It's inevitable.  Some people won't want to buy our records when they can get them for free.  In an ideal world, all music would be free and recording artists would be happy to make music for free distribution to the masses.  But this isn't an ideal world.  Recording and releasing records costs money.  And in our case, that money comes straight out of our pockets.  We have to at least recoup that money or we can't continue to record.  It's that simple.

We try to make our records as cheaply as possible in the stores.  We set the dealer price (the price we sell the record to the distributor at) as low as we possibly can so that the price you buy it for in the store doesn't break the bank.  We just need to cover our costs.

So, please, if you download or share our music for free, consider buying something by the band too.  Come to our concerts, buy a CD at the concert.  Without this, we can't continue to make music.

Thank you.

Piano Magic's 10th official album, 'Ovations,' is released on Monday 12th October 2009.

Recorded through May to August this year by Gareth Parton (The Go-Team, The Breeders, Pete & The Pirates), at his petite La Planque studio and The Fortress in London, 'Ovations' is clearly the Anglo-French group's most coherent, confident and dynamic record to date.

Typically for a Piano Magic record, it's a restless beast; a record that swings wildly between Marrakesh, Eastern Europe, Sevilla and early 80's Manchester without breaking sweat.  Piano Magic have always worn their influences on their sleeves and this is no exception.  The Chameleons, Joy Division and The Cure intersect with Turkish darabuka, hammered dulcimer, viola, cello, flamenco claps.  Elsewhere, there are cold analogue synths, chiming guitars, mournful piano and industrial percussion.

Piano Magic's fascination with Eurasian percussion is, in part, much down to one of their biggest influences - the Melbourne-born, though World-wise, 4AD Records-signed group, Dead Can Dance.  And it's no small coup that 'Ovations' features not only DCD's supreme percussionist/dulcimer, Peter Ulrich but also the voice of principal songwriter, Brendan Perry on two tracks ("You Never Loved This City" and "The Nightmare Goes On").  The reclusive Perry, himself, a very recent convert to Piano Magic's music was only too happy to sing with a group that by his own admission, were making "the most beautiful music" he's heard for a long time. ....

'Ovations' showcases Piano Magic at the dizzy heights of their songsmithery - romantic, emotive, dynamic, anthemic.

Piano Magic, formed as far back as 1996.  Since then, they’ve released 12 long players and multiple singles and EPs on a plethora of independent labels.  For the past 6 years, the band has been made up of both English and French members, though their music has the unmistakable air of classic late 70’s/early 80’s coldwave.  In 2001, they coaxed Vashti Bunyan out of a 30 year retirement for their album, 'Writers Without Homes' before further notable collaborations with the likes of Low and Cornershop and 'Son de Mar, 'a beautiful soundtrack for Spanish film director, Bigas Luna.  Regular tours and festival headlines throughout Italy, France, Germany and Spain have paid off with a devout Continental following and magazine cover stories.  For the likes of 4AD, Morr Music, Important Records, Green Ufos and Darla, Piano Magic have made some of the most compelling, poetic, dynamic and romantic records of our time.

MARCH OF THE ATHEISTS

(Johnson/Tcherneyan/Ulrich)

Well I can accept that you have your faith....

So you must accept that I have none....

You chase your god into your grave....

I'll die alone when my days are done....

All these fabulous beasts that you strike down....

All this beautiful land that you claim to command....

And all these wars in the name of a book....

There's god in your heart but there's blood on your hands....

So where are your fires of Hell?....

So where now your golden gates?....

I see no angels, no heaven on high....

I hear no marching of your saints....

(Go placidly amongst the noise and haste)....

Well, I know your churches are a sight to behold....

And I know your stories as good as any man....

I know we all have our crosses to bear....

But I'll waste none of my time in desperate prayer....

I've rung the bells of the Mont-St-Michel....

But me and the saviour were never that close....

I've called into the night with no hope of reply....

But I've seen the holes in the Holy Ghost....

So where now, your peace to all men?....

So where now, your undeniable proof?....

Where is it written, in paper or stone : ....

An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth?....

Programming, percussion, bass  - Jerome Tcherneyan

Hammered Dulcimer- Peter Ulrich

Vocal, claps - Glen Johnson

Guitar - Franck Alba

Violin/viola - Ruth Elder

Cello - Kwesi Edman

Claps - Gareth Parton

The recording of the new Piano Magic album (title TBC) is ticking along nicely.  We're working with Gareth Parton (above) as producer.  Gareth is no stranger to the band, having worked with us on Disaffected, The Troubled Sleep and the Saint Marie EP.  You may also know him for his work with The Go! Team, Foals, Magnetophone, Pete & The Pirates, The Breeders, Cass McCombs, Neil Halstead and plenty more.

We're recording at our old haunt, The Fortress, as well as Gareth's own studio and at home.

The line-up for the record is Glen, Angele, Franck, Jerome, Alasdair and several guest musicians and singers, including one of our greatest inspirations.  More on that later.

All being well, the album will be out in Sept/Oct on Make Mine Music for the World excluding North America and Asia, where you can find it on Darla.  Formats will be CD/vinyl/mp3/FLAC.

Piano Magic will be supporting the release of the album with as many dates as possible towards the last quarter of 2009.  See our Myspace homepage for more details.

Just a thought : If every one of our 15,000 Myspace friends bought our forthcoming album, we'd be finally able to afford to tour America.

Rafaello Russo interviews Glen Johnson for the great Italian webzine, Ondarock (in English) here :

Raffaello interviews Glen

There's also a review of Glen's solo album, 'Details Not Recorded,' (in Italian) here :

Details reviewed

'Details Not Recorded,' my solo album, is out now.  It features 11 new songs :

1. Brilliant Ships
2. My Horror Mask
3. Late Caller
4. Details Not Recorded
5. Les Catacombes
6. I Know You Know My Name
7. A Pause In The Night
8. Save Me
9. Desiderata
10. Loves Like You
11. Quiet Life

The record was recorded mostly at home, though adopted some semblance of cohesion under Simon Trought's skillful hand at SOUP studio, an
analogue heaven beneath the Duke Of Uke ukelele shop in Spitalfields,
London.

http://www.soupstudio.co.uk/

I'm accompanied on 'Details' by a small band of like-minded souls.  David
Sheppard (of Leaf Records recording artists, Phelan/Sheppard) offered
many hours of priceless support, advice and instrumentation; playing
drums, bass and guitar.  Keiron Phelan (also of Phelan/Sheppard)
provided flute and Josh Hillman, sometime of Willard Grant Conspiracy,
played viola and violin.   Angele David-Guillou of Klima supplied her categoristic glacial backing vocals and Jerome Tcherneyan of Piano Magic supplemented percussion.  Myself, I can lay claim to vocal, MIDI guitar, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, programming, keyboards, percussion, melodica, recorder, whistling and bells.

If you'd like to buy the album, I'd recommend these people :

The UK-based mail order company, Norman Records mail order, for the
extremely reasonable price of £7.79 (+ post and packaging) :

Norman Records

Note : if you buy 'Details Not Recorded' along with Portal's new 'Options'
EP (featuring Glen on vocals), or any other Make Mine Music release,
Norman will give you a Make Mine Music compilation ('MMM050')
ABSOLUTELY FREE.

The album can also be picked up from the honourable Boomkat gentlefolk  :

Boomkat

Boomkat also offer the album in mp3 and FLAC formats.

If you're in America, you can also buy it from those reliable surf dudes at Darla :

surf's up

I've received several emails informing me that the album is also already
available as a free download on various blogs and websites.
Downloading from these sites and copying the record for your friends
quite simply moves me one step closer to announcing my retirement from
making records.  If people don't purchase my record, I don't make a
penny and therefore, I can't afford to make more records.  It's as
simple as that.  Given that I put 6 months of my time, effort, blood,
sweat and tears, not to mention my own money, into 'Details,' (and not
forgetting the dedication and supreme efforts of a wonderful supporting
cast) please support me by buying this record from one of the suppliers
listed above.  It's a lavish package - a luxurious, 12 page lyric
booklet designed by Gerald Tournier.  Julia Haw painted a wonderful
original oil painting, 'The Headless Surgeon,' for the cover image.
Jeff Teader, who put the whole design together - painstakingly scanned
each individual letter of the alphabet from a Victorian physiology book
to create the tracklisting on the back of the artwork.
Despite these otherworldy efforts, I have done my utmost to keep the dealer
price of this release as low as possible.  You should not have to pay
more than £10/€10.67/$14 (minus post and packaging) for the album
ANYWHERE.

I sincerely thank you for the support and I hope you enjoy the record.
