KMUD's production assistant, Levon "Von" Perkins, died this afternoon apparently of a heart attack. We are shocked and saddened. We loved his calm demeanor, his smile, his dedication to this radio station. He was a good man to work with.

Dear Redwood Community Radio Activist:

Community radio is typically defined as a type of service that caters to the interests of a certain area, broadcasting material that is popular to a local audience but is overlooked by more powerful broadcast groups. Across the United States community radio stations are non-profit, community-based operations licensed by the Federal Communications Commission for broadcasting in the non-commercial, public portion of the FM band. Stations like ours differ from other public radio outlets by having community volunteers actively participate as broadcasters.

KMUD listeners -- from near and far -- want news and information, cultural and music programs, a sense of the wondrous place we all call home AND  want to be connected  -- or reconnected -- to your community. That is the intent and vision of RCR's Board of Directors, Staff and Volunteers.  We are serious about our public service obligation - and we know that our members rely on our commitment. As a member - or a former member we are trying to reach out to again - how do you value that membership, and what does being a member of Redwood Community Radio mean to you?

Words from Webster's Dictionary describe:

mem·ber: one of the individuals composing a group

com·mu·ni·ty

1: a unified body of individuals

2 : joint ownership or participation ..

ra·dio

1: of or relating to electric currents or phenomena (as electromagnetic radiation) of frequencies

between about 3000 hertz and 300 gigahertz

2: making or participating in radio broadcasts

sta·tion: a place established to provide a public service

Longtime KMUD Programmer (and an original "Mud, Sweat & Tears" band member) James Geth of Universal Gospel says about being a member, "It's just two words... Free Speech."

Volunteer Barb Froehlich states that "One of the reasons I moved here was that when I heard KMUD I heard a patchwork of programs. I enjoy that about the station. You can hear a classical music show and after that you can hear a polka. We came from a culture of changing channels all the time. And when we go on vacation, we go on-line and listen to the archives to find out what has happened."

The community circle widens every time a new member joins. If you are, or once were a member and still receive this letter - RCR would like to welcome you back and asks for you to renew your partnership into this community circle and keep KMUD moving forward during this Spring Pledge campaign. Your Silent Drive monies help the on-air FunDrive get off to a good start. On-air pledging begins Monday, April 27th.

As a thank you to our "silent" givers, you will be entered into a great raffle where there is a new gift  every day of the FunDrive.

We value your membership and hope that you will count on us for your local connection. Your donations help all of our community-based organizations get their message out and if you think about it - we are all one!

Please take time to fill out our Member Survey on the back of the renewal slip. And don't forget KMUD's 22nd birthday bash -- The Block Party -- is on Saturday, May 30th. It's when we have a party for you.

In Peace, Love and Community
