SXSW  March 18, 2006

Hector Saldana

:Young singer Liz Primeaux is lightning in a bottle If ever there was a chance for lightning to strike for a SXSW 2006 performer, my money would go on Liz Primeaux and the Ghost Band. I admit it's a highly unlikely choice. But it's a tempting possibility. She is 22 years old and absolutely adorable. Drop dead gorgeous. But Primeaux, a former bartender, is not some Coyote Ugly wannabe star. She's got songs and a really good voice. There's also the matter of owning one of the most unaffected and appealing dispositions on and off stage. "Diane, I'm singing!" Primeaux said to a friend chatting a little too loudly at the nondescript Sixth Street bar. "Arrest that woman!" The giggly, sassy singer proceeded to present her gentle song, "Better Baby." Maybe there's a bit of Jewel or Shania Twain in that slightly country lilt. I couldn't quite tell. Did I like it or not? Some goth people walked out because, obviously, it wasn't hard enough for their baggy shorts 'n' Chuck Taylors tastes. But this was getting entertaining -- something that's sadly lacking at many of the SXSW showcases, which truth be told have nothing to do with life or death -- or rock 'n' roll. After the number, she admitted her guitar was out of tune and that she had cotton mouth. In other words, adorable and disarming. This girl's not chasing anything. She just is -- take her or leave her. I still wasn't sure I wanted to stay, but made my decision based on the look of her backup band. To her left stood a bass player who looked like he could have stepped out of an episode of "Gunsmoke." That would be Bob Karasch, the preacher, maybe the gambler. A little closer to her was an attractive woman (I would come to learn this is Primeaux's mom, Nazia Primeaux a.k.a. Pink Mama) decked out in a strange pink wig. A plus-sized female drummer, Ashley Kraft, offered up a light backbeat, and the man with the sweet touch on guitar was perhaps an auto mechanic, too. His name is Jim Erickson. My point? They looked like something that might have appeared on "Ed Sullivan" in the '60s, reminding me of the first time I saw the Turtles or the Mamas & the Papas. So I was curious. The sound was clean and uncluttered. What I heard next compelled me to stay. Primeaux sang an original song with the title, "Carolina." She pulls off the kind of odd song structures Carol King sometimes incorporated. To my ears, it sounds like a hit song. And it's so beautifully simple and easy to digest (despite the dramatic pauses). The young lovely went on to sing a song about why crying is good and then ended with the song "Goodbye," which featured flute from Pink Mama and a Memphis groove on guitar that reminded me of the Young Rascals. Afterward, I talked to the friendly, quick-witted singer. I had to ask about her mom's outrageous pink wig. "It was actually a big joke," Primeaux said. It stuck. She's currently recording her debut album at a a small Austin outfit, PBJ Records. Primeaux admitted that she wanted to be a rocker, too. I was a little shocked because the set had been so sweet and gentle. But she just simply put her hands to two spots on her chest where on one side was an angel, and on the other a devilish creature. She's a little of both, she said with a little bounce. Then I noticed the wisp of a tattoo peeking out of her jeans from just above her bottom. Hmm, who are you, Liz Primeaux? I'd call her lightning in a bottle. And I bet I'm right.

Sorry I just had to do this! If you search for "PBJ Records" you will mostly get a lot of stuff about us! But somewhere in there is a definition of "What is a PBJ?" I decided that we should respond with our definition of "What is a PBJ?" so people would'nt get confused......

What is a PBJ?

In Maryland, if a person has not been convicted of drunk driving within the previous five years, the person is eligible for probation before judgment, informally called PBJ. A PBJ is exactly what it says.

In Austin and the rest of the world (incuding Maryland) A PBJ is an Indie record label.

After the court finds that the evidence is sufficient for a finding of guilt, the person is placed on probation before getting a judgment (or conviction) against them. If the probationary period is completed without any violations, the person does not receive a conviction, no points are assessed, and the guilty finding does not show on the person's complete driving record. The PBJ will appear on a separate PBJ driving record, which is only available to the person, his or her lawyer, the courts, the prosecutors, and the police.

(Our bands appear on a PBJ Record that is available to everyone, everywhere!)

If the person receiving PBJ gets arrested for drunk driving a second time, the authorities will know that he/she is not a first offender.

If a person recieves PBJ they will hear some great music!

If a person elects to accept PBJ he or she gives up the right to an appeal and the arrest cannot be expunged.

If a person elects to accept PBJ he or she gives up the right to bad music and the addiction to good music cannot be expunged!

However, a PBJ can be expunged from a driving record, after 10 years without a ticket.

Our PBJ can never be expunged and you will still be listening after 10 years without a ticket (unless you go see the bands live, in which case you might need a ticket!)
