Today, I looked into Flickr. Flickr is a website brought to us by the people at Yahoo.com, which allows for people to upload, archive, and share images with friends, family, and/or even complete strangers. After signing up for it, I found it to be a little overwhelming. There are so many features that this site offers that it could take quite some time to really get a good grasp on navigating around the site.
Once you register w/ Flickr, the first step is to set up your profile. Just like your profile in myspace, you can upload an image that will visually represent your account. You fill out some information about yourself, and within minutes of doing this same ol' profile routine, you are ready to start uploading your photos. There are several ways that you can go about uploading images to your account. You can do this directly from the site, or you can download a program that they offer for a free download that will allow you to upload multiple images at one time. Being that I'm a Mac user, I chose to download the plugin that works with iPhoto. This makes the naming of all of your pictures very simple. You can categorize them, make any necessary adjustments to the photos, and even "tag" the images before you begin to upload. Tagging was kind of unclear to me at first, but I figured out that a tag is basically a "keyword" that you can give an image so that you can quickly retrieve your images from the Flickr website. Once you're ready, you can begin to export, or upload, your images.
When you get back to the Flickr website, you should see an "album" with your recently uploaded images located within it. There are some pretty neat things you can do from here. You have the ability to configure privacy settings for each of your images so that only friends, only family, both friends and family, or anyone can view your pictures. This is a nice feature, being that you may not want the world to be able to view your "drunken shenanigans" with your pals, etc. You can also "draw" little boxes around specific regions of your pictures and assign a "note" to accompany it. This is useful for pointing out a particular portion of your pictures and giving an explanation to it.
If you have an account set up, and know other people who have their own accounts, you can "add" them as a friend or family member so that they may have easy access to view your images. Now you can inform people that you have updated your Flickr account, and they will be able to visit your Flickr site and view your images easily.
Flickr, along w/ giving you the space to upload your images, and all that other neat-o stuff, also offers the ability to print images. There are a couple of ways that you can receive your prints. Once you have filled your shopping cart with the images that you want to print and purchase, you can select to have them printed and picked up from your local Target! That's pretty freaking convenient. They have them ready for you in approximately one hour! There is also the option to have them mailed directly to you if you would prefer. Their prices are very reasonable compared to similar photo printing operations (Wal Mart and CVS Pharmacy). Being that my mother lives in Montana, this is pretty convenient because I can upload some of my pictures, and tell my mother to visit my account. From there, she has the ability to print the images that she would like, and pick them up, all at her leisure!
There are so many options w/ this site, and being that it's still in Beta testing, I'm sure there are more goodies on the way! These sites nowadays are offering so much, and mostly for free! It's pretty nice having so many options available as well as having the ability to network w/ such a broad range of people. If you are still hungry for more options from Flickr, there are some things that you can pay for, for example having the ability to upload more images per month. The free account does have one main drawback...you are limited by the amount of images that you can upload per month. The free account restricts you to under 250 megs worth of uploading per month, while the paid upgrade will allow you to upload 2 gigs worth of images per month.
Give Flickr a shot! When you get your account set up, don't forget to add me, so that we can share our images!
