I am very excited to announce that on Tuesday, December 29th, The Courage and I will be playing The Triple Door in Seattle!
Last August, I had the pleasure of opening for The Senate at The Triple Door, from which we release our live EP. This time we are headlining and our good friend Karli Fairbanks is opening for us. It will be a grand production with brand new songs and guest performers at Seattle's classiest venue.

Doors open at 5:30, but the show doesn't start until 7:30. I recommend coming early and enjoying the exceptional food offered on The Triple Door's menu.

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door or at www.thetripledoor.net. I recommend buying your tickets in advance as this show will likely sell out.

See you there!

By the time Noah Gundersen took the Q Cafe stage after 10 p.m. Friday night, the one-room coffee shop was so full that people were standing outside near the windows, hoping to hear the sold-out show. The crowd indoors could hardly wait for Gundersen and his band to start performing: they clapped along as the band warmed up, yelling for more. When the set finally started, and Gundersen played the opening guitar line to "Caroline" on the newly-released Saints and Liars EP, his fans roared and immediately began clapping in time to the song's rollicking beat.

Given Gundersen's immense talent--his voice is pitch perfect and warm but still able to wail with angst--there were a few moments where it seemed like his backing band, known as the Courage, overpowered him. He had as many as five other musicians on stage with him at the Q Cafe, and--during the early songs of his set--the instrumentation felt heavy-handed. It seemed liked Gundersen's guitar and his sister Abby's violin and backing vocals would have been enough to translate the power of this songs.

But when the band started playing the lilting, subdued "The Ocean," the musicians started working with the songs rather than against them. The performance finally clicked: Gundersen also performed a brand new song, and there was this awe-inspiring moment when both violinists played double stops and Noah pounded his guitar. It felt like the first Bright Eyes tour after the release of Lifted or The Story Is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground: this is how a young, gifted singer-songwriter makes a band work.

And from that point on, it became clear why Gundersen plays with the Courage, rather than going solo: the full band brings people to their feet and gives his music an alt-country tinge. And people connect to that sound in a totally different way than they do to Gundersen's folkier, quieter songs. (Think about Ryan Adams: Like Gundersen, he writes beautiful, heartbreaking lyrics, but it's the backing instrumentation on "To Be Young (Is to Be Sad, Is to Be High)" that gets people dancing.)

Toward the end of Gundersen's set, someone from the crowd called out, "From this point out, there will be no one sitting down," referring to rows of thearte-like chairs at the Q Cafe. Everyone rose to their feet as Gundersen played Moss on a Rolling Stone, singing along to the chorus. By the time the band started "Oh Momma," fans were on the stage, dancing behind Gundersen as he played. And this is the power of Gundersen's fans: they truly understand the 20-year-old musician performing in front of them, and they are uninhibited in their support. That's just as powerful as any song Gundersen would write.

Hello everyone,

I'm very excited to finally announce the official release date of my new E.P. "Saints & Liars"!

October 9th the Courage and I will be having our CD release show at The Q Cafe in Seattle. This six song EP was recorded by Karli Fairbanks and Nick Drummond. Mixing was done by producer Daniel Mendez (Dashboard Confessional, Duran Duran, Heart). It includes a lot of the new songs we've been playing the last several months.
This show will also be the last show of a two month tour that the band and I are currently on. It will also be the last show we play before we move to Seattle and begin to solidify the band and all it's dynamics.
So, needless to say we are very excited for this show and hope you can make it!

The Q Cafe is located at:

3223 15th Ave W
Seattle WA 98119

The show will begin at 8PM, doors open at 7:30PM. Jordan Lake, Briar Rose, and Seth Woodward of Paper Mache will be opening the show. Tickets are $10 at the door.

Hope to see you at the show!

Hey. Ivan here. You may not be familiar with me up until this point, but I just started playing drums in The Courage and it has been a blast so far. This is my first time being on an actual tour which seems both a difficult adjustment as well as a liberation from my bland and grueling college life. I recently graduated from the architecture program at the UW in Seattle where I longed for the opportunity to play music again. Now that I have been released into the world of music I feel like I am where I am finally able to do what I was made for in the first place.

So far, we’ve had good and bad shows. Our show last night at Zeppie’s Bar in Butte is an example of a somewhat sour show experience. We played our hearts out, yet the very large venue was very empty. I’m beginning to realize how crucial a positive mentality is on tour. Even though we may have bad shows, we move on the next day where there are several other good shows awaiting us. I’m also realizing that rural America is, for the most part, a harder crowd to reel in.

I feel very blessed and privileged to be taken in by Noah and Abby’s band. This is by far the best band I have ever played with. With every passing day, I’ve noticed the band drawing closer together musically and personally. However, for me, connecting on a personal level has been a bit difficult. I am a man of few words. But, despite my social struggles, I connect on a completely higher level when Travis and I are driving the band with our rhythms. At every show we seem to be reaching for that sacred spiritual experience while at the same time sharing it with our audience even more than we have in the past. I am eager to see what unfolds in this band during the remainder of our journey.
