Former Racine Raiders offensive lineman John Mamerow was named the 17th head coach of the team at the annual team banquet Saturday night.  Mamerow was introduced to players and staff for the first time and received a rousing ovation.

"I'm truly honored to have been asked to coach this team," said Mamerow.  "I'm going to give it my all.  I have all of my family's support and they're excited so I'm going to give it my all and see where the chips fall."

Every head coach that takes the reigns for the Racine Raiders knows what is expected of them.

"After a football player stops playing, there becomes a void in his life," said Mamerow. "I'm going to try and fill that with coaching and try and bring a National Championship back to Racine; bring back the pride and tradition that we once had when I played."

Mamerow is a graduate of Waterford High School and received a degree from UW-Platteville.  While at Platteville, Mamerow was the starting center for the team and earned All-WIAC second team honors in 1985-86 and 1986-87.  Mamerow played offensive guard with the Raiders from 1987 to 1993 and started on three National Championship teams.  He earned rookie of the year honors in 1987 and was a six-time all-league offensive lineman.  He was inducted into the Racine Raiders Hall of Fame in 2005.

Mamerow's coaching experience includes five years of youth football, a coaching stint at Waterford High School, and, most recently, he served as offensive line coach and assistant offensive coordinator for the Burlington Blue Devils of the Ironman Football League (IFL).

"One of the things that impressed everyone on the board most about John's resume," commented board member Greg Fictum, "was every single team he's coached qualified for the playoffs."

Board President Joe Mooney also announced that General Manager Curt Barnes stepped down and Scott Smith was named as his replacement.  Smith is a former Raider player and current head football coach at Racine Lutheran High School.  He was inducted into the American Football Association (AFA) Hall of Fame in 2007.

I would like to take this opportunity to invite Quarterbacks interested in playing for the Racine Raiders to our Quarterback Camp.

The camp is being put on in conjunction with Jeff Trickey. The Jeff Trickey Quarterback Camp is "regarded by many as one of the finest quarterback development camps in the country."

The camp objective will be to offer a quality one-on-one instruction of quarterback techniques with an emphasis put on passing mechanics and leadership skills. Defensive recognition through "pre" and "post snap" reads will also be emphasized and drilled.

Listed below are some of the features of camp:

1) One-on-one small group instruction with Coach Trickey.
2) Maximum positive repetitions for all quarterbacks.
3) Breakdown and instruction of passing mechanics evaluated on videotape for each camper.
4) Intense quarterback preparation for all ability levels.
5) Mechanics of passing the football stressed individually.
6) Motivational lectures by Coach Trickey concerning : "Accepting the Risk of Leadership."
7) Disciplined, aggressive execution of drops, boot, dash, waggle, sprint, roll-out techniques.
8) Mental aggressiveness, being assertive in leadership.

The camp will be held at the Lake View RecPlex. The address is 9900 Terwall Terrace, Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin, Kenosha County. Take highway 165 east off of I-94 to Prairie Springs Park. The RecPlex is located on the east side of the park and north of Highway 165. If you take highway 165 to highway 31 you went too far.

The dates for the camp will be 03/25/06 from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM, and on 04/08/06 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM.

Even though we will have plenty of footballs if you have your own plan on bringing it. Since the camp will entail a lot of throwing we do not want to be a football short.

In order to attend the camp you must pre-register. Call 262-210-2223 or email, jordan.kopac@racineraiders.com with your request to register.

The size of the camp will be limited and funded by the Racine Raiders so you must contact us in order to attend.

We look forward to seeing you and hopefully you will have a great football experience at our camp.

Sincerely,

Jordan Kopac,
Head Coach

The Racine Raiders named the teams captains and MVP for the 2005 season at the Raiders annual banquet Saturday night at Infusino's Banquet Hall in Racine.

Wide Receiver Dave Archibald received the Rookie of the Year Award for his efforts working opposite Minor League Football News' Offenseive Player of the Year Sam D'Alie. Archibald has also been assisting head coach Jordan Kopac with recruiting efforts during the off-season.

Linebacker turned defensive End Ian Peterson received the Defensive Captain Award. Coach Micech talked about what he saw in Peterson and how he had to beg defensive coordinator Chris Pivovar to move him to defensive end. Micech said he has never seen anyone get off the ball like Peterson.

The night was reserved, however, for wide receiver Sam D'Alie. D'Alie received Special Teams and Offensive Captain awards as well as the team MVP Award, an award that is voted on by fellow players.

The coaches presenting D'Alie with his awards all had a common theme. D'Alie is tenacious and just doesn't quit. They all talked about how he loved to play the game and D'Alie thanked the coaches for giving him a chance and believing in him.

The team also honored the numerous players, staff and volunteers that received national awards during the off-season and announced that the Petit family (John, Cindy and Dana) were the 2005 Fred Vance Memorial Volunteers of the Year.

The event was emceed by board President Joe Mooney and also included speeches by head cheerleader Jena McKinney, Raiders' Vice President of Administration Bob Milkie, and Raiders' marketing director Jim Rasmussen.

The Racine Raiders announced their 2006 schedule at the team's awards banquet Saturday evening. The team will remain in the North American Football League's Great Lakes Region and Western Lakes Division. The team will have four non-league games and ten league games.

The Raiders season starts out against the St. Paul (MN) Pioneers at Historic Horlick Field on June 25. The Raiders defeated the Pioneers in a game last season that featured extremely high on-field temperatures. The Pioneers captured the 2003 and 2004 Mid-America Football League championship. Last year was a transition year for the team.

The Raiders then invite the Gateway Fury to Historic Horlick Field for a July 1st match. The Fury are entering their fifth year of competition and are members of the Minor League Football Association (MLFA). They have yet to post a losing record and have won a Midwest Football League championship, four Midwest Football League postseason appearances and three Mid-States Tournament honors. The Fury are known for a hard-hitting defense and have numerous close games.

The final pre-season game takes place on July 8th against the Grand Rapids (MI) Thunder at home. The Thunder, also members of the MLFA, finished the 2005 campaign ranked fifth in the Midwest Region and 20th in the nation by Minor League Football News (MLFN) with a mark of 12-1. They are led by All-American Second Team Midwest quarterback Dan Richardson. Richardson also received MLFN's Midwest Region Player of the Year Award for quarterbacks.

The Raiders kickoff the 2006 NAFL campaign with a game against the Hoosier (IN) Hurricanes, a team new to the NAFL, on July 15. The Hurricanes join the Raiders, Eagles, Gladiators and Marauders in the Western Lakes Division. The Hurricanes were members of the Ohio Valley Football League last season. They finished the year as MLFN's Class AA National Champions with a 12-1 record. They had several All-Americans on their roster and received New Team of the Year from MLFN.

The Raiders hit the road for two straight weeks against familiar opponents in the Milwaukee Marauders (July 22) and Kane County Eagles (July 29). The Marauders finished the 2005 campaign ranked 14th in the Central Region by MLFN while the Eagles took home the top honor in the Central Region with a 16-2 record.

The McHenry County Gladiators then visit Historic Horlick Field on August 5th. Last season's game at Horlick proved to be one of the most exciting games in Raiders' history as quarterback Gary Griffin heaved a pass into the end zone that was caught by wide receiver Jermaine Sorenson as time expired to give the Raiders the win.

The Detroit Downriver Diesel come west to Racine to battle the Raiders on August 12th. The Diesel were the MLFN Comeback Team of the Year in the Midwest Region. They finished the season ranked 11th nationally by the publication with an 11-1 record.

The Raiders are looking to fill their schedule on August 19th. However, the team is excited to play internationally for the first time since 1989 again in 2006 as they travel to London, Ontario, Canada to battle the London Silverbacks. The team is in their third year and play at Western Ontario University.

The Raiders then get a league mandated bye week to recover from the Canada trip before having to travel to Indiana to play the Hoosier Hurricanes on September 9th. The team will return home against the Milwaukee Marauders (September 16th) and Kane County Eagles (September 23rd) before batting the McHenry County Gladiators on the road on September 30th.

This is one of the most challenging and Raiders' season schedules in years. The Raiders play nearly half their games against nationally ranked teams from 2005.

Visit the Racine Raiders website for the full schedule in a table format.
