"First Annual S.F. Songbird Festival: High Octane ’60s Soul Shakedown"Date/Time:Thu., July 30, 8:00pmPrice: $10

S.F. Loves a Working Man
S.F. Loves a Working Man
Winner of last year’s SF Weekly Music Award for the Soul/Funk/R&B category, Lord Loves a Working Man infuses Deep South grit into its Mission District home base. The band balances moody blues with uplifting shakers and near-spiritual onstage jam sessions. The group recently expanded its lineup to 11 members by adding two new vocalists, sultry singer Cynthia Taylor and trumpeter Freddi Price. Lord Loves a Working Man performs live, with support from the Struts, the Hi-Nobles, and dancers the Devil-Ettes, as part of the first Songbird Festival. — Tamara Palmerhttp://www.sfweekly.com/events/first-annual-s-f-songbird-festival-high-octane-and-146-60s-soul-shakedown-1576854/

ello all...

First of all a big thanks to everyone for their continued support and
love of live music. Don't think for second that your attendance at any
one of our shows doesn't go unappreciated to the fullest extent,
especially in these heavy times. We know everyone's doing everything
they can to get by, and on our side of things we'll keep playing our
hearts out to make sure you all have a soundtrack to work by.

That being said, there will be two opportunities to catch us this
month, both at the Filmore District's home for blues and soul THE BOOM
BOOM ROOM. This Friday we'll be teaming up with two other happening
local groups: the "Mexicali Gypsy Pirate Polka" of DIEGO'S UMBRELLA
fresh from their appearance at this year's South By Southwest, and the
multi lingual electronica rock power duo SUPER ADVENT CLUB.

Our April 29th show is a chance to have an intimate, get down and
groove night with LLAWM playing 2+ sets. We'll be playing the whole
song book, so if you have been missing a certain tune from our last
couple shows there's a very good chance you'll hear it and sweat to it
that night. A special guest TBA will also appear.

We promise you hot tunes and cold drinks on both occasions.

Ladies and Gents,

All good workouts require a good warm up and round of calisthenics,
and what other fiercer workout is there than the New Years
celebrations. On Saturday Dec 27, the Bottom of the Hill presents a
bound-to-knock-your-feet chance to shake yourself out of your egg nog and candy cane haze and get into shape for 2009
with three hard hitting bands that fulfill many of your essential
musical food groups...

The Kehoe Nation:
Fronted by the jaw-dropping talents of Bay Area Veteran guitar slinger
Bryan Kehoe (M.I.R.V., Les Claypool's Frog Brigade, Jerry Cantrell,
Ministry), his "Nation" power trio mixes psychobilly, metal, punk, and
ump-ah polka into an unrelenting hedonistic hellish good time.

Lord Loves A Working Man:
Awarded SF Weekly's "Best R&B/Soul/Funk Band" for 2008, this 10-piece
group churns out gritty, "Stax-inspired " originals and obscure covers
"that make audience members alternately work up a sweat and hold each
other very, very close."

Demon Three:
Made up of a group of B.O.T.H. all stars, Demon Three plays
hi-powered surf instrumentals.

Thanks to everyone that voted and lets our music find its way to their ears, LLAWM went to the SF Weekly Music Awards ceremony last Thursday Oct 16 and walked away with the award for best Soul/R&B/Funk act in San Francisco. There were some great talents and acts also in the category, so it must have been a squeaker, we didn't even plan any speeches.
to see how it all played out:
http://blogs.sfweekly.com/shookdown/2008/10/last_night_sf_weekly_music_awa.php

Nothing would have been possible without the folks who come to the shows, the bookers who let us into their clubs, the growing army of musicians that have all at one time or another played a part in our development and existence, and of course the amazing forefathers and foremothers of the music that we so dearly love and try hard to do justice to.

This just means we've got to keep working harder to create more music for y'all, a job we look forward to fulfilling.

Thanks again

"Lord loves a working man" is advice given to Navin Johnson from his family in Steve Martin's classic, The Jerk. But SF's own Lord Loves A Working Man feels more like "Cool Jerk." With a sound slathered with raw soul reminiscent of the early Stax Records era, it's a wonder that the 9-piece band hails from the Mission District instead of the Mason-Dixon line.

Their 2005 self-titled release is a throwback to traditional rhythm and blues, long before it was ruined by Auto-Tune. Sporting a mean rhythm section accompanied by smooth horns and both female and male vocalists, Lord Loves A Working Man can get the hips swaying as easily as fellow revivalists Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, and shares the old-school aesthetic of funk/soul aficionados as Miles Tackett and Stones Throw DJ's Egon and Peanut Butter Wolf. Their live performances match if not exceed their studio grooves, and provide a perfect night to slip on some boogie shoes.

The gritty, lowdown soul of Lord Loves A Working Man puts them amongst this year's SF Weekly Music Awards nominees. Show your support and cast a vote. --Oscar Pascual

Comrades...

Let your voices be heard and vote!....

...yes indeed in November of course, but why not warm up right now by casting an online vote for LORD LOVES A WORKING MAN. I just found out that we have been nominated for a Music award from the SF Weekly for best Soul/R&B group of 2008.

Here's the LInk:
http://sfweekly. com/polls/music08/

We're not in this for the accodlades heaven knows, but it would be a pretty groovy feather in our collective cap. Plus, we've had so many people in the group thus far and many who are still on-call, chances are you'll be casting a vote for your next door neighbor.

It took me all of 2 minutes, its not like other "best of the bay" voting pages where you have to scroll through 50 pages of "best of" things, there's just two pages of music genres.

Thanks for considerin' and as always Here's To You and the Work You Do...

What has over 10 horn players, 5+ soulful singers, 3 organs, over 40lbs of suits, and enough git-down-till-you-fall-down groove to keep you dancing all night?????

An evening with LORD LOVES A WORKING MAN, THE AMULETTES, and THE SOUL CAPTIVES.

Vintage sounding soul, ska, and more soul from 3 hard hitting bands brought to by the HORNUCOPIA FESTIVAL OF SAN FRANCISCO.

Don't pass up the chance to put on your best and sweat it all off to these bands who rarely play under one roof at the same time to conform to city ordianances which puts restrictions on room temperature and dancing fatigue.

Please also do yourself and favor and visit the HORNUCOPIA website to see the list of amazing bands playing over a span of 10 days. Advance tickets to this show as well as festival passes can be bought here as well.
