnt so one dimensional that youd want to go somewhere for one aspect of it.

its been a few years since i was at hallmark and things have changed drasticly since my time, for example; i was doing film/developing, printing film... til febuary if i remember correctly... now a days you go digital within a month.

id love to go again and take the classes over all.. digitaliiizzedddd.

bottom line, if you want a great general knowledge of photography, lighting and how to run the business of photography as well as have a solid base to launch yourself from, hallmark is the place to go.

"can we snuggle?" Posted by scooter pie

Yes, Scott, we can always snuggle. Move back to the REAL western mass! STAT! I miss the entire leone family

"has anyone ever took a photograph of you and survived. lol.?" Posted by T0ast

My dear T0ast - ask around… and you will find none to answer. Taking a photo of me is much like taking a photo of a mafia don doing something illigial

You will be swimming with the fishies.

"how do you do that thing you do? ;D" Posted by Skylark Photography

Magic for the most part… and not hanging out with "kit skylark" pfffft WEAK!

"Did you ever want to do something else with your life, and if so, can you imgine doing it now?" Posted by How the misery begins [DF]

Yes - forever I wanted to be a musician in a metal band. Seeing the life metal bands life first hand, I gotta say I don't think I could cut it.

"Was it hard getting your job? How many stages did you have to go through before reaching this photography job?" Posted by R O S E Y

I don't really know how to answer this - I guess I just did it and eventually the work caught up with me over the years and I am where I am. I try to learn every day and I would suggest anyone to do the same. In the words of mr Jamey Jasta "satisfaction is the death of desire". Always try to best yourself  as much as you can.

"Most of the studio photography you do for bands, is it done at your studio or do you meet them at location?" Posted by J A R E D

For the IN STUDIO shots I do - id say its 90% in studio and 10% on location

In terms of photo sessions id say that is the exact opposite.

"where can i find your whole collection of one set?" Posted by [Xombie Andy] [[Narcissist]] --

I doubt you will ever see a full photoshoot of my images anywhere - ever unless you break into my hardrives - which I strongly urge you not to do hahaha.

1. Recomendations for hotshoe flashes? I need a faster one.

2. What kind of camera did you start photographing with? Did you use 35mm SLRs? and do you still ever?

3. How much did Hallmark cost you, after everything?
Posted by J A R E D

For a flash - it depends on what you want to do and what camera you are using - I need all the details to give you a good answer for what I think will work for you

I started with Kodak disposeable cameras

Hallmark cost a lot after everything.

"When your taking pictures of musicians, whats the most inspiring' about their pictures (from your point of view)? When Im takin pics at concerts its the passion they have for wat theyre doin that, i think makes the pics i take that much better!" Posted by *chels* [T]

I don't know how to answer this but id say I prefer photographing bands that move around - do their thing - and get into - rather then bands that just stand there like blow up dolls.

"What is your opinion on film vs. digital?" Posted by Jessi

Same as record vs. cd
Get with the times or get buried some say.

I say you can get by using film but its becoming a dead art that some will always hold a passion for - its not for me.

I like having the photos ready to go right then and there rather then waiting - it's a topic of much heated debate - but I side with digital all the way (obviously from my gear you can see that)

"what inspired you to get into photography?" Posted by Expressive Moments Art & Photography

I just always did it - and didn't think much of it other then fun. If anything id say Scott Lee was the one who really pushed me into it and kept me going - and got me to take it seriously. Best dude on earth,

"what makes your photographs better than anyone else's, if anything?" Posted by hendrika?

Well I certainly would never say my work is better then anyone elses - but if you do… then thank you! <3

"If you could change one thing about this industry, what would it be and why?" Posted by Hero without a clue

Id love to make more money. Who wouldn't? but that's why I have the best manager on the planet! And why I work as hard as I can at all times.

Your studio work is phenomenal, but how do you get such incredible color enrichment and lighting @ live shows?

how do you instruct or tell your models how to pose? without having to show them every pose individually yourself?

THANKS FOR THE OPEN QUESTIONNAIRE! You are hands-down, one of the best photographers of our time. I see Leibovitz or LaChapelle in your future.
Posted by drew

You sir, are a king among men. Thank you for the compliments. In terms of shooting live concerts I don't use my flash as the main light source and I do not use the stage lighting as the main light source - I try to blend them evenly by setting the flas to about one stop to one and a half stops above the stage lighting.

Best way to do that if you do not know how is to shoot - look - shoot - look - change setting - repeat - til youre happy with what you see. The color is no photoshopped - its just what they have on stage.

Most of the shows you see I shoot are at the palladium in Worcester MA which has amazing lighting (best venue ever as well)

In terms of posing models its usually minor changes - chin up - chin down - eyes here - body this way and that way.

They usually get it - sometimes I help with facial expressions by saying "mean face! Like this!" and doing said "mean face" im sure its probably funny to watch.

"Whats your email so I can put you in my top whatever?"

Thephotoninja AT aol DOT com.

"hey, why arent there any photos of YOU on your myspace?"

Another thought crossed my mind today

the new "tagline" and "mission statements" of suicide girls

the new tag line being
"redefining beauty - one hot naked chick at a time".

thank you suicide girls - for setting women back another 50 years.

i mean - you know that whole civil rights movement? guess it doesnt matter because rather then being looked at as women

you are a hot naked chick.

and their new mission statement

"who are the suicide girls, we are the daughters of betty page, the tattooed art school girls with glasses, we are the fucked up haircut version of the beauty queen. we are an army of over 1,100 unconventionally georgous pin up girls devoted to change your idea of what makes a women beautiful AND WE'RE NAKED!!!"

yes - that last line is in caps on the mission statement too...

now if they are trying to change the ideas of what people think is beautiful apparently close up shots of CROTCH ASS AND BOOBS will redefine it for you too. personally a decently shaved crotch with a shitty tattoo over it doesnt redefine beauty for me - hopefully it doesnt for you either.

oh and that sweet end line - AND WERE NAKED! - shouldnt there be a tee hee hee after that?

as for most of the suicide girls being art students - i doubt half of them could even get into college - let alone a decent art school.

again - thank you suicide girls - for making things obnoxiously harder for true artists to work in nude portraiture. for selling out women as whores - and for redefining beauty for the public - one crotch shot at a time.

my advice - if you want to be a suicide girl - read the contract.

and for all those who support suicide girls in anyway - you are helping a company that prides itself on belittling beauty - art - and the social status of women. good for you.

the thing that disguests me the most is getting emails from 14 year old girls asking me to do their "sets" when they turn 18.

personally i dont think girls at 14 should be dreaming about being naked on the internet - maybe about going to college - becoming president - a ninja - or a lawyer - but naked on the internet - at 14???

again - thank you all for bringing suicide girls into the mainstream so 14 year old girls can dream to one day - be beautiful - and NAKED! HEHEHE too.

sick to my stomach because of you,

hey.

if youre a girl.

please respect yourself.

fucking half the dudes who tour - being on a DOT COM porn site - and thinking youre gods gift to penis wont get you anything but what you deserve - STDS - no respect - and laughed at by the majority.

if the above is what you want to do in life - sweet - do it - just dont complain when no one cares about you - you get treated like the joke your life is - and get called a slut.

i say - if youre going to fuck everyone on tour - be damn proud of being a whore - not ashamed of it. i mean - think about it - maybe down the road someone will use your face in a condom ad campaign

i can see it now

"this girl is why you should wear condoms, because if you dont, you might have one of these, or get whatever she has"

i dont think any dude thinks its cool that you fuck their favorite band or band member.

and dont expect to ever have a decent relationship - because the way i look at it - as many do - fucking you would be like fucking every band you fucked in the past.

a whore is a whore. stand proud - get aids - and die.

thank you.
---------
dudes.

same thing.

i looooove when dudes - esp in bands - bang a ho - a notorious ho at that - then claim to hate them directly after when they get a girlfriend.

guess what - you fucked her - everyone knows you fucked her - and to say you hate her because you fucked her - makes you look really fucking dumb.

and i love when dudes think because a girl sleeps with tons of dudes it makes her a whore but when the dudes rail a ton of girls - they are legends - its pathetic.
---------

i wish we still had morality in this country. we dont.

i just lost tons and TONS of respect for one of the few girls i respected alot.

ive said it before and ill say it again

we live in babylon.

there is no respect or restriction - no morality

whores - drugs - no remorse - stupidity leading us into destructive and self destructive life styles - we dont care who we hurt - who we step over - and who we leave behind - we dont even care who we kill or why we are killing.

here in this new babylon,
i await the rains to wash you idiots into the fucking sea.
