Great overlooked horror film for this Halloween-2009
The Outpost (2008)
When it comes to the zombie film everyone thinks they have seen it all. Zombies fighting sharks, zombie punks, zombies that make you laugh and zombies that will make thee cry! The 2008 Steve Barker film The Outpost brings in the new! String-theory, physics, Nazis and zombies! The blood and brains of this story is a group of mercenaries from various cultural backgrounds are hired by a UK research team to go into a war torn eastern European country to secure and recover materials from a WWII bunker. The team finds what looks to be remains of current ethnic-cleansing but soon find it is something older and darker yet! The Outpost gives a claustrophobic sense of mind to this zombie movie that will make you squirm in your seat with lots of mystery and gore to go around! This movie is well acted and the cast is led by Ray Stephenson (Punisher: War Zone and HBO’s Rome) making a movie that works on so many levels! Not just as a horror movie but The Outpost has more psychological substance then most horror films today. For example, the crew of mercenaries in The Outpost are from places like Africa, Scotland , England, Russia and the US. This seems to display a collective dread of Europe again coming under the grip of fascism and the most monstrous of enemies of humanity rising again. The Outpost is one of my favorite zombie films and you need to see it if you like the undead and skulls that pop like grapefruits in a vice! Not quite the “gore-porn” that is films like Hostel but brutal none the less!
Note....A new film shot in Norway will be out soon called "Dead Snow".....also about Nazi zombies...in the snow!!!

The night was hot and sticky as I walked into Room 710 and
met with Foosa and Dj Smooth for a night of music. I got to the bar and flagged
down the barkeep as a inch long cockroach ran across the bar and jumped down to
the feet of the bartender as she came to help me. She saw the roach, I saw the
roach, Foosa saw the roach, yet still I was given a Lone Star...at full price. The
beer was cold and filled with Texas
pride so I drank it down.
With the roach behind us (and behind the bar as well) we greeted the great
Dirty Charley just before he went up on stage and gave Austin their first taste
of The Dirty Charley Band! Charley
gathered bass, drums and a electric guitar player for a good introduction for Austin
in the genre of Satanic Country music. While at times you could tell these
players had done little practicing of these songs, the future is extremely good
for Dirty Charley! Songs like "Should have Killed my Baby" (when she
was still mine) and "Black Yodel" have a dark horror movie, cannibal
vibe Charley also brings great Honky-Tonk and Punk elements while talking shit
all along the way! Get out and see Dirty Charley as he kicks ass all over
Austin this summer!
The always dangerous Izzy Cox was the next up to bat that night and gave a
fantastic set with a talented band behind her. Mr. Lewis & the Funeral Five closed the show.
(Missed that….my coach turns into a
pumpkin the stroke of midnight!)

SXSW.....it has come and gone but it will be one to remember, that's for sure! Some of the best bands came into the KAOS studio for a great underground radio ho-down!
S&D started the day off with a wonderful acoustic band from ....Denmark.... called Murder! Dark and lyrical, Murder was a great way to start our Saturday off for SXSW. Murder played some new songs and songs from their album "Stockholm Syndrome" that Smooth & Demented can say, without a doubt, has been one of the most important albums we have listened to this year. Murder has deeply compelling vocals that leave the listener wondering and thinking about long after the album has finished. Fantastic vocals!
Next came some Celtic folk songs from Matthew Ord! Great pickin style guitar (note: get all of these shows from archie.org) however at some point Ord mentioned that he felt the borrowed guitar he was "playing was ridiculous!" Nice looking guitar I thought.....but what do pirates know of fancy musical instrumentation? Ord is one hell of a guitar player.
Then came Hey Negrita from ....England.... who played a country and folk inspired acoustic set for us. Hey Negrita mixes a bit of British sounding hooks and catchy songwriting with a southern ....Americana.... feeling. This kind of recipe goes well with beer and fajita’s! Hey Negrita is a great example of the songwriting talent that leans toward traditional country music and interpreted with a British rock ethic. Hey Negrita is but one of the bands that have this type of sound and is pushing the scene along very well across the pond.
Dallas based band The O's got behind the mic and showed us how far the alternative country scene has come here in ....Texas...., which is more an alternative to the alternative! The O's are a two person band....banjo and guitar and the guitar player stands in front of a kick drum. This combination brings two different songwriting styles from both members and along with the deep impending sound of the drum and banjo give The O's a urgent and haunting sound that can suddenly switch to a happy, sunny , beer swigging kind of tune. You must see The O's live!
White Swan , Black Swan finished the day for the S&D show and brought a sound that that is unearthly and wonderful. Hearing this band play reminded me of that magical feeling I got as a kid, when looking through the dusty backroom of some record store you find a something special and when you spin that record with your headphones on late one night you get swept away into a place you had no idea existed but you are glad you found. What can I compare their sound to? Well let’s say Leonard Cohen and Mazzy Star meet in an old west bar where Sergio Leone asks them to re-score “Fist Full of Dollars” ....White Swan, Black Swan is what you get. This is a great band with a great sense of humor so, find their music and get some headphones. The KAOS fans also got a short dose of Dirty Charley! As always, a bad ass!
Everyone was just bad ass!

What a night! SXSW kicked off and the Smooth and Demented was there to fill the radio gap that mainstream radio simply can't ...or wont. The local bar that hosted KAOS radio was full for a St. Pattys day and filled with great live radio! Two Dollar Bash was back in the KAOS studio for their third time and they have never sounded better! Based in Germany this multinational group of guys with a bluegrass flair was a very good start to the night as Two Dollar Bash out did them self! The next band we had was the infamous Clyde & Clem's Whiskey Business! Rowdy and blasphemous the Whiskey Business whipped the place into a frenzy! Drunken jug music from some boys who can invoke Cypress Hill as well as Bill Monroe! Clyde & Clem is a local Austin act that must not be missed! Desert came last in the form of Pennsylvania band Hoots & Hellmouth! A stomping band that got the air waves hopping! Combining blues, soul with old-timey tricks, Hoots & Hellmouth was a great show to watch and listen to...like going to a old fashioned tent revival after smoking a joint Hoots & Hellmouth will make ya smile! If you pass up a chance to see this band you are a jack-ass!

Some over looked horror films for Halloween from the master of the macabre and my favorite horror actor ...Vincent Price! The Last Man on Earth This 1960's era movie stands out from other Vincent Price films and has proven to be highly influential as The Last Man on Earth has spawned the Omaga Man and I Am Legend. Last Man on Earth can also be accreted for giving George Romero the look for the classic 60's zombie film Night of the Living Dead. Price is great in this movie as the last man alive after a virus has turned the world into zombie vampire creatures. Price plays Dr. Robert Morgan who was working on a cure for the sickness before it claimed Europe and then America. Morgan meets an uninfected woman and takes her into his home but he finds she holds a secret that may turn his solitary life upside down. A great 60's horror/sci-fi film that helped to expose the country's fear over nuclear fallout and succeeds at it's goal to brings a fun, scary movie to it viewer. Some actors have their voices dubbed due to the fact a few of the actors are from Spain but over all, Last Man is a blast! This is a great and underrated film that is a must see this Rocktober!

What the fuck are these actors thinking? Uwe Boll. A notorious name in film making has unleashed another movie upon us. This time "In the Name of the King" is the culprit with action star Jason Statham as the main character named Farmer. As his name says farmer is a farmer and a super-secret badass ninja motherfucker in this video game to movie apocalypse based on the forgettable game Dungeon Siege set in a medieval fantasy landscape. I will say nothing of the plot to this movie nor will I criticize (most of) the acting. Statham is an action star that I have liked in many films as well as John Rhys-Davies. Both Davies and Statham do their best while the villain played by Ray Liotta and the king by Burt Reynolds would make my high school drama coach blush with their hammy, lazy acting…..but then that's where the director should step in and do his job. The director is what we need to focus on here! Uwe Boll has made such movie watching poison as "House of the Dead", "Alone in the Dark" and "Bloodrayne" 1 and 2. If these titles sound familiar it is because they are all video games! "House of the Dead" was not too bad…bad, but did not make me vomit. Feel free to read my other review of "Alone in the Dark". Uwe Boll is one of the worst film makers alive today. Why they give this man money to make films is beyond me. Each turn in his movies is totally predictable and the costumes look like they come from a Halloween supply store. Uwe has no clue on how to direct an actor or set up a scene so his movies follow a 1-2-3, ABC kind of pattern. The movies he makes dont represent the video games they are based on very well to say the least and Boll picks "fanboy" games, not games that are household names that have real name recongizition because that is what makes a video game to movie picture work. I cant compare Boll to that of famous b-movie icon Ed Wood as Wood did not take himself so serious. Boll thinks the movies he makes are great! "In the Name of the King" is so bad it is unreal! Uwe Boll proves he is not an action movie director nor will he ever be a good director. Uwe Boll will be remembered as one of the worst film makers of the new millennium and Boll will be lucky to get remembered with the likes of Ed Wood as he is not fit to drink a cup of Ed Woods piss! If you want a good ass-kicking Jason Statham flick get "Snatch", "Transporter" or "The Bank Job". If Uwe Boll stopped taking himself so seriously and tried to expose his campiness in his next movie he could save himself.....maybe! Pray Uwe stops this madness! Uwe Boll direction gets * 1 star out of 5 ***** King of crap...Uwe Boll! PS....a gum company has offered a million people a free pack of gum to sign a petition to get Boll to stop making movies!

Roger Corman- 2 classic must see horror films!
Roger Corman has produced many famous Hollywood stars from Francis Ford Coppola to Jack Nicholson. Known as "King of the B's" Corman gave lush sets and scenery a life and character all their own so they stood as regal and dramatic as his stars, such as master of the macabre Vincent Price. Here are 2 must see Corman pictures for the Halloween season.
Pit and the Pendulum Vincent Price stars in this Poe inspired tale of torture and revenge. This is however an almost blood-less tale starring Barbara Steele, John Kerr,. Francis Barnard (Kerr) goes to the castle of his brother-in-law to investigate the death of his sister when he is pulled into a tale of madness. Price is at his finest in this picture as he straps Kerr into a huge swinging blade torture device to split him in two. Dont worry, like I said, blood-less. The Terror Filmed in 1963 this film now lies in the public domain. The Terror was put together after wrapping The Raven. Using the remaing actors Corman boils up this very affective ghost story of a French solider played by Jack Nicholson who is shipwrecked and follows a ghostly woman to the castle on the hill. In comes Boris Karloff who hides a dark secret. The viewer is treated to a 78 year-old Karloff in a basement fight scene as the room fills with water. The Terror also marks Jack Nicholson as a first time director after Corman is called away on business but Jack is not alone in the directors chair as Corman protégé Francis Ford Coppola and a host of others direct this film.

EL Demento's Movie Review.…Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End Will the ship sink under a plot heavy story line packed full of new characters and old feuds? Not quite, but the chain-shot has surely damaged the rigging! Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End is another fast and fun romp through the seven seas and delivers what it claims as the pirates take you around the world in this new installment! The movie has a lot to say and a few too many characters to say it with but with sword fighting, octpi-like Davy Jones (Nighy) dueling Jack Sparrow atop the mast of a ship before they are sucked into a whirlpool…well c'mon!! Ya got to love it! The film takes us on a long winded ride to Davy Jones Locker to find Jack (Depp) in a type of pirate purgatory they must free him from in order to gather the pirate kings in a last stand against British Navel Traders. Worlds Ends treats us to a look at Captain Jacks pa…Keith Richards! Very cool! Outside of that, Geoffrey Rush as Captain Barbossa steals the show totally in this picture so much I start wondering why they did not call it "Pirates of the Caribbean: Barbossa Pirate throw-down"! Hard to steal the show from the likes of Depp but Rush takes the helm of Worlds End and that's not at all a bad thing, yet with the convoluted plot I did want to see a bit more from Captain Jack. Chow Yun-Fat is a perfect pick for the Singapore Pirate King but with so many characters you miss the potential for a wonderful performance from him. Jaw-droping special FX make this the most visual awesome of the Pirate movies and the finial scene give us a taste of a possible forth installment in the franchise. Confused plot, lost actors, scene stealing Barbossa …even with all that Worlds End is still a knockdown drag-out good time on the high seas and won't disappoint Pirate fans! El Demento gives Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End * * * 3 of 5 stars

Monster House When I was a kid, no matter what neighborhood I lived in, there was a spooky house at the end of the block. I would be lucky if it wasn't the location of my after school babysitter. Monster House oozes with a youthful sense of horror and kiddy level macarabe that leaps off the screen at you! Monster House is a movie that stands beside films like Goonies and the Nightmare Before Christmas as grand symbols of the fun and mystery that could be had as a kid on any given day. The story surrounds DJ (Michael Musso) and Chowder (Sam Lerner) who know something unnatural is happing at the spooky old house on the block. DJ makes a foe out of the owner of the house, old man Nebbercracker (Steve Buscemi) who defends his house and its secrets but has a sudden heart attack and is taken to the hospital. Slowly the house starts to come to life and devours anything it can get its stairs on! This is one evil house! I found it very cool that the monster in this haunted house IS THE HOUSE! Monster house is a visual joyride from start to finish and is the crowning achievement in computer animation! Great acting from DJ's babysitter (Maggie Gyllenhaal) and DJ's father played wonderfully, as always by Fred Willard (who I seem to love in everything I see). The sound and music are good but that is the one aspect of Monster house I felt was overlooked in its making (but has a very cool tune "Trick or Treat" by Siouxsie And The Banshees) Also Spielberg plasters his name all over the movie giveing little credit to the rest of the filmmakers. Monster House is a very cool, stylish film that dosent have to rely on cheesy, right-now style pop culture jokes or bubblegum pop songs to get its point across. What is the point? It's just freckin' fun to be scared! El Demento gives Monster House * * * * 4 of 5 stars. On DVD now.
