On the 2nd of July Thee SPC release a new 7" single by Sheffield band Meat For A Dark Day. The single Vanity Unfair is a limited edition of 500 copies on heavyweight, clear vinyl. You can pre-order this from www.theespc.com now.
Lyrically engaging & musically sharp, Meat for a Dark Day are a Sheffield rock and roll band, featuring ex-Fat Truckers vocalist Mark Hudson. Their debut single for Thee SPC illustrates perfectly the two different sides of the band: from the beautiful mournful kitchen sink tale "Three Mallards" to the unreconstructed garage swagger of "Vanity Unfair". The band's musical influences are wide and far from predictable, but they certainly share something in common with artists whose names are often mentioned by reviewers; Smog, Nick Cave, The Fall, early Ten Benson, Arab Strap, Jesus and Mary Chain, Tom Waits. Meat For A Dark Day produced this single with Ross Orton (MIA, Fat Truckers, Jarvis Cocker) & Dean Honer (All Seeing Eye, I Monster, Add N to (X).)

THEE SHEFFIELD PHONOGRAPHIC SOCIETY
Thee SPC was set up in in Sheffield back in 2003 by Rob and Mark, Darren and Diane - originally to release records by their own bands Chuck & The Motherf***ers. There wasn't much outlet for bands in Sheffield at the time, so they decided to do it for themselves.
The releases were successful so they started releases music from some of their favourite local bands as well and it's built up organically since then.
Bands on the label past and present include The Long Blondes, Monkey Swallows The Universe, Smokers Die Younger, Slow Down Tallahassee, and Balor Knights.
They say "We're doing it for the kids! We're all big music fans and we like to give artists as much freedom to do what they want" It's a small label, but they see themselves as a good stepping stone (for example The Long Blondes)
They usually find bands through the live circuit in Sheffield, but have broken the trend with their next 7" release by Meat For A Dark Day, who are a Sheffield band that they found by trawling through MySpace. This year look out for releases from Heartyeah. A download only single is available from www.theespc.com in June, and the album 'Traps' follows in July.
There's also be a Ltd edition 7" from Meat For A Dark Day in July.
Later in the year they will be relaunching their fanzine & CD "Thee Humbug". Old issues have become collectors items with early tracks from the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Long Blondes, Monkey Swallows The Universe, and Bromheads Jacket.
You can also listen to some podcasts of their radio shows on the website www.theespc.com
