Went to the Village Vanguard in NYC a couple weeks ago to watch Brad Mehldau play (beautiful/bad-ass, jazz oriented piano player) as a trio featuring Larry Grenadier on bass and Jeff Ballard on drums....What a special night...for so many reasons... So moving. I'd never been in that room before, nor seen him play. It was fantastic.
I wish I had a recording of that night. The trio played some new tunes. My favorite Brad Mehldau tune is titled "When it Rains". He has a few Radiohead covers like "Everything in It's Right Place" and "Paranoid Android" that are really beautiful. He didn't do any of those tunes that night at the Vanguard but nevertheless every song was magical. If you aren't familiar with him yet, check him out....

Put the Blame on You (M.Mathes/J. Deaderick/Audley Freed 2008) (Lyrics by John & Melissa)
Place your bet in the hat and I'll pull out a magic number Did I say that aloud? I woke the baby from his slumber I don't know what I did, but it's your lucky day I'll give you some space and I'll walk away
How long should I try to hold on? I don't want to say goodbye, it's a sad song But walking backwards in time, just ain't no good
How tragic it is, I never thought you'd really leave me Not everything's hard, but not everything is easy When I'm feeling so much You do all that you can To feel nothing at all Why don't you act like a man?
There's no shouldn't or should I? When you couldn't you could try Baby, I'm not trying to put the blame on you
Time to figure out what's right Tell me baby, what's right? Time to figure out what's right Tell me baby….what's right?
I don't know what I did, but if it's my lucky day You'll make this easy on me, if you're walking away
How long should I try to hold on There's no shouldn't or should I? Walking backwards in time aint no good When you couldn't you could try I don't want to say goodbye, it's a sad song I'm not trying to put the blame on you

NOW THAT I KNOW (Melissa Mathes/John Deaderick)
What have I done, I can't stop crying Now that your gone, I feel like dying I've been a fool, took you for granted Only a fool could push you away
All of the doubts Things that aren't real Projecting, expecting too much The things that I love The things that you hate The same things that make My heartbreak
Now that I know I won't have to ask
Maybe you're right, we're not the same The best that I've got is no reason to stay So I'm moving on, pick up the pieces I've got to give more than I take
I wallow and weep An act out of fear Things that I can't control But I won't go on telling myself That you're all I need and nobody else
Now that I know I won't have to ask Now that I know I won't have to ask
When I think about the ways that we used to laugh And when I think about the ways you seemed to understand When I think about the ways you seemed to laugh when you used to cry You used to try, you used to lie
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-Now that I know I won't have to ask Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-Now that I know, you won't hear me ask

NO REASON TO CRY (M. Mathes/J. Deaderick ) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Never seen so many stars How tiny we become A band of light around the moons, Saturn and Mars So much time has passed since I was young
We're all learning every day If you're a kid or if you're grown The ways in which I knew you then Always felt that love was shown
Every morning you are the sun that shines for Better days love, and I won't leave you behind Wonder why, I ever have a doubt Either way, Either way things work out Out of nowhere, Reach up and touch the sky It's so clear, when you get to the end of the day When u cover up my eyes During all the scary scenes, Or when I hear you laugh aloud- You kiss away my darkest dreams
I hope I've been a good daughter, sister, friend to you You have my word. I'll always try Don't think about the things you wish you would've done It's not a good reason to cry,
Every morning, I'll be your sun that shines Wonder why, we ever have a doubt cuz Either way, We know it will all work out Out of nowhere, Reach up and touch the sky It's so clear, when we get to the end of the day Don't matter which way whether It's rain or it's sunny weather There's no which way that's better Don't matter which way whether It's rain or it's sunny weather There's no which way that's better than just knowing you're there And I know you're always there-CHORUS

SINK OR SWIM Lyrics by: Melissa Mathes 10-14-08 Music by: John Deaderick/MM
Talking to you, talking sweet It's getting late and we're in the street Somebody flashed their lights on us Just in time for you to come up for air It's raining cats and dogs-are we Swimming or sinking here?
Tell me what you really want Am I ghost in your graveyard now? Before you shoot focus your aim Who's the pilot flying this plane? I'm sick of pretending I don't feel a thing
And when it's right you'll feel it And if you're going to act than mean it Don't take more than you can carry Another bone for you to bury....I can't promise that I will hold on
We're standing at the table I'm curious what you might say I'm bringing tears to your party now I've got more feeling than you will allow I'm an open book always Yet I'm your hiding place
And when it's right you'll feel it And if it's right you'll mean it At times I think we can do better If we were to stay together Either way I know we will be fine
Okay I'll stop it, we won't talk about it Some days are heartbreak that's all there is to it I don't really know what it happening with you I don't really know where you are. Where you are….now

WHERE I FOUND YOU (Melissa Mathes/John Dearick)
About to rain The wind it strong April showers You'll be coming home
You have my undivided attention when you whisper on the line Play a song that makes me smile I can hear it down the stairs and through the hall
Are you lonely miles away? Havana must be such a drag Tomorrow you'll be coming home Outside my window. That's where I found you
